Thanks for the shout-out gentlemen! I greatly appreciate it! All the schools you mentioned have value in one way or another. But the first move that should be done if it hasn't been done already is to contact your Media partners and find out if they have any ideas on which schools would bring value to the Mountain West. And then go from there. There is a possibility that this could actually mean that they would need to grab 6 schools because Air Force is looking into being a football only member of the AAC. It's going to be an interesting season.
The key question facing the MW is can they keep Air Force & UNLV or not? That determines how many backfill replacements they need. I would start with NM ST. The arch rival of NM ST is actually UTEP, so they are a good pair. Sac St should be the selection with them. Then I would look at options like the Montana schools.
Simple Who do you want to be? Do you want to be C-USA? Then Add markets, geography be damned: UTEP, Sac State, Texas State, North Texas, Tarelton State UC Davis. Want to be the Sun Belt Conf? Add programs (mostly FCS) with built-in rivalries, passionate fanbases, and geography on your side: Idaho, Montana, Montana State, North Dakota State, South Dakota State. Personally I lean SBC build.
In this day and age, you need to be who the media partners want you to be. The built in rivalries you list rely on the hopes that these schools want to move to FBS. It’s unlikely they all do right now. But point well stated!
Montana, South Dakota, and North Dakota have about 3 million people collectively. Sacramento has 2.3 million Metro. That is all you need to know about the viability of your "SBC" option. They'll stay where they are. It would be a financial disaster for them to move up.
@@denisdooley1540 if they were to go at it alone then yes, but if the were do it together Along with Idaho it could make it possible. Not easy but possible
I really think North Dakota State and South Dakota State would be viable adds. No they don't have big TV markets, but they do have very competitive football programs!
Another target that the Mountain West should look at, the Uni. of Idaho (Vandals) of Moscow Id. Member of the Big Sky Conference, went up to FBS and joined the WAC then the Sun Belt Conference, then dropped back down to FCS. If you are looking at Montana and Montana St. then need to look at the Uni. of Idaho.
I would agree but it’s probably hard to convince a school to move up to FBS again after they just dropped back after failing in the FBS. MW needs 8 to be an FBS conference & that’s where they’re at now but there’s a chance they lose more to the PAC so I say go big & add Sac State, NMSU, & the Montana schools, that gets u back to 12 & then if they lose 2 more they can look at teams with question marks like Idaho, the Dakotas & west Texas schools
@@anthonytitone Yeah, its tough to go up then the alumni going crazy about going back down to the FCS level. The only thing that could be holding them back right now is the finances. If they do go back up to the FBS level, it might be a bit cheaper traveling to the MW schools compared flying down to the Southeast for the Sun Belt schools.
Sac St is a very interesting candidate considering before the Troy Taylor era, the football program was historically bad with just 3 postseason appearances in any division over a 65+ year timeline. The athletic department is also very interesting in that as you called out, sponsors alot of sports and they currently have the largest athletic budget (and close to largest football budget) in the big sky. However, their recent fundraising efforts to upgrade their basketball facilities (currently with one of the smallest gyms in all D1) ended up with the school only able to raise enough funds to repurpose their student union center. Serious changes would need to be undertaken by the school and the donors in order to make a successful jump to FBS. Despite the state of California's football prowress in football many programs have died in the pursuit to move to the bigger tiers.
Actually they also have a deal with the Kings to use Golden One Center an nba arena. They also just passed yesterday a new student fee to fund athletic facilities. There is also 75-100 million sitting to start the football stadium rebuild. They have more than what they need to move up to FBS. The past is the past this isn’t the now at that school. Lots going on In The background since the New President started last year. The well events center repurpose is temporary will seat 3500 and is much better than the old gym. If they have to use Golden One Center for Basketball they will.
@@torranceyork2486 They've played one game at Golden 1 center, with nothing scheduled for 2024. But that's besides the point, the support and fundraising has been a huge barrier to the school making a further jump in their athletics. Yes, the "SAC-12" is the new group that is trying to bridge the gap with lots of promises etc (including PAC12 memership as its ultimate goal) but all this is wishful thinking and has yet to be seen in practice.

