beautiful symphony. there still has to be a completely satisfying rendition. up to this point i found the tensionbuililding and releasing at its best with a roshdestvensky recording here on youtube, alas soundwise lacking. the gunzenhauser ii think of as fine, yet soft edged

This is insdeed a grest symphony. I would not like to risk a scandal, bout I find it better built up than the symphonies of Tchaïkovski.

The scherzo is marked Vivace.
There are a lot of parts in this work which must've inspired Shostakovich in his symphonies
Absolutely!
And in string quartets - even more. Shostakovich knew Taneyev's quartets by heart.
