Thanks, Jeff! I'm going to work with my dad soon on making a more "mechanical" video about the infrastructure and all that. He is very good at explaining how it was built and the operating systems. Great video. Enjoyed the way you explained everything. I noticed you had coriander in one of the trays. For coriander seeds to germinate do you need to put any weight on top of biostrate medium? or just wait out 7 to 10 days for seeds to germinate?
QUESTION: We have a high school horticulture program and your videos have been very helpful. My students harvested our first crop and we are curious as to when you decide to harvest? Do you grow them beyond the first leaf stage?
I was able to find the Biostrate growing medium from your supplier, Crop King. Thanks for all your tips and teaching. Very informative. I am so glad i found your channel.
Hello! This is an extremely helpful and informative video; thank you! I was wondering if you have had any issues with seeds being carried into the nutrient tank during germination from the nutrient solution flowing down the channels? I noticed in the first tray, the BioStrate covered the outlet hole at the end of the channel, but it was not covering the outlet in the second tray.
The biostrate should just be in channel...don't know what you saw but we don't use it to filter the water before going back into re-circulation. We put a 1.5 GPH emitter on the feed tube to prevent seeds from washing down to the tank...its just enough water to keep everything growing...and not to much water flow to wash the seeds away. hope that helps
Gabriele Riva Yes we grow all of our lettuce and herbs in these channels with the same nutrients. We also have a bucket system for tomatoes, cucumbers and pole beans.

Hey, I was wondering how you created your hydroponics setup, and if there was some form of instructions or a place to look to find out how to make a smaller/different version. Love the setup you have.
Great videos and info! Can you let me know what type of emitters you use? I see some on the beans, but not on the micros or spinach, but might not be able to see them from the videos.
The emitters are just tubing that is stuck into the channels. The microgreens use the same tubing, but with a reducer attached so the stream doesn't wash all of the seeds away. www.cropking.com/catalog/bato-system-components-tubing-irrigation-nft-system-components-system-components/feed-tube

Do you guys reuse the biostrate? Also what is your slope on the channels? I've noticed quite a bit of algae with nft microgreens and we're trying to figure out ways to keep it to a minimum.
We don't reuse biostrat I suppose you could if you could clean it somehow. We keep the microgreens covered until the sprout which keeps the algae down big time. The greenhouse has a 4% slope to the back The channels slope 8%
Both the pieces are NFT channels thin film. We purchased the from CropKing in Lodi Ohio. Let them know we sent you and they will take great care of you.
How often do you have the water run through the channels? Do you ever get root rot? I was under the impression you aren't supposed to keep rockwool consistently wet.
That is an interesting idea. It depends on how long they take to grow. We like to turn over the channels often so we don't have to worry about root issues setting in.

Yep the same. They get the same nutrients as the lettuce, and it's running 24/7. We do reduce the flow out of the emitters or else the seeds get washed away.
@@HomegrownPassion Great thanks!!!. I was wondering the same thing. But I also suspect that feeding isn’t necessary because a sprouting seed contains all the energy required to get the plant to it’s first true leaf set, the proper harvesting time for microgreens so why feed? A seed is the essence of life. It can lie dormant for years and then sprout a fast growing tree in the middle of a concrete heat jungle the moment a crack appears and a bit of moisture gets in. And many of these microgreen crops are brassicas, otherwise known as lettuce or, when they pop up in the middle of the sidewalk, weeds. Tough plants with a powerful life force and will to grow. I’m not a big fan of hydroponics, or any growing method that isn’t self sustaining and in harmony with the natural world. We need to focus on preserving our own habitat or we won’t have one much longer. That said I was looking for ways to reduce disposable materials and costs, cut down the labor intensive process as much as possible and supply a living product.. And here I’ve found exactly what I needed! In the single use growing medium that can stay intact to sale, at least until my Moringa and bamboo are established and big enough to harvest for materials. And the single long tray set up will make harvest a breeze; simply cut the growing medium to the predetermined sale container length..where I’ve also left an unseeded cut line so little dies in the cutting, then rinse and package still living!
Thank you for the informative video. I was looking at the BioStrate from Cropking that you mentioned and it doesn't look as "fluffy or stringy" as what you used. Have they changed the product?
shkupjani Hello, we use a very diluted bleach solution to clean because it is effective again germs and mold. It is a tiny amount. Then we let the trays dry completely and sit for awhile before replanting so the chlorine in the bleach can dissipate. For our nutrients, they are mined minerals just like how your table salt comes from mines. We also don’t use any sprays or pesticides. Thank you for your good question.
After seeing this and many of your other videos, I got some growing trays from Crop King. Can you let me know how much water you use when growing microgreens? When I setup my system it seems there is way too much water flowing. I’ve cut the flow way down and am also wondering if you let it run 24x7 or is it set on a schedule. Do you have one flow rate for germination and another for the growing phase? Thanks for all your videos!!! 😎
Of course and that's great! I'm going to plant some microgreens this week and film it. I'll show the end of the emitter we use. We have the regular tube emitters hooked up to the microgreen channels along with a reducer. The nutrient solution drips out rather than a stream or else all of the seeds would wash away to the return pipe. Sounds like you have it figured out and yes we let the nutrients run 24/7 and same flow the whole time. 😀 -Devon
Hello Im from New Zealand what nutriant soulution NPK ratio do you use in your Hydroponic system or what is ideal ratio for Microgreens..Great set up by the way .. Mad respect from New Zealand
Just discovered your channel today ( 3/5/21). I am a hobby farmer with an 18x32 greenhouse and a 10x20, which produce very well hydroponically. ready to start my microgreens as well and will ditch the soil method this year and give hydro a shot. Great video:)
Awesome thank you! That's a nice sized greenhouse. We love growing the microgreens, and it's really nice not having to worry about washing dirt off of them. I hope it does well for you!
Hi, awesome video. Little question on the NFT, is there a specific reason you opted for NFT ? I always had the impression it would be way more prone to root diseases and rot compared to ebb and flow especially for microgreens, would love some input before heading down the wrong road :)
City boy here with a dream to be a farmer. :). Don’t make fun of me. 😂. My question. I have built a 450 hole hydroponic system in my big window loft. Grew lettuce. I understand how those chemicals work. I’m a nerd so I created a self ph system and had a water purifier that auto filled the system. It was a flood system. Seems to be too Re reliable than the misting spray systems as they break. How does your system water micro greens? Seems like it would wash the seeds away? Do you wait? Do you push a button? Is it manual? Do you have separate nutetsnts mix? Like more water none of the other stuff? Basically how fo you flood it with out washing the seeds.

