I grew up in Namibia, born 1958. At that time South West Africa under control of South Africa. That was Apartheid South Africa. We had a Fishing Cabin at the coast where we went frequently during the year to do surf fishing. The South African Airforce did their Border Control of the vast coastline by air. The Schakelton! What a sound when it approached on low level, appearing suddenly above the low misty clouds and rumbling its way into the north. What a sound and appearance. Wonderfull!

As a child, I used to watch these old ladies fly in and out of Gibraltar where my father was stationed as the RAF Dental officer at RAF Northfront. Even then as a 7-yr old, I could tell they barely had enough power to get into the air off the Gibraltar runway. I think their rate of climb on full power was in the region of 2ft/minute!! ;-)

I had a relative who flew these and he said that if you lost an engine you were in a descent - they had this happen and had to throw anything and everything that could be unbolted over the side in order to get back to land.

A little tired! Without cert of airworthiness and permit to fly, the standard of maintenance still needs to be thorough, but only expensive enough to maintain electrics & hydraulics, try to ensure that the engines don't damage themselves and the props stay on! (Still expensive.)
