In reality he is either doing it for himself or for some other, actually powerful patron. Also, in one of interviews Miyazaki mentioned that feudal lords often came into conflict with mining settlements not out of pure greed, but on behalf of their peasants - mining operations heavily pollute the rivers that peasants downstream use for irrigation. So, while ironmaking was essential, every daimyo wanted it to happen somewhere else, and not upstream of his lands
Wow! That's really great insight Konstantin! About the emperors during that period and the pollutants that came from iron making. It's so easy to come to the conclusion that everything is about greed and power. Things are not black and white but complex sometimes.