Think the best solution for the mountain west to be patient, as I believe the exit/poaching fees is why Pac2 has halted for more MtnWest at this point. I fully expect Pac 2 to come take UNLV, Nevada, Tulane, &B UT-San Antonio, best way forward for survivability of the Mtn West maybe a merger with AAC or ConferenceUSA, as their Western Division, forming a Nationwide G5 Conference
MWC tv deal right now is significantly more money than the SBC. That might change after the MW lost the 4 teams but it’s definitely not an insane thing
TARGET TEAMS IN THE BIG SKY, AND WAC. SACRAMENTO STATE, EASTERN WASHINGTON, NORTHERN COLORADO, NORTHERN ARIZONA, UTAH TECH, NEW MEXICO STATE, UTEP, UTRGV.
Off the wall suggestion offer membership with all big sky schools. Maybe some won't want to move to FBS but doing that will create a large conference with tons of rivalries that provides stability and is a tempting package for broadcasters.
🤔 Chosing To Add Winning Teams Will Bring in More Bowl Money and Exposure and Sponsorship For The Conference! Not Only Will The Montana Schools Be Able To Deliver That, Travel Logistics Will Be Easier on The Existing Mountain West Schools! 🥳
I hear what you guys are saying about NAU, but as someone who grew up in the area I feel as though NAU has way more support from their city and surrounding towns than most FCS programs. NAU is the only show in town in all of northern Arizona (apart from an indoor football team). People in AZ love the school and its sports teams. On-campus student population is not a good statistic to measure team engagement.
I know this is a football podcast, but could we get another show discussing the possibility of the mountain west using their money to pull Gonzaga, Saint Mary’s, San Francisco, and Grand Canyon into the league? It’s highly likely that configuration could earn more from NCAA tournament and basketball media revenue than any football MWC conference could without them.
Northern Arizona used to be conference mates with Arizona, Arizona State, New Mexico, New Mexico State, UTEP, Texas Tech, West Texas A&M and Hardin Simmons in the old Border Conference. So, they are not new playing at the top level before. You need to add California schools and the three FCS California schools could help offset the Hawaii's travel situation. It could get Hawaii in as full then as well. You need 8 for FBS, but 7 for other sports, if they lose Air Force and UNLV to the PAC 12? MWC would not be in compliance with the NCAA. You have not touched on some candidates. Lamar's football was brought back from the dead with former Sooners' coaches of Switzer and Tubbs. ACU Both schools spent money to upgrade their facilities. UTRGV in south Texas Long Beach State yeah, they don't have football, but they have been talking about restating football to join the MWC. Utah Tech outside of Vegas could be a logical target in the future if you lose UNLV. UTA's students voted to for the school to restart their football program. There is a school in D2 right now that could be FBS in the future. Central Oklahoma They are in Edmond in the OKC's media market. They already raised money recently to upgrade the football stadium and baseball field.
From what I read, it's like the situation with Arizona and Arizona State going to the Big XII. The lawmakers in Arizona were going to be "bullish" on Arizona leaving if Arizona State did not get an invite as well and the Big XII invited Arizona State. I see the same thing happening with UNLV and Nevada.
🏀 Now Let's Talk Montana Basketball For a Moment! Famous Coaches That Started in Montana Include Jud Heathcoate (Who Coached Majic Johnson at Michigan State), Phil Jackson (Who Coached Both Majic and Michael Jordan in the NBA), Mike Montgomery (Who Coached Stanford To 2 National Championships), Stew Morrell (Utah State Coaching Legend and Gonzaga Coach), Danny Sprinkle (Just Went From MT State To Utah State and Won The Mt West, Before Moving on To Washington), Larry Kryszewski (Former NBA Player and Utah Head Coach), John Stockton (NBA Legend and Mt. State Assistant Coach), Wayne Tinkle (Oregon State Head Coach), Kelvin Sampson (Houston Cougers Head Coach), ETC...
