when pentagon and clc started having some success people forgot about what they did to 4minute and beast. When g-idle was at it's peak, people started forgetting what they did to hyuna, dawn, pentagon and clc. Now that they're ruining G-idle too, we're at the "cube is bad" phase again. People seem to not learn... Cube stopped being a good company around 2014 - 2015 and never recovered from that.
Honestly... I just feel sorry for the girls of Lightsum. It's not gonna end well. I said the same thing about G-idle when fans defended Cube's decisions over the hyuna-dawn scandal just because Gidle was successfull. Now they destroyed them too which is what i expected anyways.
The saddest part is that cube artists are extremely talented, they've always been my favorites, from 4minute to pentagon to clc or genius producre soyeon, they are very talented. But trapped in a cube shaped cage.

barely any nevies defended what happened to hyuna? i was literally there when tht happened and everyone was outraged. barely any nevies even thought cube was a good company, mind you we all know soyeon was pressured to produce their debut song and it was a lower budget than clc and pentagon's but they still managed wins bc of soyeon's talent and the girls stage presence at music shows. with them charting so high and the sales they give, we just were happy cube wasnt throwing them into the basement and at least promoted them w soyeon's self produced songs, but they managed soojin's scandal terribly
to say that a good portion of nevies supported cube's decision to kick out hyudawn is such an inaccuracy (maybe u spoke to a few edgy nevies who were feuding with fandoms?). most of us never thought cube was a good company and hyudawn dating scandal was handled horrendously just like soojin's scandal. the only thing we praised cube for was allowing soyeon and the other members (minnie, yuqi) to produce and write but it does save cube money for producers, anyways

@@trash4taymusiccovers793 the loud minority always stand out i guess. but yes, you're right, probably only the few crazy nevies actually bothered to comment and defend cube. I guess that was not the general feeling in the fandom so sorry if i sounded like that. But there's obviously a big part of kpop fans (including universe) that justified cube's actions. I also saw a lot of people that thought cueb artists had dating bans (including very famous youtubers...) and that was just not true and quick google search could've prevented the missinformation, or the "hyuna's instagram post" blame which was really just an excuse to put the blame on someone. But yes, my apologize again if i implied that "all" nevies defended cube which obviously is not the case.

@@alicekerireininger4930 People keep signing with them because they want to be an idol and cube has had multiple top idol groups. Which gives people hope that if they debut under cube that they could have a chance at great success themselves. There are people that have left big 3 for cube. They either feel like it’s too much or feel like they’re not getting anywhere in the other company during the trainee period. Jinho was originally a SM trainee and even did a SM the Ballad song but now he’s under Cube and debuted with Pentagon.

The idols are actually charged by their companies for living expenses and classes while trainees, so a lot of their income goes to paying this off. This debt further accumulates after debut for stuff like clothes, hair and makeup, continuing classes or housing.. Normally, if the group is unsuccessful and disband, the company will waive the debt and consider it a cost of doing business, but for the idols themselves, they don't actually make anything until this debt (when I last checked, it is about $1M USD to get to debut on average) is paid off.

  • @georgeluks
    @georgeluks 2 ปีที่แล้ว +308

    Extra information about CLC:
    - Their concept was changed just months before their debut. They used to practice with Bad Girl (Ladies’ Code) and, if you analyze Pepe lyrics it could have that vibe. Apparently they maintained Pepe as the debut but changed part of the vibe and choreography to fit the new concept.
    - Helicopter was out of stock in October 2020 even though they were at KCON. People wanted to buy Helicopter but couldn’t. It was only restocked in January 2021.
    - Another mistake by CUBE was to not give CLC a world tour in 2017, after the success of Hobgoblin, or 2019, after ME (They were at a highlight and you can see this with the amount of people supporting them on the festivals they were at that year). As Dreamcatcher’s company did for them, if CUBE had done the same for CLC, their fandom would be bigger now and loyal.
    - Also, since Yujin has applied to Girls Planet 999 at the beginning of 2021, apparently CUBE is leaving the girls at a limbo since then, waiting to see if she’ll be able to bring more fans to CLC worldwide (a thing that it’s already happening). This can been seen with Yeeun and Eunbin asking fans to wait a little more for a comeback since a few months ago.

