@@nooctip Well, sort of. There are UFO conspiracy theories in DC but they are more on the nerv of "are they evil?" instead of "do they exist?"
There’s something I like about each version of Cheetah’s origin. Post Crisis- I liked that her powers were made mystical unlike the previous Cheetahs. I liked the ritual, yes even the virgin part. I feel like her being punished for not being a virgin was intentionally sexist because a lot of rituals are sexist like sacrificing a virgin etc. New 52- I liked her having a closer relationship with Wonder Woman and her growing up in an Amazon worshiping cult. It gives her more of a connection to Wonder Woman and feels more organic as to why she hates her so much. Rebirth- I liked her being friends with Diana and helping her out when she first comes to “man’s world.” I liked how her becoming Cheetah was a tragic thing and Diana feels guilty (even tho it wasn’t we fault) for her transformation and feels responsible to help her.
I like the virgin part too. It was a thing in many horror stories. It is also a something a character genuinely would not have considered before doing the ritual.
Rylan Vanacore exactly! The fact that she was apart of a realistically sexist ritual emphasizes feminist themes because it shows the impossible standards women have to live up to. How can anyone consider a story feminist if you don't show the sexist stuff the hero stands against in the first place?
I feel the post-Crisis Cheetah's origin story (told in Wonder Woman #28-29) is the best one. It doesn't have the "we were friends, but now we're enemies" angle, but makes up for it by being a bloody good story: the expedition, the jungle drums, Barbara having to stab her colleague who trusted her to death and drink his blood, the ritual, her transformation ... That story would make a really great movie.
As with Etta Candy, Marston was fond of surnames which were extremely...on the nose. Another WW villain was named Percy Playboy, and this was apparently his legal name. Weirdly, though, "Rich" is a much more normal-sounding name than "Minerva".
Perhaps a Hot Take, but the Rebirth origin for her is by far my favorite take on the character. They set up all the tragedy by having Diana's Bestie/Etta's Girlfriend being tricked into becoming the Cheetah, but then they go for the extra knife twist of her having to resubmit in order to save the lives of the woman she loves and the man Diana loves. It's heartbreaking.

Several things: 1. In the New 52 Green Lantern also kept his continuinty. 2. I´m TIRED of Cheetah. Sick of her actually. I get that they wanted to flesh out the character in Rebirth because of the movie. But then she kept coming back all the time. One my favorite Wonder Woman villains, and villainess in general, is Giganta. And they don´t use her AT ALL. Since New 52 she appeared on a Wonder Woman story (way later in Rebirth) at it was as allies. I get that having to write a character like that can´t be easy. But FIND A WAY! I mean, Wonder Woman doesn´t have many villains (mostly because writers don´t go back and use the ones she already has or create new ones -with the exception of First Born that was AMAZING. Yet, having Giganta as a very recognizable Wonder Woman enemy ans she´s nowehere to be found. I´m praying to the gods she gets to appear in the third WW movie. 3. I´m glad you talked that way about WW´s "retcon" in Rebirth since they didn´t erase New 52 either. They left it ambiguous. So much so, that later in Rebirth they´ve brought back elements from it and to this day Hera is a member of the Quintessence taking the place of Zeus who was killed and looks like her New 52 version. 4. As for Cheetah´s virgin origin I see nothing wrong with that. It´s still a thing in some cultures. And even in Western countries, while not something to be a shame, to loose your virginity is a bid deal in women and men. ...if anything, and they decided to change it, I would have made it as if she wasn´t pure of soul. 5. On another thought, I think that it will be revealed in the WW84 that the stone that grants Maxwell Lord´s powers comes from Urzkartaga. PS Please do a video on that Superman story. Didn´t know that it was because of legal issues that they handled the character that way in New 52.
Changing it so she "wasn't pure of soul" would have made it even worse. It would just come across as a euphemism and the story would then outright be saying that non-virgin women aren't "pure of soul."

I wanna see a Marvel/DC x-over, where Cheetah and Tigra are off in the background, not fighting, but just hanging out and knocking back mai tais while ranking superheroes' butts...
Why not add Cheetara (probably misspelled that...) from the Thundercats into the mix as well to complete the trifecta?... (Though I guess that wouldn't be fair as, technically, it'd be two cheetahs against a tiger...)...🤔
This was a really good video Sasha! I mean I enjoyed learning about the character, origins, and different versions ... But really sold me is how using a simple Wonder Woman character, you are able to explain all of DC madness of various "crisis" events. I learned a lot. Thanks!
