Great tip another one to try asap. Thanks to your long irons video shot 4 under my handicap in monthly medal competition today. Thanks so much Shawn you're the man as they say in golf
Hi Shawn, I just think that your explanation of the golf swing is the best. I play with single length irons though. So the distance that my hands are away from the ball are always the same unless I'm using a driver.
Okay I'm starting to be a believer, this video made sense. I've never seen anyone else explain this and or demonstrate the club 1' away from the ball at address, but it made sense :)

Excellent reinforcement lesson with the driver Shawn . I changed to Ping last year and love the equipment. Which irons did you settle on? Or better yet, that you're a PING guy now ; 'what's in the bag' Shawn Clement...?
I Blades! Just awesome equipment! They just went the step they needed to break through to the traditionalists like me! Always loved their woods and Putters; then 4 years ago they started making big noise with the Glyde wedges and now they completed the deal, right on timing too with Nike getting out, with the sweet looking, feeling, feedback producing awesome sounding IBlades! I am the happiest ever with my equipment!
You do a great job of promoting how to pay attention to your body and how it feels!! Lately I've been working on the position you get into at 10:22 where you keep your hip from sliding back on the backswing, and your knee is pointing away from the target. This resulting in being very planted on your back leg.
Watched some Moe Norman videos as per your motivation. The other day on the course I played with a gentleman who had the most peculiar swing. I kept thinking to self: where have I seen that swing before . Of course it was a Moe Norman swing . My, MN , partner did fairly well most of the round , hitting straight down fairway then I think from fatigue late in round started scooping at the ball . When i spoke with him later I asked : Are you a Moe Norman fan ? He smiled and said , yes I am , how did you know ? Sharing this to let you know .....it s fun to be a little wiser from getting wisdom from WIG ! I ll be sending him here , just letting him get a little more frustrated on the range . I know that sounded awful .........but , hey ...............it was a money round !
Before I got laid up for surgery I actually tried to adapt a little bit of Moe Norman's set up I actually eliminated the left side of the fairway pretty much straight, just setting up where when you set the club down your wrist has that little bend in that snuffbox with the left-hand I just kind of straighten the wrist and took it back makes a world of difference
Oh, and I have subscribed. Another thing, you are so good at relating other sports to the golf swing. Can you show a video with the similarities of the golf swing with frisby disc golf. This is a new sport that I have picked up. Thanks.
Don't forget those high hands, straight line from left shoulder to ball and club inline with the right forearm. Never toe down on the down swing, which leads to a ball hit to the right.
On our premium channel at www.wisdomingolfpremium.com you will see a mind blowing series called “2 pendulum swing series” and you will see the missing link in golf instruction!
This makes perfect sense @shawn do you know why most tour players don't see value in this and still tee up the ball and the driver clubhead is right behind the ball. I never seen any one of them apply this principle. It just makes me wonder why
See “driver speed and smash shawn clement golf wrx” which will help and to really eliminate and push the reset button see “how to hit the driver for accuracy shawn clement”
Do you have the ball lined up with heel of the driver when the club face is on the ground at the CENTER of your stance because of the inwards direction of the swing arc? And wher would this point be for a fade as well Shawn?
Shawn, thanks for your terrific videos. Quick question. The sternum being low point for the swing makes perfect sense in the context of driver and catching it on the upswing... But why for irons is the ball position then not slightly back of the sternum to get ball-first contact? In your "Awareness in Low Point of Swing" video, trying to hit a fade, the ball looks far far forward of your sternum. What move should be getting the sternum ahead of the ball for irons?
Watch out for static thinking; understand that when you set the swing in motion, the brain needs to go grab the ground with the lead leg to deliver the release towards the target; see "sequence your swing properly shawn clement" and "throwing the club shawn clement" Now, for draw, the ball is back of centre and fade slightly forward of centre at address; but you are getting ready to make a dynamic swing to go to a target and not at the ball...
Really enjoyed this video! Do you pause at the top like that in your normal swing or was it for demonstration only? If you do, is it because you are checking your position at the top?
Shawn, Great video your instruction has changed my iron play..with more solid strikes, But when your on the driver where is the weight distribution in the legs is it still 60/40 left/right.?
Shawn maybe Im missing something, you say tee the ball up halfway above the club head but you had it well over that height . Is it a personal preference?