      @glammer 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

I'm as hopeful as any Cheshire that Cube are having a change of heart with Yujin 's visibility and support at home but my cynical side can see it's possibly just Cube squeezing a little more profit from them while they've got them under contract. Yeeun did really well on Good Girl but it didn't change Cube's attitude. Hope springs eternal but history is not on our side. Helicopter got them a lot of new fans, so a big sell of this comeback and especially a show win would really help.

    • @nightingale4786
      @nightingale4786 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

i truly think one of the stupidest things cube has ever done was change clc's concept just months before their debut!! esp bc 2014-2015 were FULL of cute girl concepts! imagine if they came out with a totally different image (and GP would expect it since their sunbaes are 4minute) it would make them stand out so much from the crowd!! only blackpink's debut would've been similar to them and hopefully by then, CLC would've had their own built fanbase. CLC would've literally been up there with bp, twice and rv as top ggs in the 3rd generation if cube actually managed a consistent conceptual growth and if they focussed on catching the attention of the female and global demographic right from debut. it makes me so sad how mismanaged CLC has been TT.
i really hope yujin can bring attention from gp999 and sorn can shut up abt her political views so ppl can stop transferring that negative impact onto clc.

Like if several of your groups/idols are dissatisfied with treatment (to a reasonable point), the company should be penalized. Certain minimum level of activity or promotion equitable to income volume per person, payment schedules, adequate press and damage control,

I’ll never forget when I went to the Pentagon Prism world tour (in Chicago & Berlin) The members said they didn’t think anyone would come to their tour and and that hurt me. :( They sold out multiple stops! Some places even had to sell extra tickets because so many people wanted to see them it was PACKED! It felt like Cube let them do a tour to use them and see if they are profitable/see if cube could profit overseas. How I felt when they said that made me think Cube probably said if the tour wasn’t a success they would make them disband. And the full group wasn’t even together on the tour. I also like to add that I got the meet&greet package at both places(the German one was more like a fan sign) And both times during the concert and meeting before/after they said they were so thankful for everyone coming and they really appreciate it! That right there showed me how they really care about their fans but it made me again think cube was probably putting so much pressure on them to have the tour a success.(like more than usual) I honestly think if the tour wasn’t so successful Cube probably would have tried to screw them over somehow.

In addition to the company being afraid of experiencing failure, the company has already failed by being afraid. They should have learned their lesson by now with how they manage their artists. The day they learned that they’re already failing, and they want to fix it will be the day they can start improving. These are people who want to live out their dreams, and what Cube has done was injustice. I wouldn’t be surprised if every since person left, and Cube is left with their execs.

The generational change is interesting. When 4minute was in their heyday, they had to fight for every crumb of creative control they got. Jiyoon produced during 4minute's time as she does now, but few of her songs made it to their albums, as Cube told her that her music didn't fit 4minute's concept. Her and Hyuna had a lot of lyrical credits throughout that time however. Jiyoon has upwards of 100+ songs that she wrote during that time she doesn't have the rights to and can't release bc she wrote them while in Cube. Crazy that now their artists have a lot more creative control, but very little support in other vital areas.
Honestly not surprising that the groups do better when the members' take charge, in all the groups. 4minute's popularity started growing when Gayoon took control of their styling in 2012, and as the members picked their own concepts and more music they had a hand in was released, they were becoming more well known. until of course, they were blindsided by Cube disbanding them unexpectedly.

From what I know is BTOB was just forgotten by CUBE until they lost their selling artists. As well BTOB had bad line distributions until they started self producing and the CUBE trend of pushing one member which was Illhoon. Also Peniel stated that one of ther reasons he's doesn't do TH-cam anymore was he wasn't getting paid. TH-cam said they paid him and when he went to CUBE they said they would look into it but Peniel didn't get a response. Which is crazy cuz he had gotten a sliver play button based off his subscribers.
Next I don't understand CUBE, why train people to self produce but turn them down each time they try. CLC is the only veteran group that doesn't self produce. We've seen the girls show their skills with stuff posted to TH-cam, why can't fans get more material from them. Also, if the girls of CLC are willing to spend their own money to do a fanmeet, why stop them? Lastly if Hobgoblin gave CLC so much recognition why come back with Where Are You, to then cut the promotion short and soft promote with a B-side from that ablum, the song I like It. Like come on I Like It was more of a mix of Hobgoblin and CLC's earlier stuff which woulda made a better lead single with Where Are You as a B-side to promote with.