😀 -Devon
Nice video. Is the biostrate reuseable?
Thank you and no it is not. It does decompose nicely in the compost pile.
Where do the growing mat rolls come from? I can't find anything that is less than 9"
They are from CropKing. Here's the link.

Well done, ideal such a nice family operation!
Thank you! We have fun working together 💚
What nutrients are you pumping into these channels?
Based on water source a fertilizer program was developed using standard water-soluble natural minerals.
Where do you get the biostrate?
CropKing. They have it cut to fit the channels and you can also buy full sheets.
I use a spice jar to spread my seed :)
That sounds like it would work great.
Very nice your protection.
Thank you 🙏😊
Hello what is that grow medium you use?
BioStrat from CropKing
Hi where are you city? And where buy pvc thanks .good idea for hydroponic (Aquaponics too?)
We are in Ohio and we get out pvc channels from CropKing. Here is the link.

Hi, awesome video.
Little question on the NFT, is there a specific reason you opted for NFT ? I always had the impression it would be way more prone to root diseases and rot compared to ebb and flow especially for microgreens, would love some input before heading down the wrong road :)
Love the vibes!
Thanks!!
Are the biostrate mats bio-degradable?
Yes, they are we compost them!
Good I really like your video awesome mother and daughter i love the
City boy here with a dream to be a farmer. Basically how fo you flood it with out washing the seeds.
really easy we put a 1.5 GPH emitter on the feed tube and know down the pressure and water volume to drip the micro greens. Works great!!!
Hi myself rijin joy I,m from India
I want to start this framing @ my Home but I don't no what are basic requirements for start this faming
Due to covid 19 I lost my job, so I think this good business idea to start up so please help me.

Yes I would like to do a video on the framing and system soon. Microgreens and hydroponics would be a good thing to get into and can be scaled down to any size. Thank you for your interest, and please check back for new videos.
Hi Devon!
Just some questions about the grow medium in the channels;
What is it made of?
And also, is it reusable?
Or once the channel has finished it's cycle, you have to dump the medium?
Great content & thank you.
Hi and thank you! It's call BioStrate, and it's made of all natural materials. It can only be used once, but it's made to be composted after use, which is what we do. We've been using it for a few years, and never had issues with it in our compost pile. Here's the link to where we get it www.cropking.com/catalog/biostrate
New friend from Pakistan. Happy gardening *💖🌹👍*
Hello! Glad to have a gardening friend!
Is it replanted after harvest
Hello and the microgreens we cut get packaged and sold to be consumed. Then we clean the channels and replant with new seeds.
@@HomegrownPassion Are they using the same nutrients as the lettuce/bok choy? Would the EC be too high for microgreens?
Thank you💜
Hello from Minneapolis! I’m very interested in buying the 4” rolls of bio substrate felt you rolled out into the growing trough. Having a hard time finding them could you please get me their contact info? Great video thx so much
Hello! Sure we bought those from CropKing. Let them know we sent you and they will take great care of you!. (330) 302-4203
Thank you so much! I just ordered my first roll and am excited to try it out. Question for you, how do you germinate the seeds in the long troughs? Usually they start in 10x20 flats weighted in a dark space. We are using long 4” wide troughs with a hydroponic setup. Thanks again
Another great tutorial thank you for making these videos its much appreciated ☘️
You are so welcome! We have lots of new video ideas coming in the future that we hope help people grow great produce.
@@HomegrownPassion I ad in mind for years growing microgreens and while having breakfest and watching your video on micro's it made me decide so i ordered my stuff on Amazon and will start next saturday i cant wait to start them up...👍
i also started my Kratky ( hydroponic) bassin i also bought 2 grow lights ect...
ps: i do grow Giant Sequoia ( saplings) and weeping willows only has a hobby i guess i love gardening and fantastic farms like yours...💜 thank you and have a nice day ☘️
I don't get why you don't sell the greens with the root ? it is just as good in all aspects
Only because we use a substrate in the channel. We have sold micro greens with the root when we sell entire trays.
You and your parents farm do everything right.
Thanks! We have learned a lot along the way.
The cows can eat barley microgreens. Sense you already have the system might as well grow some for them. It might be cheaper than hay. Just an idea
We do grow fodder. Check out our fodder video! th-cam.com/video/g2bfXMc8qWk/w-d-xo.html
Wow you guys do it all! Subscribed 😊
Is the solution running 24/7
yes 24/7
Look up hydroponic fodder to help supplement your cows with nutritious greens
We grow fodder...check out our old fodder video!!
Beautiful 😍
Thank you! 😊
thank you, thank you. easier way to grow microgreens!!
Love it ❤️❤️❤️👍
Gotta love that Northern accent!
nice mom
Thank you so much
