I am beginning to scratch build in HO scale. However, since I've accumulated enough Lionel 027 engines and rolling stock, I will start scratch building in O scale. I appreciate you taking the time to explain the techniques you use. I recently got a scale ruler for HO, S & O scales and am waiting on my mini tabletop saw to arrive so I can begin cutting wood for my buildings. I have some balsa or bass wood that I got years ago & I think it was a variety pack. I've started sawing (by hand) all the popsicle sticks' tops (the curved section) so I will be able to use it as well. The next trip to the grocery store my wife will get me a couple of packs of wooden coffee stirrers to use as well.
After much swearing and cussing I finally completed a Tichy Train Group flatcar as I saw a video of another modeler assembling this kit and I really liked the brake detail (which no one will ever see, 'cause it's underneath the deck). I followed the directions to the tee and wished I hadn't. After installing the stirrups in a previous step, while installing the extra added bronze phosphor wire grab irons, I broke every one of the stirrups off. If you ever build this kit, install the stirrups as the very LAST step. I did make some stirrups out of staples from a desktop stapler that were the right size for HO scale. I think I spent as much time chasing small parts across the floor as I did building the model, LOL! After assembly I painted the under frame rail brown with my airbrush and I hand painted each board on the deck a different shade of brown, mixing the acrylic paint in a little plastic communion cup as I went along. It turned out very realistic and believable. Cheers from eastern TN

Im a 61 year modeling veteran and I'm amazed what I can still learn from others. Great video tutorial. Thanks for sharing.

I helped my dad build his house back in 1967-1969, so I understand all about top plates, sills, headers, etc. Guess this will come in handy as I begin to scratch build. I like the allowance on the jig for the ridge pole while constructing the rafters and rafter braces. Are you going to angle cut the rafter tails so the fascia will fit? I remember notching all the rafters to sit on the top plate. Soffit & fascia, I remember well as well as the vents that went into the soffit. Cheers - TN

Jon, glad you enjoy the videos. Today's cameras and software would make them much easier to do. But I had a lot of fun making them.

Where can someone like myself get a blueprint to make my own razorblade-cutter? Just wondering because ive always wanted to make my own cutter so I could cut up small sized pieces of wood and attempt to make a miniature version of our home for display in our living room,it definitely looks homemade because it looks to be attached to a piece of plexiglass, sorry so long but watching your videos makes me want to gather my supplies and build something everytime :) lol take care, stay safe & keep these videos comin' :)

Beautiful work, How long did this building actually take you to build?

A building like this takes no more than 12 hours. Filming this video took about 6 months.

It's too bad you can't get teeny-weeny little nails! That's meant with affection and admiration.

May I have a link to where you buy your wood online?