In BTOB’s case: let me take you through their first years and at the end I will give you my conclusion and current issues.
I would like to add that you can see this bad management in Second Confession. WOW (their first comeback) got a lot of attention to btob, even an American rapper praised them for their sound. But Cube did the same thing that they did to CLC and instead of sticking to the funky/sexy vibe, they went for a cute/quirky concept, which made casual listeners forget about them. And, Second Confession was also a single. Then, they didn’t do what they did with clc (going back to what people liked from their past ep), instead they went dark with thriller. At the time the dark/horror concept was popular but it made Thriller had the same fate as Pepe because of how many other comebacks had that same concept. After that, they went into this funny era which got us You’re so fly, Beep Beep and You Can Cry. The music was fun but I think it wasn’t either sticking to what was popular or being sí revolutionary that it would stick out. The music videos looked cheap, at some point cube would just put them in disney character’s costumes, Harry Potter cosplay or pajamas and call it a day. Finally, they got their first album which cemented Hyunsik as their main producer and Ilhoon as like his second in command. This is 2015, they are getting recognition and Sungjae specially is shining as an actor. Cube finally decides to take them seriously and stops changing their concept randomly. They stick to doing ballads for a while, which worked but also didn’t let them explore more of their abilities. Also in 2015 we have the it’s okay situation where (while they were starting to perform it’s okay in one of the end of the year festivals) a staff member was heard saying something along the lines of “why are they doing a musical?”. Cube didn’t protect them from this and that’s that.
Now, we are dealing with Ilhoon’s leaving btob. After that, Changsub showed his support for him by putting 7 fingers up and in front of the camera in their online concert. After this, leader Eunkwang had to apologize for this since fans were complaining about it (fans that at that time wanted ilhoon to be forgotten to ‘protect’ btob from his legal problems) my issue with this is that it shows that cube doesn’t care about ‘btob’ as the seven people in the group, they just care about btob the brand. They branded btob as beagle idols, always respectful, healing and a very united/loving group. A lot of the branding came from shipping and showing how close they are. They would make them write letters for each other, hug each other, cry together, etc. But as soon as one of them put their perfect image in danger they just shut him out and wanted to act like it didn’t happen. This is what they are also trying to with idle and for that I said fuck cube. Cube doesn’t care about their artists as people, they only care about how much money those people can make them. And for that, I really hope this artist get out of there and that cube finally stops fucking up this young idol’s mental health, physical health and economic wellbeing once and for all.

about Pentagon. Hui is the one who composed all of their title tracks since 2017, BUT he didn't always do it alone. Shine and Naughty Boy were composed together with Dawn, Basquiat, Daisy and Do or Not were composed together with Wooseok and out of the current 9 members 7 have composed b-sides for the group from the very beginning! Especially the Maknae line has turned into a composer line. So saying the groups future without Hui is unsure is just completely wrong. The Maknaes will take over.