Sasha - you titled this accurately - very confusing. And it's DC fault on the whole, not just with this character. The Post-Crisis/New 52/Rebirth conflicting continuities.... :: groan ::, What were they trying to accomplish? It drove me from collecting their comics. Would love to hear a deep dive on the reasons.
here is a video idea "Wait is that...?" in the DC movies there are side characters with small lines like maybe Catman in the intro to justice league and who was that woman in red when Wonder Woman beat up the robbers? maybe even people like who was the guy working for LEX in the movie? is he in the comic? also I'd love to know more about Veronica Cale and Catman :)
In any timeline, it's not easy, being Cheetah-y. The only thing I liked about the latest incarnation was that it gave Barbara Minerva a more realistic personality that played into her motivation. Also, always wondered if it was Hypolita that saved toddler Donna Troy from the orphanage fire post-Crisis. But that's a different video and/or can of worms. Hypertime, anyone?
I remember reading the Perez run a while back (I was here for the drama). Cheetah was cool, I could've done without her walking stereotype sidekick though.
Very good video. Rucka's Cheetah is great. He knows how to write her relationship with Diana. And keep the Doctor Who reference coming. Hey, maybe you could do a video about The Doctor at comics.
I like the whole scratching out a sometimes other Cheetah bit. Reminds me of a Werewolf or Zombie infection. Can do a post apocalyptic storyline with that.
Cheetah is beginning to remind me of Maureen Ponderosa from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, who used Dennis' alimoney money to fund her surgical "transitioning" into a full-on cat, moreso with every appearance!
Hello! I just want to tell you thank you for this awesome video on cheetah. I wanted to know more about her and this was great. Also super happy that I was able to track down of issue 29 of WW and I wouldn't have known about it if it weren't for you and this vid. Thanks again, love these vids. ^_^
An issue I have with Minerva Cheetah is just that she often kinda hits the Uncanny Valley area for me. She doesn't look like an anthropomorphic cartoon cheetah, but she also doesn't look like a person in a cheetah-style costume. I'm not a huge fan of it personally, but she's one of the few in Wonder Woman's Rogues Mantlepiece (too small to be a gallery), so I'll take what I can get!
I might be in the minority here, but I actually really liked Hippolyta as WWII Wonder Woman. I liked that she hooked up with Wild Cat, and her story arch in the Worlds at War story line made me cry. Do a Polly (that's what Ted called her) video, Sasha! is a cat plant god a catnip plant? My fav, Rebirth, I was totally into BA and Etta :)
This newer Cheetah (the cat god version) reminds me of the DC/!mpact comics hero The Jaguar (sorta the Archie line of superheroes, but revamped in the 90s for DC, the later rebooted a couple more times).
I liked it better when Cheetah was from the island of the themascara that was basically a disgrace warrior Who was poised to take on a metal of wonder woman but was found out to be cheating in the Warriors game and Wonder woman’s mother banished her From the islands
This is a good presentation of the Cheetah character from the Wonder Woman comics. For one you split to three videos to present the details in the different ages or eras. It also helps people have some details of the character for people who are not familiar with the details of the character. I know who is Wonder Woman but I do not all the details of her stories since I tend to be more of a Batman reader so I know more details of Batman his villains supporting characters etc. Hope you do more of these videos to introduce the characters for those who may not know all the details.
Really like the videos you post. A lot of fun information I knew and more I didn't know. Since you did a video on Tigra, might I ask if you have considered the Marvel hero TIGRA for a video ?
Marvel and DC have retconned their universes and characters so many times it's almost impossible to keep up without comprehensive spreadsheets! It's honestly one of the big reasons I stopped collecting comics in the mid-90's. Regardless, I am looking forward to seeing Cheetah in the new Wonder Woman movie (although I likely won't be seeing it in the theaters, considering COVID).
Old cartoon in Playboy: An Aztec preist says to his King, "The March of the Virgins will have to be cancelled/ One is sick and the other one refuses to march alone."
I don't have a problem with the virgin sacrifice angle. It's a common trope for a reason. Although the friendship angle is much better. Plus that was a really good comic. Read it when it was coming out new.