Why not just add both NMSU and UTEP? They’re natural rivals and they both have strong basketball history. I know UTEP basketball has been weak lately, but that’s because they’ve been isolated from their regional rivals. Glory road was at UTEP!
UTEP and NM St. would be possible targets for current FBS programs and then look at some Texas schools probably. I expect MW to lose 2 add'l schools, UNLV and AF.
Personally I’d like to add Montana, Montana State, North Dakota State and South Dakota State. Smaller schools, but excellent programs. Quality > Quantity.
Big West school graduate here. California schools with no football teams except UC Davis and Cal Poly SLO. I'm pulling for the Mountain West. I hope it can stay together. The MW has more options than the PAC12 in regards to back filling schools.
If you had to add the Dakotas you will have to get North Dakota, South Dakota, North Dakota State, and South Dakota State to have easier travel for the Dakota schools
The more I think about it the more I see the Rio Grande corridor as important to strengthening the conference. Bringing in both NMSU and UTEP will kick UNM in the ass and force them to up their game. UTEP also has a large TV Market, NMSU would be equivalent to a Utah St marketwise. Then Sacramento St to keep our California market robust and to pair with SJSU. Also if the PAC dips into the AAC, I think Rice would be a perfect fit in the MWC, big endowment much like Wyoming and New Mexico, excellent market and they could be UTEP's pair. If we can't get Rice, Tulsa would be another solid option. So that's 4 that would get the MWC back to 12. I would prefer they be bold and go to 16 in Football again taking more schools in the TX footprint. Then add St. Mary's and Gonzaga in basketball only getting us to 18 Basketball Schools. If those schools don't pan out for hoops look at adding Grand Canyon in Phoenix and search for the best possible basketball school available, maybe a Wichita St. The MWC needs to be aggressive to fend off the PAC. The PAC is nothing more then the MWC West, it's a lateral situation for those schools.
Texas programs you mentioned should be considered, but I'd add there's no reason not to go hard after UTSA and North Texas. I'd also speak with Tulane as a close proximity travel partner.
Texas & California schools should be a priority. Central time zone should also be a priority. 1) California: Sacramento St. 2) Texas: Texas St. + someone else 3) Mountain Time Zone: New Mexico St. 4) Central: North Dakota St., South Dakota St. Montana schools would be very cool but need to get markets and central time zone first. Is there anything in Southern California that would be a possibility?
University of San Diego plays in the FCS Pioneer conference with teams that don’t seem to have any regional area. There market is obviously big and they’re 2-0 so far.
If the MWC takes teams from Texas. They will certainly go after not only Tarleton St. But Utep, UTSA (if the Pac-12 doesn't take them first), Rice, and N. Texas. Out of these 4 schools all of them (except N. Texas) have been a member or the MWC/WAC once before. It only makes since to bring them back.
Sac State & New Mexico St should be at the top of the list. Secondary candidates should be Cal Davis & UTEP. N. Dakota St. has a rabid fan base, but not sure how much value their presence would have in a media deal.
🕵♂️ There are Several More Things To Keep in Mind: 1) The Pac and Mountain West Are Looking At Some of the Same FBS Schools 2.) Other Conferences, Like The AAC May Be Looking To Poach Some of The Mountain West Schools - Like Air Force 3.) To Survive, It Would Be Beneficial To Add Enough Schools That Your Existence Isn't Threatened 4.) Staying Regional Reduces Travel Costs and Improves Logistics For The Student Athletes 5.) Adding Winning Programs Will Bring in Additional Bowl Revenue and Improve The Product on The Field! You Play To Win The Game, Not Just Make Money From TV Revenue! Winning Cures Everything! 🏆💵
Sac St students passed a referendum to build an arena and rec center. The rec center was built and is known as The Well. But, the president at the time, said a building next to the football stadium had to be demolished and a new fieldhouse had to be built before the arena could be built! This makes no sense since the arrival was going to be built on another part of the stadium! The reality is they needed this field house so that they can host some track and field events like the USA Trials. So the arena has never been built. Last year, the current president said he will build a new place for the basketball teams to play inside The Well- the rec center! But the volleyball team plays at the old gym. The basketball teams’ schedules have been released and games are at the old gym. A google search shows no stories about the progress of the new “arena” The Sac St fans say they can play at the Kings arena! Yeah, at what costs? I don’t know if the Kings arena before their current arena is still an active arena! It could be standing, but getting ready for demolition. May or may not be another option.
