What a symphony! What a magnificent structure! It never fails to astonish me. In my experience, grasping his formidable style demands time and delicate attention. No wonder why his works are unmeritedly underrated.

Yes, it is a lovely symphony with magnificent structure indeed. What a joy to discover. I anticipate all the wonderful moments ahead listening to it again, as well as to Taneyev's other symphonies. Thank you for posting it.

Thank you, Jose ignacio, I really appreciate dialoguing here on these classical channels. Am missing my at-home music appreciation group I had been part of for decades in Los Angeles area. I always am made glad by receiving replies and appreciation here. Cheers!

That unison theme in the second movement. Powerful and gentle at the same time; like a "batka" in a Russian family, the father. I'm gonna call it the "Father" theme.

Mr. Gallo, You're right, Gliere's 2nd may even be my favorite Russian symphony, but I'm not crazy about the rather dull 1st or depressing, morbid ,endless 3rd, whereas Rubinstein write 6, Taneyev 4 and Miaskovsky 27, so there is more to choose from and indeed, I'm certainly NOT crazy about ALL of Miaskovsky. But I certainly prefer the symphonies of all 3 composers to those of Tschaikowsky.

IN addition, don't forget Scriabin, later on Prokofiev and "Shosta", and closer to our time Schnittke. (quite outstanding). Note also that this symphony was written rather early in Taneyev"s carreer (1885). True or false, the symphonies are not considered as his best works.

Just finished Taneyev's 4th symphony and have engaged this one noting the same thing, intensity, intensity, intensity. On to symphony 2.

Doug Bower I detect a pattern here-now remember how in your comment you said this symphony has intensity intensity intensity?I agree-BUT HAVE YOU NOTICED SOMETHING QUITE INTERESTING??This is his symphony no. 3,right?! 3rd symphony-intensity intensity intensity! Okay-What do you bet his symphony no. 2 just has intensity, intensity??!!The man was a genius!!

Try Fedoseyev's version over the other conductors re the 2nd Symphony. World of difference. Best luck.

If Tchaikovsky were the G.d of Classical Music, six of his disciples would be: Sergey Taneyev, Alexander Glazunov, Anton Arensky, Reinhold Gliere, Vasily Kalinnikov and Alexander Grechaninov.

Arensky and Gretchaninov don't belong in that company!

Among Russian symphonists, Rubinstein, S. Taneyev and Miaskovsky were best able to transcend nationalism to express a univwersal feeling which the Five lack.

Great symphony. What a delight to hear such an excellent alternative from Russia to the type of Russian symphonies that the five (Borodin & kie) were promoting. I certainly prefer all 4 the Taneyev symphonies to any symphony written by the five and their followers.

    • @0hn0haha
      @0hn0haha 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I don't see this as necessarily competing promotions; Korsakov too was a master contrapuntalist, merely one who did not like to write his music in that way.
And, the contrapuntal style of Taneyev does not make it sound any less overtly Russian and nationalistic than the music of any of the other Russian greats.
See here - proof that often, nationalism can do great things.

Context is everything. Anything arousing passion can lead people to perform great things, and provoke horrible misdeeds.

Rimsky, although a fabulous composer, never found his way as a symphonist though. The same can probably be said of the Moguchaya Kuchka as a whole, excepting Balakirev and, to some extent, Borodin.

I will say that the final 3 symphonies of Tchaikovsky profoundly affected me in my formative years. Even if I don't listen to them much these days (those days over 50 years back *heart*) i cherish them deeply.

I would like to echo Mr. Steyn's sentiment below. I, too, prefer composers who take a more cosmopolitan, universal approach to the symphony rather than one that derives its harmonies. Gade and Rubinstein are also composers who transcended nationalism.

Tempo is somewhat too slow in all movements. It steals the energy composer put in this music.

KayBee, i always liked Tschaikowsky's 5th, but I can't abide the crude ugly, vulgar 4th (except for the out-of-place pizz. scherzo) or worse yes, the disorganized, maudlin, haphazard slvop of the 6th, the worst Romantic symphony ever written!