Look at 9:18. I think as the club bottoms out about 6" behind the ball, yes the ball is 1/2 above the face, but as the club travels more forward it starts to rise and when you contact the ball it is perfectly in the middle of the club face. I fully understand this now. Great instruction.
Great vid Shawn, really enjoyed as I am new to Moes style of swing but my father plays in this manner with good consistency. I however prefer Fred Couples style which is basically the complete opposite of what you do, he's got an aggressive angle straight down with the hands from the top and gives himself time to shallow the club, but this equates to a very relaxed shot with high club head speed, why is Moes swing better?
i watch every video Shawn and was wondering what your clubhead speed is? you seem to strike it so solid a majority of the time. you thoughts and techniques are amazingly simple to get for us lay people.
Thank you Matthew! At the moment, I did a benchmark with Flightscope just this fall before starting yoga; and it is around 115mph right handed and Lefty was only 1 to 2 mph less.
You can’t take just one aspect of Moe’s swing and expect to hit it like Moe. There are many other keys to his swing that are vital to its success including grip body tilt foot position bent lead knee and trail foot remaining on the ground through impact to name a few
Yes, and I teach all of the above and not because it’s Moe, it’s because they are natural human movement patterns. You just can’t throw all this in one video; it would take up the whole day and nobody in their right mind would watch or be able to listen that long. I have it all in bite sized and organized segments on our premium channel.
Thanks David! We have skype or facetime 30 minute sessions for just $59.95; see my “lessons” page on my website at www.wisdomingolf.com Also, we do a monthly “audio clip analysis” if you are an eagle member on our premium channel for just $10.00 per month!! We are building something big here. Shawn
What i noticed with your swing is your center (sternal notch) is really behind the ball all through contact. Which is where I have issues. My drives accuracy, i feel depends largely if im able to stay behind the ball.
Youll close the club face later with the longer shaft hence staying behind the ball gives more time for the clubface to close through the tracking. Move the ball back or get more infront the clubface is still open....likely
Lean back further at address like Moe. Experiment with the angle. Further lean back promotes a draw or straight. More upright promotes a fade. Todd Graves recommends 15 degrees lean but change angle to suit your body and swing.
There is one unique difference in Moe's set-up. He keeps his club next to the ball and immediately shifts it to around 6-8 inches above and behind the ball. Also, with this set-up, the club head face is around 30 deg to the right of the target. Does this set-up promote in-to-out swing to get the ball in the fairway? There is no explanation on the benefit other than his own remark that it reduces the back swing. You keep the club head 6-8 inches away but facing the ball. Any insight on Moe's unique set-up?
Too bad the tour pros treated him so poorly...we missed out on a lot of stuff he could have taught us...he understood something about ball striking nobody else did...but hey he was different so best to ostracize him right usga? The only man that might be able to hit a ball thru a fire hose 100 yards away consistently...
Hi Shawn, I noticed in this video at set up your driver face is square. Do you still for the driver have 45 degree club angle with strong grip but then square up as you get behind ball ?? . i use this set up for my irons and wanted to clarify the same for the driver. love your work !
Hi Murray! It only Appears this way from where you are looking! Everyone I show sees this and to them it looks closed like crazy to them at address; the important part is when you let the club release you in the direction you want to start the ball, that the ball flies the way you want it to; We have an amazing off season training series on the premium channel or sold individually on our website for download which has 20 sequenced sessions for solid devellopment in predicting ball contact, initial direction and curvature. REALLY ESSENTIAL STUFF TO PLAY THIS GAME TO YOUR POTENTIAL!
Ohh this is good. The center of the swing is the sternal notch. So, if you set up the driver with the center of sternal notch at the bottom of the swing then the ball will just naturally be forward and you will hit on the up swing! You should not need to do any crazy lateral movement. Just swing the club and bottom out behind the ball. And for irons just bottom out in front of the ball! Can't wait until spring. Not even an indoor swing facility where I live in NY. Hate seeing these genius tips and not able to play for 3 months or more:(
Question. If the club is open to target before impact, square the lowest point of the swing arc, and then closing, will not any strike before the lowest point of the swing arc be ever so slightly open?
The goal is when you allow the club to release you in the direction you want to start the ball, that the ball flies in the air the way you intended; see “predict solid contact and direction shawn clement”
Hi Shawn, when I try this method, it was going well to start with but now I hook most drives . Do you think this me be because my hands are to active ?