UTEP, NMSU, Sac State, Montana, Montana State would be my preference. I love Weber (Wee-burr) but yeah they are too close. Takes only about an hour to drive down to WSU. They should at least try for Texas State, UTSA, Rice etc. but I doubt any are coming along. Sam Houston State and one that I don't think you mentioned is Stephen F. Austin, those two have rivalry actually, the battle of the piney woods.
My picks for Mountain West expansions are: New Mexico State, UTEP, Montana, Montana State & Idaho. Mixture of FBS & FCS schools. Additionally if Air Force & UNLV (I think they will) leave you can add North Dakota State & South Dakota State. So worst case scenario you have: San Jose State Nevada Utah State Idaho Montana Montana State Wyoming New Mexico UTEP New Mexico State North Dakota State South Dakota State Hawaii Is the conference as strong as it once was? No, but it has the foundations to still compete against other Power 6 conferences. The American is going to take a hit too. Trust me on that. Teams like Tulane, Memphis, & maybe even Rice and South Florida could join the best of the rest PAC conference. I think this version of the MW is right in the middle of the Power 6 behind the PAC & American. Honorable Mention School: Sacramento State
I would look for all FCS teams who want to move up to FBS in the west, but also growth potential in the Midwest as far as Missouri. Location doesn’t matter anymore.
🤔 The "Beauty" of Adding The Montana Schools is That They Come As a "Package Deal" and Cannot Be Seperated or Do Anything Without Legislative Approval! Not Only Do You Get a Quality Rivalery and Quality Programs, But They Aren't Going To Leave Town (i.e. You) in The Middle of The Night! 🤗
Sacramento State is the 4th largest in "their system". "Their system" would include the entire "Cal State" system which does NOT include California-Berkeley, UCLA, or even nearby UC-Davis. So, "their system" includes San Jose St., San Diego St., Fresno St., Humboldt St., and 18 others including all of the Cal Polys. The "system" started as a "teachers college" and in theory is one university, California State University, with 23 campuses. So, Sacramento State has the 4th largest attendance of the 23 campuses.
Thank you for this correction. Hard to keep track of the “systems” in all the states. 4th is outstanding if that system has San Diego St. , Fresno, San Jose St.
As a San Jose St fan, and Wyoming Alumnus, hard no on Weber, Tarlton and Northern Arizona. Don’t care much for Sac St, but it takes away from what Fresno tries to claim is their market. New Mexico St and UTEP are terrible at pretty much everything, but they are easy wins for San Jose and Wyoming every season.
Take the best teams the Pac 12 passes on lets says they pass on UTSA and instead they grab Texas State or they pass on North Texas or Rice, try for them, we know they will not go for UTEP or Tulsa, these are all teams in metro areas so good TV markets, use some of the cash from the Pac 12 expansion to go after AAC teams or Sun Belt. At the very least the MWC can pick up teams like New Mexico State, Louisiana Tech and some FCS teams that want to jump up, the best of these is Sacramento State because again its all about TV market.
The MWC definitely should look at Texas State. I don't think it will be joining the Pac-12 and would make a lot of sense for the MWC if it wants to go that far out of the west and should be open to making a move as far as financial considerations. Agree that UTEP should definitely be considered.
Stephenville, just a little bit outside Dallas? It doesn’t even touch the DFW combined statistical area, their county barely borders the far western reaches of the CSA, which is even bigger of a stretch than the MSA!
Problem that I see is regarding media deal or media value for the MW. The star of the show has left, Boise State. TV bosses are probably asking where is the value in the MW now? Do other possible candidates you mentioned also see this? I'm not sure if any of the FBS schools you mentioned would even want to take a chance. I think there are dark clouds ahead for the MW unless they can turn it around somehow. Not to mention UNLV and Air Force are probably gone soon as well. I like your show and I know you are trying to keep it positive, and sorry to sound like a buzz kill here but I'm really worried this turns into what we saw with the WAC years ago. I'm for the Montana schools joining I think they bring "brand" and Sac brings the market.