Great video. I only wish you could've worked in a reference to "Now please, may I see your girdle?" -- possibly the greatest line from George Perez's run on WW from the late 80s. (See "Blood of the Cheetah", WW #9, 1987)
I am a super huge, ginormous, fan of cheetah, I consider her my favorite character of all characters and I am attempting to collect every single cheetah comic from silver and bronze age to present day. But I will say you have done an excellent breakdown kudos to you. I am very reserved to see the new WW movie as they corrupted the entire backstory of cheetah but I love a good break down
I like both the John Ostrander´s New 52 origin (its just one issue, the forever evil´s villain month special) and Greg Rucka´s Rebirth origin, despite of them beign so different. Mixed feelings!
Hm. I would say Barbara is my favorite Cheetah overall, HOWEVER! Priscilla is my favorite in terms of personality. It's just so fun to watch someone be deliciously evil and bitchy. That kind of campy villain doesn't get enough love these days. Whatshername with the environmental stuff is okay. Not a bad character or anything but she doesn't live up to Priscilla or Barbara. If she were to ever be brought back into continuity I think I'd prefer her get a different alias/costume.
If they brought back the one with the environmental stuff, she could team up with Catwoman & then those two, & the one with the plant god thing could form a quartet with Poison Ivy...😈😁
Barbara Ann Minerva from the Perez WW is THE Cheetah. Such a great story, love the African Shaman story line and the blood thirsty Cheetah. So excited to see it on the big screen 🐯
I'm still a bit confused about that whole situation when it came to certain characters on the DC roster... Why were so many of them blocked from being on that cartoon?!?...🤔
@@brettpugh7898 That was supposedly because they were afraid the Human Torch would inspire children to immolate themselves (which I think actually happened in an issue of FF!)...I didn't hear about Catwoman, but since they already had at least one Batman villain, I doubt that was the *only* reason for Cheetah...Although, looking at the rest of her RG, can you imagine Dr. Psycho on Superfriends?? LOL
0:29 The thumbnail for the trailer for 'Wonder Woman '84', shows Cheatah but the trailer itself looks more like it shows a character you mention in your next 'Cheatah' vid.
Barbara Minerva's the best Cheetah. Even the Injustice version of her hates Diana. But in the Injustice games it's an evil vs evil thing because Regime Diana is a villain who's partly responsible for Regime Superman turning out the way he did since she encouraged him to be more ruthless and controlling and tried to use Lois's death to make him fall in love with her.

PS
Please do a video on that Superman story. Didn´t know that it was because of legal issues that they handled the character that way in New 52.
How you feel about Giganta is how I feel about Dr. Cyber, one of WW's deadliest villains who hardly ever gets used and is a personal favorite.
Changing it so she "wasn't pure of soul" would have made it even worse. It would just come across as a euphemism and the story would then outright be saying that non-virgin women aren't "pure of soul."
@@Tsukiakari-qb3tk What I'm saying is that even if you did that, it would just come across as a euphemism.
@@Tsukiakari-qb3tk *euphemism:* n. A mild or indirect word or expression substituted for one considered to be too harsh or blunt when referring to something unpleasant or embarrassing
In JLA/Avengers final issue you can see the two fithing in the backround.
This was a really good video Sasha! I mean I enjoyed learning about the character, origins, and different versions ... But really sold me is how using a simple Wonder Woman character, you are able to explain all of DC madness of various "crisis" events. I learned a lot. Thanks!
Casually Comics Extended Universe confirmed with Supergirl horse love
Sasha - you titled this accurately - very confusing. And it's DC fault on the whole, not just with this character. The Post-Crisis/New 52/Rebirth conflicting continuities.... :: groan ::, What were they trying to accomplish? It drove me from collecting their comics. Would love to hear a deep dive on the reasons.
I'll make it simple for you. If George Pérez said Cheetah was not a virgin, then Cheetah was NOT a virgin.
here is a video idea "Wait is that...?" in the DC movies there are side characters with small lines like maybe Catman in the intro to justice league and who was that woman in red when Wonder Woman beat up the robbers? maybe even people like who was the guy working for LEX in the movie? is he in the comic? also I'd love to know more about Veronica Cale and Catman :)
I've loved these Cheetah discussions. Please do more characters that have been changed a lot.
I remember reading the Perez run a while back (I was here for the drama). Cheetah was cool, I could've done without her walking stereotype sidekick though.
9:20 "whom if you meet him in a kitchen late at night, WILL make you eggs"
I love this channel so much
Don’t forget that The Cheetah and Snapper Carr had a thing right before The New 52.
Very good video. Rucka's Cheetah is great. He knows how to write her relationship with Diana. And keep the Doctor Who reference coming. Hey, maybe you could do a video about The Doctor at comics.
