I minored in Econ with a B+ average (3.75) When George Bush II cut taxes and increased spending, I was certain it would lead to inflation. Instead we wound up with deflation. This went against everything I was taught in Economics. (I didn't major in Econ because of a required advanced math course I couldn't pass.) During the Obama years it finally hit me.
China brought a billion new workers into the capitalist system. Over a ten year period. Never in history had a billion new capitalist workers been added during a ten year period. The Chinese, working for a fourth of American wages, brought down the cost of manufactured goods by half. Thus starting about 1997, we began seeing deflation because of cheap Chinese labor. Our Fed and Congress fought deflation fears from around 2001 to around the end of Covid.
But with us adding tariffs to the Chinese goods and strongly limiting the American companies the Chinese could buy, we raised prices.
I don't care if you don't like this. It is reality. How do you not understand cheaper Chinese costs drive down American prices? No, there is much about China I don't like. But unlike most people, I like reality not my hopey-wishy politics.
Around 2021, Biden got hit with a double whammy. First Covid supply chain problems raised prices. Second, Trump and Biden's Chinese tariffs raised prices. Biden should not have ran a 4 trillion dollar deficit. (Nor Trump an 8 billion deficit in their four years). But reality is they did from the fact that from around 2001 to the end of Covid, we were in a deflationary cycle. And nobody really knows the economic future as it would meaning knowing the spending habits, both consumer and business, of all 7 billion humans every morning.
One of the biggest inflation factors going forward is tariffs on the Chinese. Again, I don't like the Chinese, but I love reality. And the reality is raising tariffs on the Chinese will increase inflation in the US. This in part because if we put tariffs on everyone, the US can sell to about 21% of the world's economy outside high tech products and hundred billion dollar investments. The Chinese will be able to sell to the 79% of the world's economy that isn't North America for products that depend on price, not hi-tech and tremendous investments. If you hate the Chinese enough to love raising tariffs on them, fine. But don't then complain about higher prices. The two are connected no matter what your politics want to believe. The 79% of the world's economy that isn't North America will favor the Chinese over the Americans on things that sell on cost. Why should a person in Poland or Saudi Arabia buy a $10 American made hammer when they can buy a $5 Chinese made hammer? Because you want them to? Really? And don't give me that not facing Reality of saying a Chinese hammer isn't as high quality as an American hammer. You want it to be so. But the rest of the world doesn't really care what you or I want. And that is Reality. Best of luck to you.

Well said! Given the time it takes to launch a new business to manufacture goods that were outsourced decades ago, the immediate price inflation that consumers will feel is going to be very, very painful. Add to this the overvaluation of the stock market, de-dollarization in BRICS transactions, and the weaponization of dollar denominated assets and you have the perfect recipe for the acceleration of our national decline.
I'm reading Dalio's book "Principles for Dealing with The Changing World Order - Why Nations Succeed and Fail" and the chart on page 52 seems to show exactly where we are in the normal cycle of the decline of a world power. So far, there doesn't seem to have been any superpower that has escaped Thucydides Trap, and nothing that I'm seeing in the incoming administration gives me any confidence that their plans will somehow succeed where no other nation has. In fact, rather than a Manhattan Project of our best & brightest, the proposed appointees seem to be mostly tv personalities, corrupt businessmen, and extremist ideologues.
While we do have significant internal resources to draw upon, we have been monetizing our extravagant debt-driven lifestyles and political leaders are judged by how consumers feel about their ability to consume & service their debts. This is not the road to sustainable living on a beleaguered planet transitioning to a global climate state change...