hi, thank you for creating this video! However, I have a lot to disagree and add to PENTAGON part.
    1) Members' input in albums
In Pentagon the majority of the group knows how to compose and all of the members had a chance to write lyrics and compose. Self-produced songs have always appeared in Pentagon's discography (at the beginning as b-side tracks).
7 out of 9 members compose songs. The group decides which songs they will put out according to the concept they go for, so not all members end up adding their songs to the final track list of the upcoming album. On every recent album you usually can find a song composed by Wooseok, Hui and Kino. By the way Wooseok has more copyrighted songs than Hui does. It's quite sad you did not mention his work especially when he worked on Energetic as well. Composing aside, members participate in process of writing lyrics.
Besides composing, Kino has choreographed and co-choreographed many of Pentagon's songs. For 'Daisy' comeback boys even looked for the choreographer themselves. Another field Pentagon participates in is graphics, art, designing. For example the digital cover of 'WE:TH' album is made by Kino as well, he painted it himself. Adding to this, Hui, Wooseok and Kino participate in directing the recording process of songs too.
Pentagon members have a huge influence on a final product. They work really hard. No external producers are needed, they are capable of producing upcoming title tracks on their own despite of Hui being enlisted now. They are friends with a few producers that they co-work for long long months with.
    2) Restocking and printing issues
As someone before me mentioned, with recent comebacks Pentagon experienced many issues with printing and restocking. Cube either produce more albums than they end up selling (I think this is why the old albums are still available to buy somewhere) or runs out of stocks really quickly. In 2021 the issue with restocking was really highlighted as the problem happened during almost all artists' promotion.
Unfortunately, Pentagon even had issues with proper content of their albums, one version of the album had less content than it was supposed to. The whole situation was a mess and it really affected time of shipping. In my case, we waited for around 3 weeks to ship those albums to EU. What is more, with the same album(!) some covers were folded wrongly so some people got albums with this kind of manufacturing error.
    3) Lack of communication
It seems like it will remain as a forever CUBE problem - lack of statements and communication with fans.
In Pentagon's case there have been numerous situations where statements were needed yet Cube did not do much. The scariest thing is that even the communication between THE ARTIST UNDER CUBE AND CUBE is also poor. As you said in Yanan's case, he did not know much about his activities. This year Yanan left for personal schedule to China unvolunteerly, both him and members were quite upset about it that CUBE planned activities for him without his willingness as it seemed.
Speaking of Yanan's case - the problem is that CUBE failed to communicate with everyone. It is fine that members take breaks to take care of their health. The issue is that the company stayed silent and both fans and the artist knew nothing.
Another situation that had poor statements was Hyuna and Dawn scandal. Whole situation was so unclear even to the artists. There were rumors that Hyuna knew about extermination of contract from the news, not from the company. I still don't know if its true, because there was so many different pieces of information at that time. But even if this is just a rumor, this really speaks about the level of communication of the company.
    4) Slow reactions
Cube is always slow when it comes to EVERYTHING. There have already been two incidents, when CUBE failed to trademark (not sure if it's correct word sorry) two names:
    - 'UNIVERSE' - PENTAGON's fandom name - > now there's a kpop related app with such name.
    - 'I LAND' - which was supposed to be a name of i-dle's world tour - > now trade marked as a name of a survival show
Both situations involved disappointment of fans, mailing and trying to communicate with CUBE, but both of them did not change anything. It was already too late. Cube filled several trademark applications after mailing, but it was done silently, of course without any statement.
As a result, fandom lost a hashtag they used, because it does not apply to the fandom anymore and is used now exclusively for posts related to the app and appears with its logo beside the tag.
All things considered, we have been through a lot. Cube needs to improve. Especially when I omitted the topic of comeback promotions because cube of course does bare minimum as well.

About pentagon I want to add that promotions sucks, universe the pentagon fandom always has to find a way to promote the group. Literally when they make a comeback if the fans didn't promote it, no one would know about the existence of pentagon. There were too many problems with the albums and the other merchandise. Not to mention that when Hui was just producing for pentagon, he did not have the necessary implements to work, it took him hours what could be done in minutes if he had had the support of the company, the only way that they gave him the supplements was because He appeared on a show about producers and the situation was made known. Like these cases, there are still many more below that have not been touched, if it were not for the fact that pentagon literally does 95% of their work, they would not have the same number of albums that they have today. If they have been able to achieve all these years it was only because of their hard work and the miracles that the fandom has to do with each comeback.

I didn't think much of Cube before, but since they handled the Soojin case so badly, I've lost all faith. Even the scandals of idols as big as IU can be disappeared, but they can't handle just one baseless rumor without evidence? Look at how those idols trust their company, but what they get in return is just apathy and rejection. If G idle has another similar incident, will there be another member leaving the group? What the hell are they doing with their aces?