Of the 42 Nielsen tracked nationally televised games (CBSSN does not report viewership figures) that featured Mountain West teams in 2023, 23 featured the four teams that left for the Pac. Air Force and UNLV had a further 6 - and both have a spot in the AAC if they dont manage a spot in the Pac. The six teams likely to stay in the Mountain West only had 13 major broadcast games. Teams people want to watch get games, unpopular teams do get on the air with popular teams, but as a rule the fewer major broadcast games you have, the less people want to watch your team. So it looks like the MW has roughly 30-40% of its media base intact at this point, its very unclear what media deal they would garner - I would guess between CUSA and Fun Belt numbers, $1.2 million/school. Likely much less than even Fun Belt teams make. Adding FCS teams and FBS programs like UTEP and NMSU adds nothing to your total value - each mouth needs fed. Wyoming, San Jose, and Utah State by themselves have the lions share of the remaining value and would likely be better off joining the AAC with Air Force, which is still a possibility. My bet is Air Force, Wyoming, and Utah State join the AAC, the latter two as travel partners for Air Force and back fill for the teams poached by the Pac tomorrow.
Tarleton had a ton of money, and they will spend it! They recently broke crown on a new basketball arena. And they are actively looking to get into a FCS conference. How big should the MWC go? Back 12 football teams and 11 full members? Or go to 14? 12 football teams and 11 full members? Or 12 football, 11 full members and 1 non football member? Replace SDSU! MWC will be at 6 schools when UNLV and Air Force leave. So, NMSU and UTEP need to be added to get back to 8. Then do you add Tarleton and ACU to get into Texas? ACU is in West Texas. Or the Montanas? Unless they give Hawaii full membership, add a non football schools with a good basketball program! How about Cal Baptist? MWC gets into LA market. Ok Cal Baptist is about 60 miles from LA. CBU has great facilities, and money to spend.!
@@ReisterJP how many teams from Texas can we have in a PACIFIC COAST CONFERENCE? I do like UTEP too, New Mexico is growing people are getting tired of living on top of each other and ducking bullets when you stop to get gas and a few other random thoughts, that's why?

Lots of what he said about Sac State is incorrect. They have made 4 straight FCS playoffs they won the Big Sky Championship 3 years in a row. The Head Coach Troy Taylor went to Stanford to be the new Head Coach last year. They have a tv population of 4 million in the 6 county area so that why it’s a huge Tv market. They have the Kings and the A’s will be playing there until 2028, until the Las Vegas stadium is done which isn’t for sure. They have 31,000 students. They have plans for a new football stadium and also just raised student fees to fund athletics facilities. The basketball ball team will be moved to a temporary on campus events center that will have seating for 3500 moving out of the old gym they had which was pitiful. They have also signed a deal with the Kings to use Golden State Center a NBA Arena. There is a lot of interest here in Sacramento for more sports. People here don’t like the big sky it’s a watered down FCS league and Sac State would get lots of attention if they went FBS with regional rivalry with San Jose State, Nevada and being in FBS you could potentially get home and home games with P-12 schools like Fresno State , San Diego State , Maybe UNLV and both Cal and Stanford. Sacramento State has already played all these schools in Football and Basketball. They already have the required 21 sports required for FBS. They are a great top target. UC Davis would also be a good add cause they sit in one of the counties that are apart of the Sacramento TV Market and are a rival to Sacramento State.
Nah those are academically excellent schools who really don't care that much about money or football. They will never move their Olympic sports from the big west. And they will never care enough about football to move up from FCS.
That may not be as attractive as it sounds! San Diego St. and Fresno State were offered and turned it down. Fresno is already competing in the Big-12 in equestrian but has no interest otherwise. UNLV is the next addition to the PAC-12 I believe. If done correctly, the PAC-12 can be a powerhouse in all sports with the addition of certain target schools.