@@kevinsutube1p528 China has strategically positioned itself as a global leader in manufacturing and innovation. Their products, once known for being cheap, have improved significantly, becoming highly competitive. Beyond that, China dominates the production of high-tech electronic products and components, excels in building bullet trains and infrastructure at unmatched costs, and manufactures EV cars that rival Tesla in quality. In fact, many Chinese EVs are now more technologically advanced than Tesla’s offerings and far cheaper due to substantial government investment and subsidies.
China also controls a significant portion of the global supply chain for solar panels, green technologies, electronics and the critical materials needed to produce them. This dominance is no accident; it’s the result of focused strategy and investment. Meanwhile, American and European capitalists, driven by extreme greed and short-term self-interest, prioritized their own wealth over long-term national interests. In doing so, they fueled China's rise while neglecting the broader needs of their own nations.
Our capitalist system, which prioritizes profit above all else, has revealed two critical weaknesses:
1.The right cross... It often ignores national interest in favor of personal gain for the wealthiest individuals due to the ability of wealth to own our politics- we are an oligarchy that has elections.
      2. The hook... It lacks a mechanism to balance this greed with collective responsibility, leaving the majority of people vulnerable.
This one-two punch has brought us to a precarious point. While the U.S. remains a formidable power, its foundation-propped up by U.S. treasuries and the dollar’s status as the world reserve currency-is fragile. If the dollar loses its global dominance, the consequences will be dire. The solutions being proposed will likely involve significant pain for the majority, while the wealthy remain insulated, as has been the pattern throughout history.
While we live materially better lives than our ancestors, many still struggle to afford basic necessities like rent. Modern comforts like TVs and computers are more distractions, tools to keep people compliant while corporations continue selling a dream and their stuff. Media and the internet has given us so many channels that it has fragmented society, creating echo chambers that reinforce political biases and emotional appeals. To divide the populace so that we can feel like we have choice while big money takes over the government.
Part of the solution lies in education-fostering critical thinking, rationality, and open dialogue with the development of ethics and civility. Unfortunately, these principles have been replaced by division and mob mentality. It will take a generation to undo and it won't because that is not in the interest of the Capitalist. They need us distracted. Until we address this, we risk perpetuating the same cycles of inequality and stagnation. It's a perfect storm.

This has been going on since the Industrial Revolution but really went into overdrive post WWll and forever wanting every worker to put out more blood, sweat and tears to take care of themselves or their family, lest the Boss fires you and replaces you with somebody who is more productive or a machine.

Ray Dalio makes a commendable effort to remain balanced and avoid offending anyone, but at times this approach can dilute clarity and directness. In the segment between 47 and 60 minutes, he and Tom discuss the critical role of education-both academic and in fostering civility-while addressing the significant challenges faced by disadvantaged communities.
A major point of discussion was the widespread criticism of less capable teachers in struggling schools. Dalio rightly challenges this one-dimensional view, emphasizing that the issues run far deeper. Even Tom, or highly capable individuals, would struggle to succeed in environments where the majority of students face profound disadvantages. Dalio highlights that these schools lack basic resources and support systems, but more critically, the students themselves often arrive with significant challenges: gaps in foundational skills, trauma, and the effects of a misguided upbringing. Teaching in such an environment is exponentially harder than teaching in wealthier districts, compounded by behavioral and social dysfunction.
Tom's comment about charter schools succeeding "without money" by relying on ethos was inaccurate. Charter schools often receive government funding and substantial private donations. Additionally, many charter schools benefit from selective admission processes and student "cherry-picking." Students who struggle to perform in that environment are often pushed out, resulting in a population bias. It's also worth noting that many public schools outperform charter schools, challenging the notion that charter schools have found a universal solution.
The real issue, as Dalio alludes to, extends beyond schools to the broader environment-a reflection of poverty and systemic social inequalities. Addressing the lack of resources is just one part of the solution; the deeper problem lies in rebuilding communities and addressing the generational impacts of these inequalities.
One glaring omission in their discussion was any mention of wealth taxes or the financial struggles of the middle class. Today, even highly educated and skilled professionals are living paycheck to paycheck, where once a single income could secure a stable home life. The erosion of the middle class continues to deepen inequality. While Dalio and Tom touched on flat wages earlier, they did not delve into the systemic issues or acknowledge the role of wealth redistribution in fostering broader societal stability. As wealthy individuals, it’s possible they were reluctant to discuss their own obligation to contribute more to society.
This omission is concerning because income inequality is at the heart of many of our nation’s challenges, with technological disruptions further accelerating disparities. If these issues remain unaddressed, we risk significant social unrest and a hastening of America's decline.
Dalio strikes me as pragmatic, compassionate, and sensible-a leader with the ability to see the bigger picture. In many ways, he would have made an excellent presidential candidate to challenge someone like Trump. Smart people like Dalio and Tom bring valuable insights, but they also lack the lived experiences and direct experiences of what they are discussing where their understanding is from books and papers, Living something, being in it is so different from reading about it, if that is basis of ones understanding they will have real blind spots concerning reality. Ray to his credit has some of that experience via the work his wife participates in.

