- This is a longer video that shows the start sequence of a Bristol Hercules engine and a bit of ground-running. They did encounter a small issue with a spring so the actual running doesn't start until 03:40. However, the footage up until that point has some interesting parts, so make sure to watch that as well.
This is probably our best video so far with a nice full frame view of the engine and its beautiful exhaust note coming right at us. Also note how the exhaust pipe goes from green to brown as it heats up.

Love seeing old bits of kit, lovingly restored to running condition and not sat in a museum gathering dust. Love the way the exhaust changed colour as the engine got to runnong temp. Nice one!.
The lack of valve train noise really makes this motor sound satisfying! A true marvel of aviation engineering and power!
There is still valve train noise, it just sounds different. The sleeve valve actuation mechanism inside the block is hideously complicated, each sleeve has its own gear fed off of other gears. Lots of gear and linear slider pin noise present.
@@GGigabiteM It looks complicated but that's mostly because there are 14 cylinders and they're all driven from the front (shafts pass between the front cylinders to drive the sleeves of the rear ones).
@@nerd1000ify I know how sleeve valve engines work, which is why I said what I did.
I've seen exploded diagrams of the Hercules and the Centaurus.
@GGigabiteM it's certainly more complicated than a traditional radial with cam rings, but my point is that the complexity is mostly a matter of the multitude of cylinders. If you look at a single cylinder it's not too bad (in fact there are less parts in the valve train than there would be for a poppet valve single) but they've coped that 14 times around the engine which results in the whole 'Swiss watch' look.

i love seeing and hearing these old warbird engines running , a beautiful piece of history ,,I love piston airplane engines
i live in the USA and have a large collection of diesel and gasoline truck and tractor engines ,most notably detroit 2 stroke diesels which i have over 100 of going all the way back to WW2 ,,and one special engine i would dearly love to restore and that's a 1943 Allison V-1710 ,,i also have a nearly complete packard merlin engine i found in a warehouse that i was contracted to demolish

It’s a sleeve valve.
It doesn't have a camshaft.The sleeve valves are gear driven off the crankshaft hence no interval for valve adjustment.Radials don't have camshafts in the true meaning,they have a cam ring fixed to the crank that acts on pushrods and rockers like conventional OHV engine and therefore need for periodic adjustment off the linkage.
Fortunately the new factory fresh engine started very quickly. This takes forever.

Oh yeah loved the video by the way. The first big horsepower engine I ever saw first-hand was when I took a ride in a modified P-51. I wish 8 years old and have been flying my dad's tri-pacer for a year-and-a-half and thought wow this flying stuff is cool and then I met Johnny Rutherford.!!! Holyshit Batman

A familiar sound! I worked as an engine fitter on the Hastings on first line, then some second line and engine bay work for two years... Flew half way around the world as Crew as well, got over a hundred hours P2 and PUT (Thanks Mick)! Reckon I could still strip one down and rebuild if I had to. Most engine work was restricted to simple maintenance as we had numerous spare brand new engines so didnt bother with major strip downs. Flying back from Gib in 1972 I think it was, we had No3 engine blow up, middle of the bay of Biscay, a LOT of Oil (30 Gallons to be exact) then No2 went awol with a fault, two feathered props but we made it back home, cut a swathe through the Heathrow Stack ;-) lol Great times. (BTW you started using a KiGas pump)..

@@stranraerwal I would think he means the 'Handley Page Hasting' which I also worked on. I also worked on the 'Vickers Valletta' and 'Varsity' which were powered by another mark of Hercules. On the Valletta when we did some run ups we had cowlings off and the aircraft ladder tied off on the engine with me up the steps hanging on for dear life while the engine was run up to take off power to check for oil and exhaust leaks we used to do this for the air intake shutter to be checked amongst other systems. I also went many thousands of miles and hours in the air as a 'flying spanner' pulled along by the beautiful Bristol Hercules.

Nothing like the sound of a large displacement radial!
I multiplied x4 as with a former seaplane (Short S.45A Solent) had. It was like actually flying with these four monsters running! (There was one in Oakland, CA on static display that I did have a chance to board. That was a number of years ago now whether she has been totally restored in air worthy condition, I just do not know.