👨🏫 The List of Potential Pac-12 Schools Not in The Mountain West I Saw (Vegas Odds): 1.) Gonzaga (Basketball Only) 2.) Memphis 3.) Tulane 4.) UTSA 5.) Montana State 6.) South Dakota State 7.) North Dakota State 8.) Montana
@@TheBigMountainPodcast sac state has a 1500 men’s basketball arena and is remodeling their student union to get to 3000 now. The article you mention explicitly says they aren’t affiliated with the university and the cal. State system is a 23 campus single entity that works under its own logic
Be warned, the facilites at sac state for all sports, especially football and basketball, are horrendous, including stadiums and arenas. They are not financially nor facilities ready for an FBS jump. They likely will be stuck in neutral in the FBS for a long time, much like kennesaw state and Sam Houston state who were added to conference USA.
I mean, they kinda did. And if the AAC schools don’t see a media deal worth leaving they’ll most likely have a complete merger. Maaaybe without UNLV and Air Force who down seem all that interested in the PAC as a first choice.
The MW needs to just go FCS. There is nothing left in the FBS for any of those losers. The fact that you are even talking about adding FCS schools is just desperation. The conference is dead.
To me, Sacramento State and Tarleton State would be awesome. Sacramento is the 2nd biggest tv market in California. Tarleton State is right outside the Dallas/Fort Worth area, which is the top tv market in Texas. Both, as you pointed out, are growing programs that are investing a lot of $ into their athletics. I would look, in this order: Sacramento State, UTEP (gets you into Texas), NM State, and Tarleton State. HAVE to get great tv markets with this expansion. I dont think North Texas or Texas St come to the MWC and UTSA will probably be Pac12. Like Ive pointed out before; the Montana schools and Dakota schools bring nothing to the table except regionality. Wont have any monetary gain to the conference. With that in mind, I wouldn’t target either unless you absolutely have to if the other options fall through, to keep the conference afloat. Just my 2 cents though.

Yes, the "SAC-12" is the new group that is trying to bridge the gap with lots of promises etc (including PAC12 memership as its ultimate goal) but all this is wishful thinking and has yet to be seen in practice.

UTEP, NM State, Texas State, UTSA and Sac. State should join the Mountain West.
Texas State is a member of the Sunbelt Conference. No reason for that school to move to MWC.
Why not just have the remaining MW teams join tbe FCS instead? Clearly, they not competitive in the FBS without Boise and Fresno anymore.
Sac State and UC Davis would be my pick.
Both strong schools
Off the wall suggestion offer membership with all big sky schools. Maybe some won't want to move to FBS but doing that will create a large conference with tons of rivalries that provides stability and is a tempting package for broadcasters.
Interesting thought.
We would think they will look FBS first, and FCS second.
ACU
Both schools spent money to upgrade their facilities.
UTRGV in south Texas
Long Beach State yeah, they don't have football, but they have been talking about restating football to join the MWC.
UNLV and Nevada have been in different conferences over the years. They are NOT tied at the hip.
Correct
True that there is precedent. But we have no idea, or at least I have no idea how that may have changed in recent times.
They should go back to Texas Western brand
Would be great adds and likely only 2 of a few FBS they could realistically add.
Went to a SAC state game last year. Cool environment. Would be crazy with a stadium upgrade
Incarnet Word would get you into San Antonio
UTEP and NM St. would be possible targets for current FBS programs and then look at some Texas schools probably. I expect MW to lose 2 add'l schools, UNLV and AF.
Personally I’d like to add Montana, Montana State, North Dakota State and South Dakota State. Smaller schools, but excellent programs. Quality > Quantity.
Big West school graduate here. California schools with no football teams except UC Davis and Cal Poly SLO. I'm pulling for the Mountain West. I hope it can stay together. The MW has more options than the PAC12 in regards to back filling schools.
NMSU 10k attendance, UTEP 41k in first home game. UTEP just went to the conference title game in CUSA also. The Don Haskins is legendary.
Seeing some rumors the MWC has UTEP ahead of NMST.
I’d easily take the both.