    • @ExhaultedPoobah
      @ExhaultedPoobah หลายเดือนก่อน

@@mushroomzulu The criticism of "cherry picking" of students by charter schools is off base, and this is where Dalio misses the boat. The problem that he is dodging, and that people are afraid to talk about, is that disruptive non-white students cannot be removed from the classroom "because racism." This is something that Obama caused, and it is based on "Disparate Impact" thinking - here it means that if a protected population is 13% of the total and more than that is removed from the classroom, this is "racism." No, it is about, as Tom said, values - those who do not behave must be removed from the classroom, otherwise that is no longer a "classroom." Tom and Ray disagreed at this point, and the rest of the interview sort of disintegrated and became evasive after that.
To understand this point, which in regard to education and crime is THE POINT - AKA The Soft Bigotry of Low Expectations, read an article by Heather Mac Donald published in Imprimis titled "Disparate Impact Thinking Is Destroying Our Civilization." There you will see the statistics. The question was raised "How does Singapore handle this problem" with regard to the question of how do you handle the "useless" people. Singapore has borders, and does not do Multiculturalism. This begs another hard question - Does Multiculturalism Work? Now, not all of these people are from protected populations, as the 50-year-old government bureaucrat that was laid off was also mentioned as having a problem finding a new job. But the racial component, which is danced around and avoided here, is a component, as was the fact that those "useless" jobs include at a significant level the DEI jobs that are targeted by the new administration.

That's not true. We are already seeing that AI is not the panacea people think it is. You need talented ai architects to implement it correctly, many companies are actually finding that it's cheaper to just hire some minimum wage lackey than to implement an ai, even an off the shelf product. It's resource and energy intensive too. On top of that you now have to train all your workers on AI so that's also an additional cost. There's also security concerns if you're using a cloud based ai. My company recently implemented an intranet ai based on Llama and while it does help me with some aspects of my work, it often hallucinate or provides incorrect information, I was trying to remember a keyboard shortcut for excel so I tried asking it and it wouldn't give it to me, then later I remembered it and typed it into the llm and it was like "oh thanks I will remember this now" but honestly idk if it even will remember it or if it's just telling me what I want to hear. I think it will be an overall aid to productivity but not so much that massive droves of people will get laid off.

just remember as hard as it may be to admit it but our society has steadily become coarser and meaner year after year because these things sell. Gun stores have multiplied as have sales. Ultimate fighting. MMA. Sex changes. American football. Bodily mutilation. Street takeovers. This man unifies these coarser values, worship of money, manipulation of media, and corruption. If it were one thing that is the oxygen feeding the fire, it is the widespread media attention. Without that he would not have the same power. So, in essence the answer to Trump is how do we restore the better American values of community, love, farming, holidays, etc and how does this nation get proper information and not the manipulation and propaganda? These are huge issues. Issues of our times.

    @guru47pi หลายเดือนก่อน +13

Bullshit that tariffs can bring in more money than 'wealth taxes'. Tax policy since Reagan has transferred $50 trillion from the bottom 50 to the top 1%. We can claw that back, but we have to do math and realize where the money is, and what is progressive vs regressive.
Generally tariffs also support very inefficient domestic industries. Tariffs really need to be targeted and temporary; anything else supports inefficiency and inflation.
We don't have to print money! We just need to tax our extremely wealthy people more than the current 7% (on average) and corporations higher than the current average on profits (3%). Any discussion with a millionaire or billionaire about the budget deficit, financial responsibility, or money printing, is useless UNLESS it starts with 'raise my taxes.' We have historically and globally low taxes on the rich in the US. Their taxes need to be normalized.

