Ahhhhh I'm sooo happy you're checking out more Epica!! They're such an incredible band, I found them not long after NW, as I was searching for bands similar in style. I love that they have the dueling growls from Mark (Issac (guitar) and Coen(keyboard)) and Simone's absolutely gorgeous operatic vocals. Can't wait to see what else you do from them, loveee youuuu! 💜

Beside Nightwish and Epica, I suggest you to find out THERION, the inventors of the symphonic metal genre. Start with "Son of the Sun" (Gothic Live 2007), I'm sure you won't be dissapointed (Lori Lewis, the soprano will amaze you)... Greetings from Spain

Can’t go wrong doing any Epica song… like Nightwish , they have a big catalog of amazing songs to check out.
One of my favorite metal songs and bands.
Keyboard player is Coen Janssen. It's a pity that the USA has bands like Dream Theater, Symphony X, Kamelot and Between the Buried and Me yet never get heard. Talking of Kamelot, Epica took their name from Kamelot's 6th Album of the same name. Simone's husband, Oliver Palotai, plays keyboards for them and Simone has sung on their album with the song ' The Haunting'. Another one to react to.
Next Epica song reaction should be Design your Universe Retrospect live followed by Universal Death Squad.

Soo much to select from: Essence of Silence, Unleashed, Chasing the Dragon (may be emotional for you), Design your Universe, Rivers, Universal Death Squad, Skeleton Key, Abyss of Time, Kingdom of Heaven (all 3 parts - make a marathon session please), Freedom, The Divine Conspiracy to name a few, and the list goes on...

The Beauty and The Beast voice theme (Harsh vocals with operatic vocals), is a staple in Symphonic metal. Nightwish were pioneers in that.

If you want to see Simone going all the way on her dresses, "The skeleton key" and "abyss of time" would be the right music videos 😀.
EPICA was founded in 2003 (2002 as Sahara Dust) and current members are:
Mark Jansen - the founder, main composer and rhythm guitarist + harsh vocals (death metal growls, black metal screams)
Simone Simons - main vocalist, classically trained soprano, she also writes lyrics for almost 50% of Epica songs
Coen Janssen - another founding member, keyboardist and composer
Isaac Delahaye (since 2009) - lead guitarist, occasionally helps out Mark with growls
Rob van der Loo (since 2012) - bassist
Ariën van Weesenbeek (since 2007) - drummer
Simone was Mark's girlfriend and she joined the band when she was just 17.
I said Mark is the main composer but all band members contribute more or less to many songs.
Mark's previous band was After Forever, where Floor was the lead vocalist. That's where Simone met Floor.
And thats why Epica never release frankly weak albums because each member of the group brings ideas and writes music for the group. On the latest albums there's even a lot of songs that Mark didn't wrote at all, no lyrics, no music.

Rivers is a beautiful ballad.
I loved this track, I'm so far into I called Symphonic Metal.

more epica totally gets my sub! that "try to listen to your heart" choreography is one of my favorite moments in like, music in general? epica, and mark's heavier band mayan (with the incredible marcela bovio if you've seen much ayreon, like valley of the queens), are such an uplifting combination of joy and heaviness. even more than just the combo of the beauty and the beast voices, like, just the whole spirit and presentation of how these folks work is something really special. i am very happy more people have been getting to experience this stuff lately!

I hope you will do a live stream reacting to retrospect live DVD. They celebrate 10 year anniversary with that DVD. I hope they also do the same for 20 year celebration, cause they are very soon at that point
My favorite epica song is faint.
Epica has released and album in feb. They added to their setlist one song that is over 10+. They've got a bunch of good long songs. It's a pity they can't do a 5 hrs show lol.

Epica got a catalog like Nightwish... a load of good songs, i really dont know where to start or end.. i think Chasing the dragon from the retrospect show could be a good next pick, it will show you another side of Epica, as its a ballad with some power to it also.. very good song.. Also i would suggest you check out the work Simone did with Ayroen, especially the Human equation, there is a video for this one, where Simone is the angel of death, and it also got a good sense of humour..
Simone is not from this world, she is a superior godess from the spiritual sky....

I just wonder Jen how far do you have to travel in km to see a Nightwish or Epica concert for example ?
Epica is awesome, if you can handle the heavier sound and death growls, you are in for another rabbit hole like Nightwish.
Mark Jansen is a genius, and of course Simone is another dutch goddess
If you do a full concert, Retrospect show is the one (which has the Floor collab), it's 3 hours, with full orchestra and almost all their best material from their first 10 years
For a single song, Kingdom of Heaven is another long epic song (you'll see they have many of those), and it's in my opinion even better than Consign to Oblivion. They left it out of the Retrospect show sadly, but there is a nice music video from the remastered version
Also if you liked Coen Janssen moving keyboard wait until you see his portable one ;)

Hi Jen. I just wanted to respond to your reaction to Chris Stapleton's 'Sometimes I Cry' video. You kept saying something like 'Just forget about it... they're not worth the crying'. If you're seasoned in losing someone you're in love with, this might be easier, but the vast majority of people will feel a deep sense of loss. I believe it's insensitive to dismiss that sense of loss. I've been there. It's not easy to just simply FORGET. As I've gotten older, I have realized that I can't continue to allow myself to get overly attached to someone until I truly know them. Unfortunately, I can't find that woman because I have become very guarded. I've been betrayed too many times. That's why I have a great affinity for the song'Sometimes I Cry'.

I got to see them live before the plandemic. Took my 6yo and the band was awesome for the meet and greet. Simone is an absolute sweetheart of a person. But the show....best concert I've been to yet. No Pyro due to the historic venue in Montreal. Coen has a keyboard harness (seen in the video for Abyss of Time)... he goes into the crowd and even crowd surfs playing keys.
