Cornelius Bumpas, Michael MacDonald, the late but great conga player, the late Keith Knutson, Pat Simmons playing lead, and on and on. This was a once in a lifetime version of the Doobie Brothers without Tom Johnston that was incredible. I got to see them in Bloomington, MN that same year! Bravo!
Sorry but I have always regretted the inclusion of Michael McDonald. I think he ruined their amazingly unique sound. I absolutely adored this band, until.......
@@scallaghan2118 I could not agree more. Nothing against MM as a man or musician, but in the context of the Doobie Brothers, he took a great guitar-based rhythm 'n blues band and transformed it into a mediocre keyboard-based pop band. Consider the following data points: Taking It to the Street; Minute by Minute; What a Fool Believes. The line created by those points, that's the road to perdition.
@@TheZipeedoo Takin' It To The Streets and What A Fool Believes are both good tunes. Certainly not the original Doobie's sound, but adding Michael MacDonald extended the life of the band by several years. Having said that, I do prefer the original Doobie's.
@@brucemacmillan7128 Just a guess. Same guy that played in Bloomington. 40 years ago. It seems like that's how they announced him. I think the conga player was Bobbie LaKind. Although they were not the raw, original Doobie Brothers, they still had a really great sound.
If, for educational purposes, you were looking for some footage of a really tight, perfectly balanced live unit that lives so much in each other’s pocket it sounds almost unworldly, its so perfect… This might just be it. That’s pretty stunning even by their standards.
I saw The Doobie Brothers in Dublin a few years back when they were playing support to Steely Dan. That was the best bang for buck rock gig i have ever been. All that was missing was Micheal McDonald for the vocal moments, he could have stayed on the stage for both bands!
I steamed up car windows and explored life with the dim illumination of dash board lights with the pump of this era’s music in our ears. Without love, where would we be now.
I love this rendition of their greatest song ever!!! They had so much fun and really milked it for all ot was worth. I think Pat Simmons was having the time of his life. I love his jump to end the song!!! What a ride with 3 drummers!!! 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏
@@MichaelBradley1967 yeah I think that was an intentional nod...the Doobies played a lot in the Bay Area....though I've never seen the two bands jam together...
@@arte4arte I would love to see that. The Doobies/Frampton combo doing Let It Rain was epic. Carlos has certainly done a huge number of guest vocalist albums, but I think it would need to be the Santana I - IV lineup.
Cornelius really does a great job on Tom's part here. Overall this version of the band had more of a Santana sound than original Doobies, but it's great it was recorded.
I am pretty sure I was at this show up on the lawn. I remmeber the helicopter filming overhead. I was well about 5 years out of college - so not a kid even in 1982. lol It was a great show!
I actually liked this much more than I expected. I was a big fan of early Doobies with Tom Johnston, came to actually hate them after Mc Donald came in. Never a fan of his voice, and the style of songs he wrote. This lineup does a really decent version of this song, Bumpas sounds good singing it. Glad it wasn't Mc D!
I was an early fan of the band. I didn't know what to expect with McD but his song Takin it to the Streets was one that got me to like him. Minute b y Minute and What a Fool Believes were a big hits but they didn't do it for me. Now I can appreciate his contribution to the band and he might have kept them together when Tom was sick. They certainly sold a ton of albums with Mike.
Bumpus ain't no Johnston, but he does have loads of talent and spirit. I like his vocals pretty good, but I don't like the McDonals electric piano and I think just a "no prisoners" dual drum solo would be preferred to the congo stuff (leave that to Carlos). One of my all-time favorite acts and this version was a good bridge to keeping it all going forward.
Bumpus sounds damn good here! Not TJ of course but he held his own. And while Willie Weeks is a great bass player, this song just doesn't groove the same without Tiran Porter.
A Classic back then& still a classic 2024⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐👍
❤❤❤ Ich liebe diese Band über alles!!! DANKE 😊😊😊
My favorite Doobies song of all time!!!!
Memphis 🎂75 live loved them good seat main floor! Whooooo

You sure that's Cornelius Bumpus? I know he played sax, but I wasn't aware he played keys and sang lead vocals.

what a great band, one of the richiest sounds in Rock.
because it is sort of jazz :)
@@drcool56 jazz, blues, soul, soft rock, caribbean, etc. Doobies are those rich sounding bands like Chicago
Love the Doobies, then as now. Keep on trucking. ❤

Yes,it was the same when I saw Santana and Prince(Santana 3x and Prince twice) fantastic Performances..
But no harp ?????
I LOVE THEM!! THATS WHAT REAL MUSIC SOUNDS LIKE!!!
Amazing solo by John McFee at the end - he never got enough credit for the Doobies' sound.
It likely isn't possible to make music this good now.
Its not allowed.
You are correct.
Except the Doobies still are.
Bruno Mars quite has that retro feel
Of course!
You should listen to more rock / metal music.
Real musicians, with a lot of experience are in in those genres

What a great performance, that percussion solo and the guitar solo! Whew and great vocals! All around such a great band!
So tight. So perfect. Involves your whole body, not just ears!
Almost forgot how incredible they are. It makes me sad that I never saw them live.
They still tour. I've seen them three times and they still rock!
Same. Their music is so uplifting to me😀
They are in Vegas - GO!!! you won't be sorry
Yeah same here. I would have loved to seen them back in the day. Especially when Michael McDonald was onboard.
@@johnwilliams1223 he toured with them last year
The drum solos are amazing!

Thanks for posting, awesome.
And sombody argued with me that Rap is music.!!!THIS IS MUSIC.
This reminds me so much of Santana with the percussion and the lead solo, and just the feel of the groove. great, great, stuff right here.
Incredible performance! One of the best live concerts ever I would say. Amazing musicians
Patrick so great on lead
Brilliant song.
And on the seventh day God created the Doobie Brothers and saw that they perfect.
you do not see bands like this anymore. I watched alan parsons earlier today and his band was epic as well.
Haven't you just contradicted yourself there?
One name...the late, great Keith Knudsen!!! 🥁

Bassist Willie Weeks said what he loved most about his time with the Doobie Brothers was that "they just wanted to get at the music".
That percussion break had a real Santana vibe to it...
Pat's guitar too.

Amazing song!
My boys from my hometown of San Jose, CA, USA ! Show us how it's done ! They don't make them like this anymore !

They had a couple of albums in 90s that were ok