A few facts to consider. 90% of all of the productivity gains reaped since the 1990’s has gone to the holders of capital. Very little has been shared by working people. The only time working people were able to get an equitable share of the gains in productivity was when they had genuine bargaining power. The private sector is grossly inefficient at providing health care and social care . I think the US spends 13% of its GDP on military infrastructure. I wonder how much could be saved by going through this budget line by line. Might just save enough to pay educators properly, build the best schools and set the next generation up to succeed. All of them.

Most charter schools are in low-income urban neighborhoods, aiming to provide alternatives to struggling public schools. However, like public schools, many charter schools need help meeting educational goals. Both types of schools receive government funding, but a significant difference lies in their approach to student retention. Public schools are obligated to serve all students, including those with behavioral issues, special needs, or academic struggles-often labeled as "less desirable students." In contrast, charter schools "encourage" parents to transfer their child if the student does not meet academic or behavioral expectations, subtly shifting responsibility for these challenges back to traditional schools. These transfers are frequently executed mid-fall after the government has allocated funding to charter schools based on enrollment. The funding does not follow the students when they transfer, leaving public schools to educate these students while operating in a financial deficit. This practice highlights the inequities in our education system. Before deciding that charter schools are the solution, we must uncover the truth about their practices. We shouldn't compare apples to oranges, and claim oranges are more nutritious simply because they are citrusy. Let's not forget that both fruits offer unique and valuable health benefits. Education has not been prioritized in our society. Still, it is the bedrock of our future, and addressing systemic issues in all schools is critical to ensuring equitable opportunities for every child.

Ray is spot on when it comes to education. As a title 1 teacher for 33 years, we’ve been providing basic human needs for so long, food, clothing, counseling, but very little in educational discipline. I tell my students, as a person who also attended title 1 schools, that only 1% of us make it out of this socioeconomic status. I tell them that we can only leverage our education as a means to get out of poverty. Very few students take it to heart and do the hard work to make it happen. So, I can see where this new presidential cabinet is not putting a lot of emphasis on the importance of education, but it will be our ultimate downfall when we have not been able to keep up with the global value of education.

We had a real house and not a trailer, I also had a mother who constantly believed in me and encouraged me. Statistics show it can be just one person that makes all the difference. Just going to college exposed me to people with more mature thinking and better concepts which gave me access to more money in life, better jobs. The highest paying jobs I got were by referral, then I could afford therapy which helped me to get my emotional health in order and I stopped emotional spending and habits that were preventing me from doing better at work to grow my financial health. My kids now have access to SO much more than I ever had access to.

Enjoyed this discussion. A lot of comments whine about different comments, but I believe both Tom and Ray were expressing how to deal with the current environment. They weren't necessarily for or against different government initiatives, just an honest conversation on how those things might impact society and if there were any thoughts on how to address the fallout. I especially felt the conversation on education was valid although a lot of a persons ethics and basic values start from home. It's really difficult to saddle that problem on the education system, although in situations where the environment is not good at home, it would be extremely beneficial. Education clearly needs way better funding to provide the most basic needs (including more teachers or smaller classes), as Ray commented, but it is critical that they find ways to toss teachers not working for the benefit of the children - ultimately for society.

The quality of education and the amount of money spent on education is inversely correlated. The states that spend the most money have the lowest quality of education, the states that spend the lease have the best results.
Here is why I think this is, states like Utah spend less than $11k per year for each student, not because we are poor but because we have a culture of making smart decisions, supporting children, and because of this spending more than $11k per year is not necessary. This culture also results in a culture of getting married before we have kids and supporting our kids in learning.
On top of this, many students graduate from High School with an associates degree, so when they go to college they only need to study for 2 years to earn their bachelors degree, saving students 10s of thousands of dollars, and when they go they go to the local University, they receive a high quality education that many can afford without taking out student loans.
