Just because materialism appears rational doesn't mean it is. The problems which are becoming prominent in our world, cannot be solved solely via reason. Yet, reason *is capable* of liberating us from the ontological encapsulation we've been put under. This channel is a prime example of that encapsulation. A set of unexamined dogmatic ideas, which are constantly reinforced and never called into question. An egoistic circle jerk of owning the 'brainwashed religious'. This is the same kind of dogma that the philosophical forefathers of the scientific method sought to undermine in the catholic church. If the very fundament of your Being wants to believe in something transcendent of the phenomenal world of senses, why deny it? To do so, is to condone violence against yourself-- and to engage in the same kind of denial of body as the celibate monk. It's ridiculous. A lot of religious people will take offense to being called stupid, but truth be told, faith doesn't require logical reasoning, only the acceptance of a blind opinion in the absence of evidence.
Wrong. Faith is evidence based. For example: why does a man have faith in his wife? It’s doubtful he just fully put faith in her upon first meeting. Faith was built in that relationship over time. I believe what you’re doing here is confusing faith with belief. You can believe in God’s existence, but have no faith in him.
@@mattchambers4561 your comment can be corroborated in the first of two definitions for faith "confidence or trust in a person or thing". This definition is worthy of consideration. While faith in somethings or someone can be established through direct experience, a second definition which is "belief that is not based on proof", asserts that belief and faith are the same, or in the least are similar. In fact, they are synonyms. The definitions for opinion are respectively, "a belief or judgment that rests on grounds insufficient to produce complete certainty.", and a "personal view, attitude, or appraisal." The word appraisal in the second definition, does also suggest that one has determined a value based in some undefined comparison, but the first definition offers a clearer understanding that opinions (a belief) is concluded on insufficient grounds and shrouded in uncertainty. Given your observation, I will revise my original statement to be more specific by stating that faith in a god doesn't require logical reasoning, only the acceptance of a blind opinion in the absence of evidence.
@@mattchambers4561No the fuck it is not! To take something on faith or to believe by faith is to believe it despite contrary or inadequate evidence. It is to believe anyway when there’s not enough support from evidence and reason to clear the way. The overcoming of doubts or counter-evidence is the essential feature of faith. If someone’s reaction to my arguments against the resurrection and other religious beliefs is that she has faith, then she is conceding the central point. In effect, she is acknowledging that in order to believe those religious doctrines, one must ignore the inefficiencies in the evidence and believe anyway. If there is sufficient evidence to justify the conclusion, then faith isn’t needed. So to suggest that faith and evidence jointly justify is acknowledging that the evidence by itself isn’t enough, and I will ignore that gap and believe anyway. In fact, the need to invoke faith to bridge the gap affirms the inadequacy of the evidence. In effect, the faith response amounts to, ‘I’m going to believe anyway, despite those objections.’ That’s just dogmatic irrationality, not a serious consideration that the critic must give some further objection to.
Yes, but that depends on what you mean by 'needed', 'stupid' and 'people'. All of those are terms that JP can claim he meant in a way that actually doesn't mean what he said.
No he didn't, not in any way. He criticizes the fundamentalists every time he's asked. Yeah, but is religion really for stupid people? Is willful ignorance stupid? Is refusing to use rational, skeptical and critical thinking stupid? Is replacing reality with faith stupid? I find it very difficult to believe that religion is not for stupid people. Reality also shows us that more often than not the higher educated a person is the less likely they are going to be religious and America is a fantastic example of that. A lower IQ population equals a highly religious population, it goes without saying you just have to look around. "Is religion for stupid people?" There seems to be a lot of truth behind such a statement.
Actual stupidity is not a lack of intelligence, it has nothing to do with intelligence. It's acting despite better knowledge. It's an emotional issue. Lower IQ makes it easier to be deceived. Stupidity is, when your deceiver is you.
There does seem to be some truth to that statement. I’m an atheist myself, so I’ve read a considerable amount of literature on modern religiosity and intelligence to be able to come to that conclusion. It’s not even some attempt to bully or belittle religious people in anyway, but to me its genuinely a cause for concern.

