  • @PelicanNorth
    @PelicanNorth ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Nice review!
    I've got some lights from another manufacturer and initially thought their remote control system would be a gimmick, but as a solo shooter the ability to quickly adjust all lights, from my seat, at set-up and during a long-form interview is a huge benefit. At this point, I'd only buy into a light manufacturer that had robust remote capability. Of course, that limits choices going forward, so choose the system wisely!

    • @mondobytes
      @mondobytes  ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed, when you're solo operating and you need to make minimal changes and compare 2 different light intensities, it's really hard to see it when you have to physically go change the light vs watching it on the monitor and making that adjustment on the fly.

    • @Digmen1

    First off great video! The light does seem pretty amazing for on the go purposes quick shoots and accessibility. However, for $180-$200 idk how I feel about that. As you stated, soooo many companies are creating new products every day With more affordable options and have App access for usability through our phones.
    I get that the fact you don’t need a chord is amazing for on the go but charging a premium due to that doesn’t seem that great. Overall great product and I can see creators using this but definitely keep an eye out for other products that may fit the needs you may need for your shoot.

    My Amaran 60d (I use gels) can be powered with 2 NP-F batteries on the battery adapter that is included with the light, and I can also plug it into the wall for long shoots. The Smallrig light has no option for plugging it into a wall outlet. For this reason I would prefer the Amaran 60d. Also, not just a knock on Smallrig because all manufacturers of these really small lights do this, but NOBODY would use such a small soft box. These things only became a thing when the tiny powerful lights hit the market. The size of the diffusion is TOO SMALL to give the look we use soft boxes for. They need to have a much larger surface area. It is like using a 400 pound jack to lift your 1 1/2 ton car. It's looks like a jack, but it can't do the job.

    Might want to check out the Neewer MS60, super small, all the same features except it has wifi, comes with Bowens adapter, not battery powered but you can use external battery power with NP-750 or 970 batts and you talked about using external power anyway so basically the same thing and more affordable. I bought 2 and love them.

    • @mondobytes
      @mondobytes  ปีที่แล้ว

      I love the built in battery on the Smallrig to me that’s clutch! Looked into the Newer you mentioned and at $150 plus batteries it puts you at $200 if not more. If I want to spend less I’d rather get the Aputure Amaran 60D. Sure, its not bi-color but 90% I need a daylight source anyway and you can hook a v-mount if you want

    • @photoloco
      @photoloco ปีที่แล้ว

       @mondobytes to be fair you currently can get an MS60B for $134, many videographers (or photographers for that matter) usually already have NP-750s or 970 batteries because of how universal they are, it's more affordable at even $150 than the Aputure Amaran 60D at $169 and like you said the Amaran isn't even bi-color, so I'm curious about the logic there but if it's just a general personal preference than understood, to each their own.

    • @mondobytes
      @mondobytes  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@photoloco The biggest reason is Sidus link, if you've ever used any Aputure lights, Sidus link is fantastic, that alone I'd pick the Aputure over the MS60B. And that's the thing, carrying NP batteries is not attractive to me, in fact I stopped using those batteries years ago. If I'm going to carry any batteries it's going to be V-mount period which the Aputure lights can use.

    Lack of Bowens mount is a red flag to me. I prefer Amaran COB60d - which is a little bigger BUT has an external battery mount Bluetooth and app support

    That „sun light“ in the Wide Shot doesn‘t look very convincing, but yeah in a medium/closeup shot you can get away with pretty much anything, that’s why most „youtube filmmakers“ focus mostly on those and act like that’s all you need for filmmaking.
    But I am gonna say the battery life and output are somewhat impressive still, even when there are comparable products on the market already

    To be honest, I feel like $200 is too much. You should do a review on the YONGNUO YNLUX100 RGB 120W it’s just a small and $50 cheaper if it’s just the light and $100 more with all the accessories

    It's proprietary, non-Bowens mount is its biggest downfall. And the usb-c only can be an issue too. But the concept is dope. In theory it's awesome

      @@aureliorodriguez9942 ya for sure. I have a colbor 100 watt bi color light that is really dang small (that i got for right around $100 on sale at b&h). Doesn't have an internal battery, and it does have a proprietary mount similar to this smallrig light, but at least they also supplied the Bowens adapter. I can't imagine any light maker these days not figuring a way to make their lights Bowens adaptable.

      Smallrig sent me a message and it seems they're making an adapter to go from their mount to bowens, if they do release that it's going to be amazing.

      I Wunder how this light compares to the molus x100, although i dont have need for more usb fixtures. 😂

    Really don't see why one would get this over an Aputure Amaran 60x…
    1. built-in battery means non-user-replaceable
    2. no app functionality
    3. no Bowens mount
