Now, on the eve of the first ever sub 4-minute mile, Jim Ryun's 3:59.0 fifty years ago, it is great to revisit this amazing 3:55 performance by Jim Ryun, defeating THE WORLD's BEST milers in an open meet, as a High School runner. I hope that everyone who has seen this video can actual appreciate what they've just watched. Jim Ryun out sprinted a great field of milers, proving he is the class of the race over Jim Grelle and the great Peter Snell. The Greatest High School Miler of All Time, ladies and gentlemen. Jim Ryun. (The announcer asks, "Who?")
The difference between Ryun and Webb were that Webb ran against World competition in high School, Ryun won races against world competition. I couldn't imagine someone such as Ryun today. I also heard he had 1:46 800 speed in high school. Wonder if anyone has a time on him in that event?
I don't think "impressive" sums up the magnitude of the time that Ryun ran. He was only 2 seconds away from the WORLD record as a high school senior. That is just plain ridiculous. It's pretty much like Alan Webb running 345 as opposed to 353 (obviously there are different factors that play into it but the point remains). Just amazing
Ryun! Imagine that. In high school coming out and outkicking them all. That was amazing. People hype HS athletes now but imagine the hype Ryun would have got if he was running in this era.
Great footage, inferior commentary. Just at the start the necessary splits for a WR attempt were mentioned. Then when they passed through the ACTUAL 1/4, then 1/2, and 3/4, not one split was given.
Correction, he sucks in competition. He is actually an astounding runner, and his PR's in every distance from 800 to 10,000 are world class, he just hasn't preformed well in big races.
The announcer doesn't even mention Ryun's name until the 3:09 mark. Let it be known that Jim Ryun was ESPN's pick for Greatest High School Athlete.
Greatest miler of my life time. Remember him well as a high schooler.

+Steven DiBernardo JR was the greatest high school athlete..period.
TheIrishrogue68 For all time, eons and semesters will pass us by, but his breath will still occupy the halls of our imaginations.

Its amazing or just me that you dont even hear Ryun's name until 3:11 of the race..
Incredible
The greatest high school run of all time. High schooler beats Olympic Gold and Silver medalists for the mile in this race.

He was one of my heroes in High School, My best mile time was 4:40
I still hold my High School record for 5K in Cross Country with s time of 15:36
Kyli Baylor And Amy Does your highschool still use the same course?
That's some kick at 3:40.
3:55 in high school? That's just sic.
Thats fast. I was hard enough for me to break 5 minutes in high school.
lets remember that this was on a shitty track and webb broke it on @ hayward field.
The shoes are a lot better now also
High school runner defeats the reigning Olympic champion and runner-up... not likely to happen again, I don't think...

Ryun for President-This Time He Beats the Kenyan.
Love the clock. Is it hand-cranked?
@skrap1965 Alan Webb sucks. After his record in 2001 he hasn't gotten any better.
ah webb ran 3:46 for the mile
Too bad Alan Webb took the record from him.
Nice Video