It’s intellectually dishonest to assume that anyone who subscribes to religion of any kind is somehow less intelligent than those who do not. Religion and those who follow do so almost exclusively for cultural and familial ties based on their geographical location and family history. If anyone in this thread was born in any nation that has Stan in its last 4 letters you would be Muslim. It has nothing to do with one’s ability to see the world objectively or not. There is a spectrum of intelligence in all people groups, in all walks of life and belief structures. People in synagogues, churches, mosques and temples fall on the same spectrum of IQ as those who do not. It is dishonest and dangerous to blanket all believers of any religion as lesser stupid people. It’s a slippery slope that turns to discrimination segregation and violence. It’s happened since the beginning of time and will continue to do so in places where one is at the mercy of people who do not share your beliefs and who ultimately use force to stop them. God also orders the destruction of 60 cities so that the Israelites can live there. He orders the killing of all the men, women, and children of each city, and the looting of all of value (Deuteronomy 3). He orders another attack and the killing of all the living creatures of the city: men and women, young, and old, as well as oxen sheep, and asses (Joshua 6). In Judges 21 He orders the murder of all the people of Jabesh-gilead, except for the virgin girls who were taken to be forcibly raped and married. When they wanted more virgins, God told them to hide alongside the road and when they saw a girl they liked, kidnap her and forcibly rape her and make her your wife! *Just about every other page in the Old Testament has God killing somebody!* In 2 Kings 10:18-27, God orders the murder of all the worshipers of a different god in their very own church! In total God kills 371,186 people directly and orders another 1,862,265 people murdered The God of the Bible also allows slavery, including selling your own daughter as a sex slave (Exodus 21:1-11), child abuse (Judges 11:29-40 & Isaiah 13:16), and bashing babies against rocks (Hosea 13:16 & Psalms 137:9). ***This type of criminal behavior should shock any moral person.*** ***Murder, rape, pillage, plunder, slavery, and child abuse can not be justified by saying that some god says it’s OK.*** If more people would actually sit down and read the Bible there would be a lot more atheists like myself. *Jesus also promoted the idea that all men should castrate themselves to go to heaven:* For there are eunuchs, that were so born from their mother’s womb: and there are eunuchs, that were made eunuchs by men: and there are eunuchs, that made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven’s sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it (Matthew 19:12). *I don’t know why anyone would follow the teachings of someone who literally tells all men to cut off their privates.* The God of the Bible also was a big fan of ritual human sacrifice and animal sacrifice. *And just in case you are thinking that the evil and immoral laws of the Old Testament are no longer in effect, perhaps you should read where Jesus makes it perfectly clear:* It is easier for Heaven and Earth to pass away than for the smallest part of the letter of the law to become invalid (Luke 16:17).

Jeez! Jordan basically justifies fundamentalist religion by saying it's needed by stupid people.

All humans pursue spirituality on some level through music or art or literature. Those who choose a more traditional path should be allowed to do so without the stigma of being called a lesser human.

The idea that it is simply the opium of the masses and those masses somehow are unable to cope with the thought of their own mortality is just untrue.
Are you saying here that I am stupid for being raised religious and living by moral and ethical values? Am I stupid to let myself be ripped off again and again by dishonest religious people? Am I stupid to put up with being falsely accused over and over and over again? When I was in College a girl spoke to me a few times and sat down next to me a couple of times. Yeah? What about the below message?
*This website is designed to spread the vicious truth about the Bible. For far too long priests and preachers have completely ignored the vicious criminal acts that the Bible promotes. The so called God of the Bible makes Osama Bin Laden look like a Boy Scout. This God, according to the Bible, is directly responsible for many mass-murders, rapes, pillage, plunder, slavery, child abuse and killing, not to mention the killing of unborn children.* I have included references to the Biblical passages, so grab your Bible and follow along.
*It always amazes me how many times this God orders the killing of innocent people even after the Ten Commandments said Thou shall not kill.* For example, God kills 70,000 innocent people because David ordered a census of the people (1 Chronicles 21).
In total God kills 371,186 people directly and orders another 1,862,265 people murdered
The God of the Bible also allows slavery, including selling your own daughter as a sex slave (Exodus 21:1-11), child abuse (Judges 11:29-40 & Isaiah 13:16), and bashing babies against rocks (Hosea 13:16 & Psalms 137:9). ***This type of criminal behavior should shock any moral person.***
***Murder, rape, pillage, plunder, slavery, and child abuse can not be justified by saying that some god says it’s OK.*** If more people would actually sit down and read the Bible there would be a lot more atheists like myself. *I don’t know why anyone would follow the teachings of someone who literally tells all men to cut off their privates.*
The God of the Bible also was a big fan of ritual human sacrifice and animal sacrifice.
There are many more quotes on this topic at my Do Not Ignore the Old Testament web page.

