One of the best how-to videos I've seen here.

Thank you for such a good video. Your camera angles kept all the important items in view. Initially I thought I needed 3 or 4 hands to rewind the recoil spring. After several attempts I honed in on a method that worked. Knowing that an expert had this same challenge meant I was on the right course.

Thank you. I managed to fix my recoil spring instead of throwing the whole unit in the dump!

Hello, I’ve seen some other methods using a drill, too, but those seemed like overkill. I found an easier way, at least one that prevented me from hurling everything into a wall:
Like you said, you want to wear eye protection in case it goes wild. You might want some hand protection, too. Put the spring on a flat surface. Make sure it’s not crossed over on itself. Take the starter cam and put it on the small circle, as if it was installed. Put downward pressure on the cam, put one hand around it to keep the spring moving inward, then start spinning to tighten the spring. Keeping that downward pressure will keep the spring flat as it coils. Once you get to the end, keep a couple inches near the hook available. Hold the hook and put it in place in the housing, holding the spring on the cam pressed flat / upward to the plastic so it doesn’t fly off. Hook the spring and put the cam on the spindle…done!

I just had to do this. It was a pain in the ass, and took me a couple tries, but it worked!

That starter assist spring is 5160 spring steel sized to absorb Stop/Start compression pulses while pulling to start. What a design junk stupid POS that thing is. I never go never the end of the the pull but many have no clue. They break and break again. Made for high quality Chinesium, this is made for folks that get blisters operating a mop. I quit buying them and in a vise, I run two passes with my MIG welder and grind the outside smooth to clear. Has never broke since and I run it 20+ hrs per week. I will ignore the floor & mop. Thanks Husqvana for clean floor everywhere, and some cut wood.