This engine produce a unique sound, very nice technology, i known it from the 2040hp SNECMA Bristol Hercules from the Nord 2501 Noratlas, and the only radial who make blue flames in the night (conventional radials have more orange flames because run richer....
Orange flames indicate incomplete combustion, not a rich fuel mixture. Sleeve valve engines are more efficient at getting a more uniform charge in the cylinder, so it tends to burn cleaner.
the downfall of the sleeve-valve engine was their horrible oil consumption ,they were much simpler in terms of their valve gear because they had none , the engine was considerably narrower in diameter than a similar sized non sleeve valve engine
@@wildcoyote34 that's totaly false: in good condition was the oil consumption comparable to the oil consumption from a US radial similar power (and TBO from the Bristol engines was 30% higher as US radials!): i see this myself because i was mecanic on Snecma Bristol Hercules (Noratlas aircraft): this engines (Bristol 739 2040HP) was built in France under license up to 1961...Only early conception Knight engines (use for example on some 30's french cars Panhard Levassor up to the 1938 "Dynamic") was oil eaters and the TBO steep was only 30000km!!!, but the Bristol technology is totaly different and much better!
@leneanderthalien actually it is NOT false at all but completely TRUE , the downfall of the sleeve valve engine was indeed it's oil usage and it's extreme complex gear train ,,and the ever increasing size of more conventional poppet valve engines which were easier to produce and cheaper as well ,,there wasn't any one thing the killed them ,,the sleeve valve engine was one of those things that was pretty much a british only thing just like the usage of water cooled engines only a very few american designed planes had liquid cooled engines ,,european planes were pretty much evenly split half and half

Look up Guy Martin's Merlin video. He talks about what happened to his engine when he took the rev limiter off and it jumped the chocks and ran off across the workshop at full power!

Hi Johan,
how do you start your engine. Do you need the "shower of sparks" from an iginition vibrator? (I think, this is the "ticking" sound , before you crank the starter). I don´t need one for starting my Curtiss-engine. Do you also need a primer for starting it, or can you start it only with the carburetor? If I start my engine, I have to use an external, electric-driven fuel pump and only a primer and when engine is running on the primer, than I have to open mixture on the carburetor to "auto-rich" position and not before. My R-3350-32-WA is an "only carburetor" engine, that means, it doesn´t have any injection pumps.
I`m a little bit afraid, mounting a cut-off prop. I know, it is necessarry for cooling radials. We are working on a four-blade-prop this year and I hope, it will work.

***** I've just spoken to our operator and he says that the ticking sound is the fuel pump and that he is using "shower of sparks" even though you don't have to. It will probably start anyway. Apparently the primer goes straight into the compressor and we haven't tried to start it using only the carburettor, we're not sure whether it would actually start.

Is it that hard to crank after it has been warmed up and started? What I mean is if you shut it off right now will it crank right back immediately or do you have to froch with it again to get it smoking

the air dillution produced from the propeller is so strong that the t° not significantly rise up behind the engine...

Imagine being the pilot that has to trust that engine back in the day. It takes multiple tries to start it while spitting and sputtering just to get it started then you have to fly with it lol
Remember, these engines are older than most of the people watching this.
Thing is, there are steps to starting the monsters, it's NOT supposed to start immediately, it spins to pump oil first then a couple attempts and boom.. off she goes. These radial engines were extremely reliable to fly with. There was a saying.. only a round cowl fighter is a true fighter plane lol... another was "if you want to impress your girl in WWII take a pic sitting in a p-51,.. If you want to come back from the battle sit in a p-47... I don't have a hercules but would love one. Fantastic machines
I am not downing the p-51 in any way guys n gals, just happen to love the radials and corsairs. p-47s etc... my buddy is p-51 all the way and cannot stand when i tell him it wasn't a great plane, just had a bigger gas tank and if they wanted it to be perfect it should have had a round cowl and same engine as the corsair....whistling death... hehe... of course it was a great plane, but don't tell him i said so lol
Daddski 1 good info that makes sense. How does the oiling system work in them. Since there is a cylinder on the bottom facing down where does the oil drain to and how does it not collect on the bottom (top) of the bottom cylinders piston
@@GLeszega this is a great little video to show basics, they were oil piggies lol, but i can tell you on the miniatures I have (all 5 through 9 cylinder engines on giant scale r/c planes ranging from 80 cc to 450 cc) the top cylinder never caused any issues, oil flow is basically injected then trickles. the videos are better at explaining. The issues i always had were the bottom 2 cylinders loading up and trying to drop out due to excess of fuel/oils. these run very much the same as the big boys jsut smaller. There are two siphon tubes that help with the circulation and moves the liquids from bottom back to top if that makes sense?

Is there a gearbox between the engine and prop? Overdriven, under driven? By how much?
According to the info in British Piston Aero Engines by Alec Lumsden they have a geared epicyclic reduction of 0.5:1 up to mk2 and 0.444:1 mk3 onwards as far as I can gather.

for 39 litre engine , this need a large amouth of start pilot! more seriously, on all radial engines who not run (they are dry sump engines), oil did fill the lover cylinders through the piston rings, and this oil need to be evacuated before the engine is able to run clean...
