I am doing my PhD in Quantum Computing. It feels good to see Journalist Palki Sharma clearly mentioning: - Quantum Computers won't replace the computers we have today. They are for only special problems. - It may take a decade or more to break encryption with a quantum computer.
sadly, i am not satisfied with the kind of benchmark google did to prove its performance. they run tests on Random Search Circuit Sampling, which absolutely does nothing and gives no useful output, its not useful in anyway. the computation itself is random search, so obviously its going to take infinite time. any real world useful application would prove its performance to a comparable scale, just like time required for solving/breaking 356 bit encryption, cracking new drug development etc,. obviously these computers solve a different class of problems, but more they relate to real life, people would understand better.
You are right, it is not a correct way to show the computer's supremacy over it's classical counterparts. But deep down tha it is more of an achievement of plausible quantum error correction - errors going down with the increase of quantum bits. This achievement is one of the biggest of milestones for Quantum Computing I feel.

Talk about the specific problem that they used to test the chip? How did they know the problem was actually solved? Answer from willow needs to be verified.
For some problems, their answers can be verified quicker than the time taken to solve the problem. For other problems, researchers are doing work to find quick ways for it.
This was some equation that is a benchmark for a quantum computer, if they solve it, the computer is quantum. I don't remember the name (of the equation) though

The difference between Quantum processor and a Binary processor is, the Quantum processor works better with stored data, not real time data. For the sequential processes, Quantum and Binary processors performance is same. Usually the AI combined with Quantum computing on available set of data can work like a charm.