Shawn, how do you like the new Ping iblade? I just got fitted for set last fall haven't played them too much yet. Do you notice much difference in feel from your forged irons?
That is the thing! There is no way I would have made such a big move if they were not up to task; they look, feel and give you the important feedback of a blade; except that they are a bit more forgiving to boot! Which is something I hate saying because it is so important for me to have a club that is built and designed to perform when I strike it pure!!! This product is the bomb, pure and simple!
But his hands were higher, a straight line to the club from his left shoulder. And in line with his right forearm. Almost never toe down on the down swing. It makes a difference.
@@golflessons Awesome, thanks! Do you know how that stat was tracked? Was it Moe doing it from memory, tracked by the Canadian tour, or something else?
That I could not tell you; Mark Evershed could because he repeated the stat in one of his videos in the 90’s in the “legendary Moe Norman” video series.
I was doing this. It was working very well. Then suddenly I started snap hooking. Any thoughts? I was hitting them dead straight too. Maybe I was trying to kill them. Idk. It definitely works though.
Getting stuck with too much tilt; too much weight on the back foot trying to tilt too much and getting stuck on the back foot trying to hit too hard is a common one; you want to feel that your peak speed is well past the ball into the direction you want to start the ball.
I have started holding my driver off the ground at address and I am really punishing it in the sweet spot instead of hitting the top of the face. Tee height wasn't the real issue it appears.
Notice through impact it is much more toned? See baseball hitters and see how bent their elbow is and then see impact; the key is to feel that it is not collapsed and look at the purpose of the task...
Yes, I am now full fledged with Ping! Nike quit the equipment game and Ping now has the best Blades in the game in my opinion and I am very happy with their whole line. They are now #1 in the game for sure equipment wise!
i hate to be a ping homer, but Shawn is absolutely correct. the ping iblades are the best blades in the market right now, hands down. i have tested many sets and there is no comparison, distance, forgiveness and feel the iblade trumps them all. for a blade the amount of forgiveness offered is off the charts. as for the feel, don't let the mizuno forged advocates have you drinking their kool aid.
Shawn - quick question. I was playing with this on the range the other day. I found that with a really high tee (I was used to hitting driver with a tee that exposed half the ball above the driver at address), impact with the ball was much further along in the arc. Or in other words, the club face was more closed using the same grip as with a shorter tee. Do you adjust your grip when you move to a really high tee? Maybe just do the "acid test" and play with grip to get it right? Thanks! Ryan P.S. Great video as always!
I've been experimenting with "The Moe" as I've been referring to it to my golfing buddies. And I have to say, I have never hit the ball more straight in my life. Drop the 2 plane swing and go to THE MOE. Your golf game will thank you.
I swing like Moe; Ben Hogan swung like Moe; I am a 6 feet 1 inch version with short arms; Moe’s arms were longer than mine and he was 5 feet 8 inches. We will look different at address, but if you look at Moe when he was in his 30’s, his swing looked a lot like mine! :). It is all about using the human machine to perform tasks; and Moe loved the hammer analogy!
Shawn, I don't see how you "swing like Moe Norman", not even in his younger days. You allow your hips to open up with the torso rotation, allowing for little separation between your hips and shoulders at the top. Norman restricted his hips in the backswing, creating about 45 degrees separation. Your right elbow moves considerably away from your rib cage at the top. Norman kept his tucked close throughout. Those are two very different type swings.
improving my Fairways Hit to better than 50% is my goal for 2017 to assist my quest to break 80 [consistently]. But first I have to get off my backside 😂
Yes, and he went through a time when he was even longer; sneaking long! He admited himself he did not know why and it just went away; if you watch the video "pipeline Moe Norman" when he was at Pine Needles with Peggy Kirk Bell and Dr Jim Suttie, he was absolutely pasting it! Many times he was laughing and admiring the drives!
Shawn Clement Iv not watch that one. Iv watch all I can find on TH-cam about him. I love how he didn't over think golf. He had his pre shot routine and just swung. As he would say ' it's easy' just swing the club.
Lol, I meant the actual video; here is a video I found from that video series and he is hitting the driver! This was 1993 so quality was not so good... th-cam.com/video/HJDApBloeqQ/w-d-xo.html
Moe looks like he aimed right and hit a bit of a pull with his driver. Is this due to since he’s hitting ball on upswing his swing path is going left? Also I am almost certain I have seen you do a video on purposely hitting a pull with a driver for added distance? Do you remember title of it?