The Post-Crisis aka Pre-52 version of Wonder Woman is my favorite version. A woman made from sand and lesbian power, plus Hermes.
ISTR a story involving Clayface, playing on their mutual earth-based origins, somehow...
I’m surprised by the virgin thing, and the lack of the word dame.
I just found your videos like 2 days ago and have been binge watching them. I love your channel and your frequent uploading!❤️👏
Love your videos.. Excellent work and research.. And yes i'm Pre-Crisis, cut me open and count the multiverses... :)
Eye shades on point in this video.
I like the whole scratching out a sometimes other Cheetah bit. Reminds me of a Werewolf or Zombie infection. Can do a post apocalyptic storyline with that.
This was the Cheetah that just confused me as I grew up with the the older versions. Thanks for the explanation!
Casually comics more like casually great
I grew up with the plant god origin and I'm sticking to that and how Cheetah encountered the Bana-Mighdall Amazons.
I've only watched two of your videos, but I'm very impressed with what I see! Glad to consider myself a subscriber now :)

"Perfectly balanced, as all things should be."
love Rebirth Barbara Ann Minerva, Greg Ruka's Wonder Woman was so good
Great video. BTW, you mentioned a possible future video on New 52 Superman swap with the post crisis superman. That would be one I would love to see.
I liked it better when Cheetah was from the island of the themascara that was basically a disgrace warrior Who was poised to take on a metal of wonder woman but was found out to be cheating in the Warriors game and Wonder woman’s mother banished her From the islands
I am here for the "Dodgy British Accent"
Her rebirth origin is my favorite, but I just plain out love Wonder Woman rebirth
Not too hard to follow???? Yikes! I am glad you are the one teaching this class, Sasha.
Wow. Never really read any Wonder Woman comics. Came here to learn. You did a great job. Keep up the good work. Stay blessed [+]
Old cartoon in Playboy: An Aztec preist says to his King,
"The March of the Virgins will have to be cancelled/ One is sick and the other one refuses to march alone."
My favorite version is from the Superfriends. She was basically Catwoman Lite because they couldn't use Catwoman due to licensing issues 🤣😂🤣
I'm still a bit confused about that whole situation when it came to certain characters on the DC roster...
Why were so many of them blocked from being on that cartoon?!?...🤔
@@DjDragonblade your guess is as good as mine, same with marvel, I mean the Fantastic Four had a robot in it lol 🤣😂🤣
LOL
@@HandofOmega i believe it's because Filmation had the rights to Catwoman, Joker, and Pinguin at the time 😇💜💙💜
Brett Pugh yeah I find this original legion of doom quite interesting
"Not too hard to follow I think."
SSSSOOOOOO GLAD THAT YOU'RE COVERING MY FAV VILLAN
0:29 The thumbnail for the trailer for 'Wonder Woman '84', shows Cheatah but the trailer itself looks more like it shows a character you mention in your next 'Cheatah' vid.
Barbara Minerva's the best Cheetah. Even the Injustice version of her hates Diana. But in the Injustice games it's an evil vs evil thing because Regime Diana is a villain who's partly responsible for Regime Superman turning out the way he did since she encouraged him to be more ruthless and controlling and tried to use Lois's death to make him fall in love with her.
This was all incredibly interesting to learn about! :)
Can you do a history on icon?
Wait.. From the Midlands?! As someone from the Midlands, this is RARE and provoked me to make an odd squee!
This is the first time I’ve read the story your talking about before the video.
Thank you for the Catman late night culinary reference!
The main takeaway from all the DC videos is; dammit Flash
Someone get Sasha a cheetah onesie for these great stories! She already has the red hair!
I love you :) I love these Female Introspectives, I say lean into them. well passed. I watch them all the way through. WONDERFUL JOB! Hey Sasha if you want to do a colab for PEACE ONE DAY. I am down. I give you a box of toys you can give to your fans in return for drawings or small stories of heroism ? I want to heal America.
I kept getting tripped up whenever you said her full name, it sounded like you were talking about 2 different people -> Barbara Ann Minerva but I kept hearing Barbara *AND* Minerva XD
I cant ignore L in the background.
I am usually not a fan of the friend turned enemy troupe so I like the post crisis origin better than the Nu52 one.
Any chance you could do a review on Kaine Parker the Scarlet Spider. Personally i feels he's a character worth talking about
