The recruitment of successful business people to replace the lawyers that permeate government, is brilliant. This is the way it is supposed to be. The country would be better served if they would institute this policy for all future elected officials.
Are you sure? The Great Depression was cause businessmen running away with their ideas regardless of the consequences to the nations stability which then led to the rebound. Actually find it funny that it is about 100 years ago and we are following similar patterns to what led to the flip last time.
@ The depression in the 30s was caused by the Federal Reserve’s mismanagement on money supply and a lack restraint on credit. I have no idea what you are referring to in your comment. The conditions that precipitated the collapse have been building in our country over the past few years. The buying power of the dollar has declined to 3% of what it was in 1971. Stocks are being traded at ridiculous multiples. Many business people are skilled in cutting costs, improving efficiency and increasing benefits.
Lawyers may understand the legal system well, but most are incapable of governance. Too many lawyers in government, and as politicians, slows growth considerably.
@ many business people are also good at failing multiple times and relying on things like bankruptcies and protection of corporations decision makers to exploit the country while gaining rapid wealth. I’m not against stockholders gaining returns but you can only squeeze a lemon so much unless you innovate. Cost cutting doesn’t mean much, we have seen how many businesses somehow went from high quality to low quality and others just took over sectors to end up with the same practices. Instead it was college kids giving away tools and technology and research followed by a few years of advancements and then followed by MBAs trying to extract max value without refilling the well with new innovations. What a cabinet needs is variety. Businessmen, engineers, policymakers, someone with an ear to the people, not one class of people getting direct access to favor their business ventures.

If I understand/remember correctly, the Schrodinger's cat thought experiment is not in the box versus out of the box, it's whether the cat in the box is dead or alive. So the probabilistic nature of the decay triggers the death of the cat in a probabilistic manner.

Great episode… looking forward to some insights from David S next week…. That’s a beautiful and interesting background David. Would appreciate if you can share what it is.
It should be stated when talking about breaking encryption, Willow, the new quantum computer chip from Google has 105 physical cubits. However, you will need thousands of logical cubits to break current encryption. Now, depending on how much they can get the error rate down, it could take tens of thousands up to possible millions of physical cubits to get enough logical cubits to break modern encryption standards. So I don’t think it’s right around the corner. However, it is on the horizon.
Another thing is Friedberg misspeaks at 30:55 - "All modern encryption standards ... all computer technology is built on algorithms that are based on number factorization." What he means here is that asymmetric cryptography which underpins the PKI that (almost) all networking is based on (e.g. certificates). Symmetric cryptography like AES is not based on number factorization, rather much of it is based on hash functions and/or other forms of Shannon information confusion and diffusion. AFAICT it is still debated on how susceptible various symmetric preimage attacks are to quantum algorithms, but Grover's algorithm is thought to provide quadratic speedup.
@@jannichi6431 yes. More of what you see a quantum computer is is actually just a huge elaborate cooling system to keep the chips at near absolute zero
I actually kinda like this Keith guy. I feel like Sacks doesn't like to listen to science corner - even if the topics discussed will impact AI/Crypto and the things he's supposed to be advising on.
In the double slit experiment Friedberg referenced, it is not the simple act of observation that causes the collapse of the wave function. The measurement device that is used usually adds some energy to the equation and measurement = interaction. For example, if you shine light to detect the particle’s position, the light’s photons impart energy and disturb the wave-like nature of the particle. This disturbance causes the particle to appear in one place (a particle-like behavior). This collapse isn’t mystical-it’s a physical result of the interaction. I am amazed how many people still gloss over this point 🤌
Having worked in government for part of my career I always thought that government employees should be required to work in the private sector after so many years of service. Then they would understand the stressors of the average citizen.

These kids’ egos get in the way of they insist upon putting their stamp on things. Wrong. When you literally have billions of folks who already know how to use your interface there is NO BETTER WAY to do it. If it takes each user an hour to become proficient at using the "new" way, you have burned over 1 billion man hours of human effort. There is literally NO BETTER WAY TO DO IT - EVER. This is why it’s so important to get it right the first time.
Sacks is bullshiting us, no one is too busy to do a 2 hour pod once a week.
Please bring back Sacks!
No more Sacks? I'm out.
Yeahhhh this podcast is dead without Sacks.
Not that I don't enjoy the 3 of you, but without him.....its....uhhh......yeah....
Im just now realizing just a couple minutes in, I was only really watching for him PLUS all of you 3.
It works when all of you are together. Cut out Sacks? L.
This is an L take. Love Sacks but it's refreshing to give tech the spotlight for a change. it wasn't supposed to be a politics podcast.
Chamath really entertained with the nerds @27:58
Miss sacks 😢
great podcast! thank you !
Sacks we miss you!!!
Not sure how I should listen to this pod now, given the direct political link and tech taking over power of us