Terrific comment! Yes!! You are correct in saying that with a ball position farther forward, there would be a tendency to pull, and to aim more right; also the diagonal stance is more prevalent with that longer shaft too! See “hogan reflections diagonal stance shawn clement” video
@@golflessons yes shawn is right, he has taken the most powerful swing in golf history (Bobby Jones) and made it very repeatable. Two best swings in golf history Bobby Jones and shawn Clement. 🏌️♂️
@@golflessons hey Shawn tks for your insight, I tend too put the ball back a bit with the driver and usually draw it . Ball off my left heel and it a pull hook ,what gives??
See Driver speed and smash shawn clement” and let me know! Also see all our videos on driver on our premium channel at www.wisdomingolfpremium.com (just $9.95 per month) with incredibly important titles such as “great driver nugget” and “diagonal stance series driver” and “throwing series driver” where we throw driver length objects and then really key “blur of club” and all the arc blur and unstoppable momentum series”
This is all common practice when hitting the driver...nothing especially different that explains his high percentage. By the way you explain it (and you do explain it well) he is simply doing what all other pros do... hit up on it and position the ball in the stance correctly. In my opinion that makes the title of the video incorrect and misleading. I’m guessing what this guy actually does is club down more than the average player.
Not all pros hit so UP on the ball though. Some actually tee it up quite low, surprisingly...for better control. They are so talented, they utilize their 'iron' swing a little into their driver swing. For example, James Hahn, we followed him at the LA Open, and he still blasted it 300. The modern professional game has little to give us now IMO...but videos like this are much more suited to the average golfer and Moe was old school in his own way of course.
Did you push play and leave the room. This swing utilizes gravity and the force of the swing in a target oriented swing. A TARGET ORIENTED SWING. Very powerful, very repeatable
how my god can t wait to try this !! I hope so badly that it will help me drive like a champ !!! I have tried every fu.... method around and your explanation is simple !!!

Watch out for static thinking; understand that when you set the swing in motion, the brain needs to go grab the ground with the lead leg to deliver the release towards the target; see "sequence your swing properly shawn clement" and "throwing the club shawn clement"
Now, for draw, the ball is back of centre and fade slightly forward of centre at address; but you are getting ready to make a dynamic swing to go to a target and not at the ball...
A different way of looking at what we should focus in the swing. I like it!
Yes! You are getting ready to send your energy towards the target!
So the club face will be open at setup? I will have to try this.
This video is satisfying, great stuff!
Gr8 video! Subscribed! Love your presentation style.
How much are your online courses grape video
Thanks David! We have skype or facetime 30 minute sessions for just $59.95; see my “lessons” page on my website at www.wisdomingolf.com

Awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Very straight forward!!!!!!
why do instructors make this so difficult confusing you by breaking down every single element of the golf swing. This video is simple, simply genius.
Shawn, is there a specific body type that this swing works best for?
What i noticed with your swing is your center (sternal notch) is really behind the ball all through contact. Which is where I have issues. My drives accuracy, i feel depends largely if im able to stay behind the ball.
Youll close the club face later with the longer shaft hence staying behind the ball gives more time for the clubface to close through the tracking. Move the ball back or get more infront the clubface is still open....likely
Could really use an overhead slowmo to correlate the clubface closing vs the position of the tee.
You are the absolute best!!!

I did on yours as well! 👍😀
Hi Murray!
It only Appears this way from where you are looking! Everyone I show sees this and to them it looks closed like crazy to them at address; the important part is when you let the club release you in the direction you want to start the ball, that the ball flies the way you want it to;
We have an amazing off season training series on the premium channel or sold individually on our website for download which has 20 sequenced sessions for solid devellopment in predicting ball contact, initial direction and curvature.
See my "big 4 predictions shawn clement" video and apply this to the driver set up!
Shawn Clement there is a tungsten weight in the toe so I find I don't need as strong of a grip to get a draw do you feel this?
But his hands were higher, a straight line to the club from his left shoulder. And in line with his right forearm. Almost never toe down on the down swing. It makes a difference.
You make a hard game seem simple!
Arnold Palmer said many times: Simple Game played by complicated people...😝
Where did the 91% stat come from?
From the book Pipeline Moe Norman!
@@golflessons Awesome, thanks! Do you know how that stat was tracked? Was it Moe doing it from memory, tracked by the Canadian tour, or something else?