As we have seen stated before, UNM could be the sleeping giant. We hope Bronco can make this team a contender in short order.
Texas programs you mentioned should be considered, but I'd add there's no reason not to go hard after UTSA and North Texas. I'd also speak with Tulane as a close proximity travel partner.
SamHouston just moved up to FBS-G5 last year I think we are Happy in CUSA. Maybe UTSA would be a possibility I think
We fully agree that Cali and TX should be top priorities. Nothing else comes close.
Adding Sac St, NMST, & UTEP would be great.
A google search shows no stories about the progress of the new “arena”
The Sac St fans say they can play at the Kings arena!
Looks like UTEP may be at the top of the MWC list.
We’d take all 5 of these in a heart beat.
My picks for Mountain West expansions are: New Mexico State, UTEP, Montana, Montana State & Idaho.
Mixture of FBS & FCS schools.
Additionally if Air Force & UNLV (I think they will) leave you can add North Dakota State & South Dakota State.
So worst case scenario you have:
San Jose State Nevada
Utah State Idaho
Montana Montana State
Wyoming New Mexico
UTEP New Mexico State
North Dakota State South Dakota State
Hawaii
Is the conference as strong as it once was?
Good point.
I wonder if UNLV would rather be a top dog in the MWC rather than a part of the the litter in PAC 12
Money talks for UNLV, as they are in the best position because everyone wants them.
Abilene Christian would be an AWESOME addition
Take the best teams the Pac 12 passes on lets says they pass on UTSA and instead they grab Texas State or they pass on North Texas or Rice, try for them, we know they will not go for UTEP or Tulsa, these are all teams in metro areas so good TV markets, use some of the cash from the Pac 12 expansion to go after AAC teams or Sun Belt. At the very least the MWC can pick up teams like New Mexico State, Louisiana Tech and some FCS teams that want to jump up, the best of these is Sacramento State because again its all about TV market.
What about U of San Diego? I think the MW would benefit from keeping a team in SoCal
Tulsa, UTEP, Rice, NM State
North Dakota State, Northern Iowa, Montana.
As great as it would be if Idaho, both Montana schools, NDST, and SDST - these schools may not want to jump to FBS.
Agreed.
Sac St is the play in the FCS arena right now.
The MWC definitely should look at Texas State. I don't think it will be joining the Pac-12 and would make a lot of sense for the MWC if it wants to go that far out of the west and should be open to making a move as far as financial considerations. Agree that UTEP should definitely be considered.
Tx St would be great.
Just not sure they are attainable with the loses the MWC has incurred.
Stephenville, just a little bit outside Dallas? It doesn’t even touch the DFW combined statistical area, their county barely borders the far western reaches of the CSA, which is even bigger of a stretch than the MSA!
The MWC would be crazy not to take at least NDSU they are the top of the FCS especially brand wise and competition wise.
Look at either PVAMU or Abilene Christian over Tarleton
Great comments.
Thx for the view and interaction!
New Mexico St should definitely be a target school along with Texas St, the Montana's and N. Arizona.
NM state? Not UTEP? What market does NM state have?
@@ReisterJP how many teams from Texas can we have in a PACIFIC COAST CONFERENCE? I do like UTEP too, New Mexico is growing people are getting tired of living on top of each other and ducking bullets when you stop to get gas and a few other random thoughts, that's why?
Media market wise Sacramento is good for any conference. Football talent wise they fit better in mountain west than PAC 12.
Idaho and Eastern Washington from FCS. They’d get you instant money from the rivalry from WSU
Don’t forget Oakland A’s two to three years move to Las Vegas

Media market... what about UIW from the FCS. They are in San Antonio Texas
UIW. Fine school but has a 6,000 seat stadium that they rarely sell out. FCS is the perfect fit for them.
they should merge with Conference USA 16 or 17 teams Idaho to replace Boise.
I think you stated that hornet stadium is biggest in big sky. Isn’t grizzly stadium bigger?
I believe we said “one of the biggest”. Yes, both Montanas have large stadiums as well.
Interesting, as the information provided here came directly from a press release from Friday.
