I remember the old Transbay Center by the bridge. I was shocked -- it was almost as run down as the 16th Street Station in Oakland. The new Salesforce T.C. is beautiful, but it is amazing it was built without a budget to extend Caltrain into SOMA.

Based on concept drawings it looks like this will be a stub-end station. Given that LAUS is currently being upgraded to become a run-through station to improve train flow, I would imagine the same logic should be applied here with a return loop so trains can enter the station from one end and leave the other. Especially when you consider this’ll have half the tracks and platforms of the current Caltrain 4th and King station, keeping a smooth train flow for both Caltrain and CAHSR trains will be crucial to avoid delays.

We have been to China, the UK, Germany, Switzerland and we should be ashamed of ourselves that we don’t have a much better HSR than those countries. We can do it. Name it after a person deserving of it, name it after some local geographical feature or simply name it SF central station but just selling out the name to the highest bidder is bad style, it feels like they need to do it and chances are they actually really do.

@@LucidStew there you go. as someone who, you know, actually lives in the area, before the pandemic the place was PACKED. the rooftop was filled with workers, tourists, and people just having a nice stroll. on the lower decks it's a thousand times better than the old center, with proper lighting and modern features so that you could navigate the many bay area systems, and get to your bus on time. Are there downsides? yeah. we need the bart lines to connect, or amtrak. Something to act as a stopgap connection point until people see common sense and build the high-speed rail we need.
Also seeing as you're not local, i'd be glad to tell you about the bay area's transit problem, because it's a hot mess. long story short, because we never got all our services integrated like, say, nyc, we have about 15 million local services, all of which can be a liiiittle late or early, and even on a day to day schedule that means a lot of lost efficiency and more overhead than we need. However the problem is that when anyone brings up that we should just consolidate already or run Bart/rail through a new area, you get either a) some bunch of rich right wing morons saying that it costs too much (even though the loss in efficiency and quality of life is already costing us more) or b) some nimby trash human who thinks that a train coming to their town means the end of the world and/or their property values. all of them being wrong, but sadly they also tend to have enough money to make the process more expensive than local officials or government agencies want to take on.
However this means that we end up with one of the highest-tech sectors in the world, but to take a trip that you'd need to take 30 minutes by car... ends up being an hour and a half by public transit.

Six tracks is not enough for both Caltrain and HSR to run the timetable they want to run. Not if but when, we'll have to decide which system priority in the station, and frankly Caltrain deserves it more as a commuter service.

Okay where to start… the Current CalTrain station with its current terminal will stay open. The HSR will veer off the line and go into a two way connecting tube to the HSR station. The HSR trains are Dual headed similar to CalTrain and that allows them to reverse directions with minimal time delay and space needed for a complete turnaround. I hope this answers your question

A train station is a place for the train to stop, not necessarily the place to park trains. That would be called a train depot, and to build that underground would be insanely expensive ( And yes, I'm aware that 4th and King is used somewhat like a depot ).
6 tracks, and assuming a rest time of 5 minutes/platform, would be 72 arrivals/departures per hour. With 2 tracks connecting, we can probably get at most 30 trains in and out per hour.
Compare with a typical schedule for our state capitol, Sacramento: 11 trains depart for San Jose, 1 for Reno, 1 towards Redding, none towards Bakersfield although I anecdotally read somewhere that such service exists. *13* trains, for the entire day !
Caltrain, they have *4* trains per hour at *peak* times. If trains come every 30 minutes, per direction, that service is OK. So let's assume 2 HSR trains, 2 trains towards Portland, and 2 eastbound per hour. That's still only 10 trains per hour, and that would already be a level of service that would be unthinkable for many.

San Mateo County doesn't want High Speed Rail and I don't blame them. Do they want grade separations at crossings and electrification of CalTrain? Absolutely! Having grown up in Fremont, I'm all too familiar with the weird high pitched scraping whine of elevated rail cars. Most of the CalTrain line is already higher than the surrounding ground, so the noise will only get worse with HSR. The Baby Bullets do fine. This pipe dream of HSR to SF is only being used to defraud the US Taxpayer to build CalTrains grade separation and to pay for electrification. San Jose is a perfectly fine terminus for HSR.