That I could not tell you; Mark Evershed could because he repeated the stat in one of his videos in the 90’s in the “legendary Moe Norman” video series.
very cool
7:10 wouldn't your hands be hitting the same spot if all your clubs had the same length?
I was doing this. It was working very well. Then suddenly I started snap hooking. Any thoughts? I was hitting them dead straight too. Maybe I was trying to kill them. Idk. It definitely works though.
Getting stuck with too much tilt; too much weight on the back foot trying to tilt too much and getting stuck on the back foot trying to hit too hard is a common one; you want to feel that your peak speed is well past the ball into the direction you want to start the ball.
My problem is getting the ball teed up the right height every time. I'm constantly catching it low or high on the club face.
Keep the eye on the tip of the tee and let the arc of the swing clip through that tip of tee on the way to the target!
I have started holding my driver off the ground at address and I am really punishing it in the sweet spot instead of hitting the top of the face. Tee height wasn't the real issue it appears.
I notice your bent left elbow. Is that an all your clubs?
Notice through impact it is much more toned? See baseball hitters and see how bent their elbow is and then see impact; the key is to feel that it is not collapsed and look at the purpose of the task...
how long a hitter was Moe?
Sneaky long!! For those days; he carried 255!
Have you changed your driver Shawn?
This guy made my shot brakes 90.
Thanks!
Ryan
P.S. Great video as always!
You bet! Do your goldie locks and let the club release you to target and see how the ball flies!
I've been experimenting with "The Moe" as I've been referring to it to my golfing buddies. And I have to say, I have never hit the ball more straight in my life. Drop the 2 plane swing and go to THE MOE. Your golf game will thank you.
Hi Shawn, why isn't there too many players swinging like Moe. Is it too hard to learn or teach?
Go for it Joe!! :)
Shawn Clement I'll let you know how it goes. Damn, now I'll have to not only get off my backside.
Moe was an awesome golfer, not the longest hitter but the most accurate
Yes, and he went through a time when he was even longer; sneaking long! He admited himself he did not know why and it just went away; if you watch the video "pipeline Moe Norman" when he was at Pine Needles with Peggy Kirk Bell and Dr Jim Suttie, he was absolutely pasting it! Many times he was laughing and admiring the drives!
Shawn Clement Iv not watch that one. Iv watch all I can find on TH-cam about him. I love how he didn't over think golf. He had his pre shot routine and just swung. As he would say ' it's easy' just swing the club.
Could not find it.
Lol, I meant the actual video; here is a video I found from that video series and he is hitting the driver! This was 1993 so quality was not so good... th-cam.com/video/HJDApBloeqQ/w-d-xo.html
I think this one is better quality........"Moe Norman Golf Demonstration Video 2002 - Part 3 - See the Legend"
Thanks Shawn
I have found the Holy Grail..
Gosh Clay! Thank you!
We have done our homework and great things happen when one is informed from the proper sources! :)
“Absolutely nutted” 😂😂
I am Reading a book Moe and Me , very Interesting . So it is Naturalis that i am draw to Your video.
a little forward creep on the back swing, and the mini reverse C...not a modern swing!!!
Heck no, modern swing will kill your health!!! Much better to come back to Bobby Jones lineage with a couple tweaks!
@@golflessons yes shawn is right, he has taken the most powerful swing in golf history (Bobby Jones) and made it very repeatable. Two best swings in golf history Bobby Jones and shawn Clement. 🏌️♂️
☺️☺️😊😊
Wow! Thanks Andrea!
👍👍👍
Shawn I beg to differ with you Mike Austin for power and distance was the most accurate
fourftr what's his %??????????
I tee mine in the middle. Hit it better but thats me.
Great instruction but you need a new mic!
Wow now I am really confused 🤔
about what?
@@golflessons hey Shawn tks for your insight, I tend too put the ball back a bit with the driver and usually draw it . Ball off my left heel and it a pull hook ,what gives??
Driver has been a disaster this year. After watching this i think I’m too focused on the ball
91%?!?!?!?! Thats unfathomable
Incredible accomplishment! 👌💪👍👊
And not one word in almost 13 minutes WHY Moe was an accurate driver???? Click bait Shawn.....
He's saying it was bc he lined the club behind the ball, which encouraged proper spine angle, etc... at least that's what I got out of it.
Find your own golf swing. This is the secret in golf when you are not looking for business!
I disagree my own golf swing sucks