I doubt many of them are religious because of the intelligent design argument. Most religious people became religious because of the indoctrination during their upbringing and the culture that surrounds them keeps them locked in. The ID argument is irrelevant.
@@curbroadshowindoctrination
That's a weak argument
@@divemylollol6152 Did you become religious because of ‘look at the trees’?
@@curbroadshow no I'm just saying whether you believe or not you have to follow 1000 opinions fucking opinions
@@divemylollol6152 No you don’t, you can make up your own mind.
Peterson uses smart sounding words, but expresses the dumbest ideas when you string them together.
perfect title.
Albert Einstein was stupid with that crap too?
Spiritually is not a belief system, it's only to make feel you better lol
Who are the smart people in this video?
Is it not all about having faith?
Oh, there are so many great comments made here in response to this clip. Bravo to many of you. The comments are just as good as the clip.
if you believe everything comes from god, you will never find the willpower to contribute something that’s meaningful to society, nor will you understand the tribulations of those who do
Peterson clearly needs religions to remain active, otherwise he might just run out of business as a shrink

To Boldly Go Where No Man Has Gone Before!
Why do you suppose Jordan Peterson insists on holding on to silly and ridiculous ideas?
That's just sad....Jordan brought a short, blunt stick while Sam brought nukes.
Sam Harris is not stupid.
I repeat, Sam Harris is NOT stupid.
Ok.
Repetition does not make your statement true!
not believing in Pascal's wager on your deathbed is stupid people, come on wake up, don't tell me that anyone who does not believe in Pascal's wager on their deathbed will not have fear of being wrong......C.S. Lewis is the man, not Harris

Hi Pangburn, the thumbnail caption caught my eye because it has always been frustrating for me that the fundamental stupidity of belief is so clear to me but so obscure to those trapped in such delusions. Recently it has become increasingly clear that the main functional reason for such behaviour, however stupid they might be beliefs are quick easy and reliable, good clear rational thought on the other hand is difficult, slow and uncertain.
Cheers, Richard.
What happens when an atheist who hates religion debates an atheist who thinks religion is good? Find out next when Sam Harris debates Jordan Peterson!
not loving the one-sided nature of the clip art's but the bits are spicy
Sam Harris is awesome!
JP needs to define “Do”, “I” and “?” first
Usually I am not for these 60 seconds clip. But with Jordan Peterson on stage, I much prefer this to the next 30 minutes of word salad.
During an interview with Angelika Neuwirth, the distinguished Professor of Qur’anic studies, she argued that the Qur’an has never been successfully challenged by anyone, past or present:
"No one has succeeded, this is right… I really think that the Qur’an has even brought Western researchers embarrassment, who were not able to clarify how suddenly in an environment where there were not any appreciable written text, appeared the Qur’an with its richness of ideas and its magnificent wordings."
.
The Qur’an is chocked full of errors.
Why such obsession with truth? Can we just start lying from tomorrow? Make lying a virtue? Maybe JP can even take a course on it.
Right there Sam was beat, the gent in the centre had an example, not slander of a Baseless ideal...
It's good for smart people to control stupid people.
Yes Jordan, Christianity has been lying for 2000 years and it's still lying. Very impressive no doubt about it.
Eugenia says we'll have a great education someday and he won't like it
This is listenable until Peterson's high pitched girly voice pieces the airwaves. Only a conservative could be so intellectually mediocre yet rake in a fortune for it. If he was on the left he would be washing metaphorical cars.
Jordan's favorite Adjective of Power....