Bring up Davis and Cal Poly.
Nah those are academically excellent schools who really don't care that much about money or football. They will never move their Olympic sports from the big west. And they will never care enough about football to move up from FCS.
SDakotaSU, NDakotaSU, the Montana Schools,
UNLV should go to the big 12
That may not be as attractive as it sounds! San Diego St. and Fresno State were offered and turned it down. Fresno is already competing in the Big-12 in equestrian but has no interest otherwise. UNLV is the next addition to the PAC-12 I believe. If done correctly, the PAC-12 can be a powerhouse in all sports with the addition of certain target schools.
@@bobgonzalez5845 And what are your target schools?
👨🏫 The List of Potential Pac-12 Schools Not in The Mountain West I Saw (Vegas Odds): 1.) Gonzaga (Basketball Only) 2.) Memphis 3.) Tulane 4.) UTSA 5.) Montana State 6.) South Dakota State 7.) North Dakota State 8.) Montana
At this point, Nothing would point to any FCS school getting a PAC invite.
@@TheBigMountainPodcast WHY IS VEGAS LISTING THEM THEN? 🤷♂️
Who knows 🤷♂️
@TheBigMountainPodcast It's Because They Are "Potential Candidates"! 😎
Sacramento State good market but do they try to put good football teams on the field every year if not then who cares how big their media market is
UTEP is clearly top choice for MW, especially with New Mexico State. UC Davis > sac state in the eyes of Californians
As a media market UTEP is the biggest school up for grabs
While maybe true UC Davis, do they have a committee and politicians backing their move to FBS?
@@TheBigMountainPodcast sac state has a 1500 men’s basketball arena and is remodeling their student union to get to 3000 now. The article you mention explicitly says they aren’t affiliated with the university and the cal. State system is a 23 campus single entity that works under its own logic
Idaho?
Be warned, the facilites at sac state for all sports, especially football and basketball, are horrendous, including stadiums and arenas. They are not financially nor facilities ready for an FBS jump. They likely will be stuck in neutral in the FBS for a long time, much like kennesaw state and Sam Houston state who were added to conference USA.
Understood.
But if state and local politics are behind a move to FBS, things can change very quickly.
@@TheBigMountainPodcastyes ucdavis is a far bigger and richer school. It's basically UCLA but without a sports history

Sorry. Just not in our top 5-6 FCS targets.
We did talk about them on our first discussion on this back in April.
Weren’t you guys predicting a PAC2 / MtnWest merger just a month ago?
I mean, they kinda did. And if the AAC schools don’t see a media deal worth leaving they’ll most likely have a complete merger. Maaaybe without UNLV and Air Force who down seem all that interested in the PAC as a first choice.
@@N1oreo1 ahh. No. PAC isn’t adding the bottom of Mtn West.
Yep.
@@TheBigMountainPodcast you still predicting a full merger? 14 schools.
@@teeduck given what was done last week, it’s looks very unlikely. But we wouldn’t say it is 0%.
If Utep and NM state leave c-usa will likely disband.
Could a MWC & CUSA merger be coming? 🤔
The MW needs to just go FCS. There is nothing left in the FBS for any of those losers. The fact that you are even talking about adding FCS schools is just desperation. The conference is dead.
8 doesn’t the MW have 7 full members and affiliate football only Hawaii
Correct. But they could look to make Hawaii a full member.
The only sport Hawaii is good is volleyball everything else 👎
@@TheBigMountainPodcast it is an idea. but they need to expand especially if AFA leaves for the American to join Army/Navy
@@TheBigMountainPodcast they have that exit fees and penalty fee to help out with travel in other sports.
That’s a very strong 4 adds. 2 current FBS and 2 FCS, but in markets the MWC needs.
Jay, you talk WAY TOO MUCH!
A 50/50 mix would be better
as opposed to 95/5!
If you’d like to hear more from Steve, check out our Big Ten eps. That is his forte while JY’s focus is on the MWC.
It would be a MAJOR downgrade for TX ST to join the MWC in all sports. Where do you even watch the MWC?
