  • This is a tool-assisted speedrun of Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga (Mario & Luigi RPG in Japan) from 2012. I used the game-breaking skips which I found recently.
    I included a visualisation of the brothers' stats, their action commands, enemy HP, coins, items etc.
    I felt that it would improve the viewing experience but I'm not really sure. Please tell me what you think about it. It was made by pirohiko.

      Unpopular opinion: The GBA & DS version of Superstar Saga & Bowser’s Inside Story are better than their 3DS remakes that just tried to fix everything that was 2D 2000s fun about these games and turned into over-saturated Dream Team versions and also shells of their former selves. Defend Superstar Saga + Bowser’s Minions if you will, but remember, there is a possibility that because Nintendo would do whatever the heck they want like remake BIS just because “the original is the highest-grossing game of the franchise” while ending up the lowest-grossing, AlphaDream was about to shut down!

    When Luigi approaches mini Mario, mini Mario is supposed to walk behind Luigi and then Luigi turns Mario back to normal. But if mini Mario is already exactly behind Luigi, then mini Mario is not turned back to normal and this is where the glitch happens.
    When Mario (behind Luigi) had "Hand" selected beforehand, then you can go on and prepare the glitch to make Luigi into a barrel to clip through walls. But I forget the specifics of that because it's been a while. I wrote a guide on SDA forums.

    For anyone wondering how he did this, I can try to give insight on what's happening.
    (This is all theory; not 100% sure if this is true or even close to true, just my understanding of what's happening. Feel free to correct me.)
    At around 45:45, he does something to the barrel which causes it to simultaneously be broken AND still keep the commands for it. (This is probably caused by frame-perfect destruction of the barrel while doing something else to trick the game into thinking Luigi is still in the barrel.) This causes really strange things to happen, as Luigi is really not supposed to be able to break out of a non-existent barrel, nor is Mario supposed to be able to jump on a non-existent barrel. (This is most likely what allows the use of all the funky movement glitches seen thereafter. Right around 48:50, when the screen starts glitching out, we see that the ID of Mario's action command jumps up to 6 (which really shouldn't be happening (And is most likely possible due to having the fire action command)), and then a few seconds later rapidly jumps to 31. After that, he gets into a fight and loses on purpose. (Now, at this point Mario's action command ID is still 31, and the game still thinks Luigi is in a barrel.) So with all this done, he 'barrel glitches' his way to Teehee Valley, at which point Mario uses a cactus to skyrocket his action command ID even higher (putting Luigi's at 255 immediately), and this causes two things to happen. For one, this lags out the game, and secondly (this may be related to the lag the game experiences), it (not sure about this) allows him access to parts of Teehee Valley he shouldn't be able to reach. Then, when he's where he wants to be, he sets Mario's action command ID back to 31, and Luigi's back to 0. I believe the reason he goes out of his way to fight Popple and Birdo is due to the fact that it acts as some form of event trigger that tells Beanbean Castle to let him into the final area. With all this done, he goes to the final area and barrel glitches into the exit to skip all of the challenges in the castle, and goes straight to the final boss.
    I'd be interested to see how close I was from the uploader; this is just what I assume happened.

      45:45 I indeed destroy the barrel while jumping on it, thus keeping it. But this kind of the glitch is weak because I lose the barrel as soon as I break out of it once. I go to Oho Oasis to learn the firehand. Performing the "action command glitch", I can get the strong version of the glitch as I can get the barrel and break out of it as many times as I want as long as Mario holds on to his "hop on barrel" command (which is 0x1F or "31"), and I can pretty much get any action command ID for the two brothers that I want them to have.
      Now, I want to finish the game as fast as possible and to do this, I need to beat Popple & birdo in Teehee Valley. However, there is a horizontal wall in Teehee Valley and I can only barrel clip horizontally, not vertically. I have to rely on another glitch to bypass that wall: Teleporting. Mario has to get a certain hammer command (pressing R after using it would increment the command ID more and more instead of it reseting back to zero). I use this hammer to pound Luigi into the ground and then press R until I can highjump on Luigi (facing northwards would freeze the game btw). Doing that will glitch up some properties related to the brothers' walking and positioning, so walking around can make them teleport across the screen (with this kind of glitch, it seems to only work when visiting a new room whereas if you use the firedash glitch (a completely different glitch GBA Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga --- 1st Star Bean Piece Sequence-Break ), you could teleport anywhere. This is just side info). So I can teleport past the wall and finish the game.
      Please look up altabiscuit's videos and twitch.tv stream, he is a dedicated console speedrunner of Mario & Luigi and has some tutorials.

    To be as precise as possible: The input for this 'emulator movie' (.VBM = Visual boy advance movie file) was recorded over the course of about one month (spending some hours every day). When the input sequence was complete, I recorded the AVI in one go.
    The AVI was then used for encoding (making the file size smaller and adding the visualisations).

    Very interesting! I like seeing prove of the fact that event like the appearing of bowsers castle by coming from a certain location, and how you can get earlier to that certain locations by using the barrel glitch. I always imagined how a TAS of this game would be done, cause I thought that you could just skip all the normal enemies, but that would also mean you're in a lower level so the bosses are harder to defeat. Thanks for doing this:)

    Nice TAS, the hud was really keen and the gameplay was super-rad. Showed this to a friend who'd never seen these glitches before and they didn't know what was going on and that's the appeal of a TAS isn't it.

    Loved this game. I found it very interesting that they used enemies from the original Mario Bros. game. Brand new characters and enemies, with some really old school Mario enemies was genius. Great and entertaining video! You already said probably not, but Partners in Time and or Bowser's Inside story TAS would be cool too.

    Wow... after the 45 minute mark, all hell breaks loose. This was very entertaining, except for the long combo at the end.
    Also, the HUD was great, with the item display and hit point display being my favorite parts.

    The game activates and disactivates the "timer" depending what ingame events you enter. The surfing minigame in the ocean disactivates it, and the jumping minigame with Luigi in Guffawha ruins activates it, for example.
    I have done a speedrun using these glitches, although it has a lot of room for improvement. Hopefully that answers your questions

    This is a TAS so I was using rewinds (saving "states" of the game's inner working and RAM etc. on certain frames, loading those states when I make mistakes or optimize something - every TAS is just a sequence of button input after all).
    I just had to stop glitching every now and then to see where I was. Pausing the game turns the glitched graphics to normal.

    so having the barrel allows you to do everything / anything?
    can you please explain whats happening when you do the barrel clip and why the game starts messing up like mad when you do some actions? (when your action counter hits 255 or what ever its suppose to mean)

    The display was made by pirohiko. I asked him to make it for me. It is a thing called "aviUTL" that can read lua scripts (i.e. scripts that you can give to the emulator to read memory address values, for example) and output or perform stuff (like, the item display). It's hard for me to explain because I didn't make it.

    In some boss battles I had to use different attacks because of RNG (the randomness in the game that determines enemy patterns) and maybe because, as you said, it was faster anyway, I don't remember. It's been a while since I made this.

    Initially we included maxHP and maxBP but it seemed like redundant information so we removed it.
    I gave a few explanations in the tasvideos forum thread and in my other videos but there is no detailed explanation yet. I will do it at some point

    I don't know what happens. The reason why I collected fire Hand is so I can do the glitch (to a larger scale than I did back in the forest, a few minutes earlier).

    The barrel thing looks suspiciously like RBA in OoT, though I can't tell if it's used for hacking memory or just for mobility. Congrats for discovering it, I'm really impressed. Is the display automated or was it manually added in? Also, is there an explanation anywhere for the barrel glitch?