The change of concept, when not advised, like FX LOONA and Red velvet(the most known for always not repeating but having a core character), is tiring! Specially when you arent a boygroup, when you dont have a loyal fanbase, when you arent active enough.
Beyond the lack of management, promotion and pay for the chinese member, CLC challenged cheshires and casual listeners bc they didnt had content, tours, merch, music.
And the lack of consistancy only made the fans, general public and casuals into a confused and exhausted state. Imagine not knowing when the group is coming, if they are coming with a SINGLE OR MINI, with a girl crush/ballad or bubbly color pop
You can see the remaining members are tired. The content is either made by themselves like videos, youtube channel or going into a reality show when you are already a 7 year old career idol. If Elkie was mistreated and poorly payed, imagine the korean members
I dont think cu be will release a comeback. Gidle will be the focus bc it has "more potential" like the company povs

I'm so glad someone made a comprehensive, unbias, and thorough video about the mess that has been going on a Cube. Ever since Mera's video about CLC & Cube getting taken down, there has been a need for a video with the correct facts. You literally took all the words out of my mouth that I've been thinking for a while now.. It's such a shame to see how cube treats their groups like self producing cash cows.. and you can tell they gave up on CLC a while ago but just want to keep all those poor girls dangling in a 7 year contract string. I'm sure Elkie had to pay for some of the top lawyers in China to fight her case...
Cube could've had such great groups but they are their own demise.

What frustrates me is that people claim Gidle were favourited, when it was literally the complete opposite. Cube was still pushing for CLC and Pentagon to be huge so they gave no attention to Gidle, hence why Soyeon had to take matters into her own hands. Their debut budget was so low that they couldn’t even afford a proper music video so they filmed in a warehouse that Cube rented out, like Yuqi is literally singing in front of trash bags 💀 If Gidle hadn’t stepped up and did everything themselves then Cube would have let them rot in the basement.

Thank you for the video. It shocks me to see the level of denial in the comments section about cube (the gist is practically around self-producing). Self-producing is impressive, but what Cube has done is to take it to an abusive level. If idols can't debut or have comebacks because because the company won't assist with production, if idols pay for their own travel expenses to promote their own groups the company decides will no longer develop, or just freezes idols without explanation...I'm questioning if we can call self-producing in that type of environment a freedom of choice. You have no choice but to self-produce or fail. I'm also wondering if the time they put into producing is paid or not similarly as if the company hired professionals. I hope they are, but cube gives me little hope.

Because I always have been a big fan of BTOB and they didn't really show any signs of mismanagement because they're always happy and bright and basically let BTOB do what they wanted. Also the fact that Eunkwang is now a director at cube. Now that I found it out, I hope they don't mismanaged BTOB as well.

  • @KathrynOliver_1321

Wait a moment, there’s something I noticed about what Sorn said that was brought to her by the staff: it’s the artist’s responsibility to garner that attention, the company just meh. I know a lot of people have noticed this, but it seems like Cube just threw CLC under the bus, blaming them for not being successful. Um…. Wtf? No. It’s NOT the group’s fault that they weren’t successful, the company needs to be held accountable because they did the barest minimum to help the group succeed. (It’s been said so many times, I feel like it’s an echo in the open air at this point.) and the whole “we don’t want the next group to compete with 4Minute,” Cube better get the fuck outta here with their bullshit mess! The execs should have known better. CLC, 4MINUTE, BTOB, PENTAGON, G IDLE, BEAST, G.NA, LAI KUANLIN, THEY ARE ALL HUMAN BEINGS WITH EMOTIONS, OF MIND AND SOUL, AND CUBE TREATS THEM ALL LIKE FUCKING TOYS WITH STRINGS ATTACHED!!! Justice needs to be served for every single artist in that company once and for all. They have a dream to create, yet Cube just doesn’t get it. Someone PLEASE slap that piece of shit of a company.
Yes, I feel angry at this point because this company, along with all other companies, are a nightmare of their own. It’s like these companies are a knockoff to other companies that I know of (looking at you Bad Boy and TUG.)
