When you look at development discourses, they are so parochial and Euro-North American-centric, not really catering for developing world. The pressure that the Global North puts on the Global South is enormous that one would think it's inevitable. With this pressure, we are coerced into doing what we don't want, only to satiate the West. The crisis has exposed so many problems to solve. Maybe if our curriculum focused on training the mind to think instead of the regurgitating of facts. Let’s use this time to change and solve problems. Scrap Caps and enjoy seeing the positive results of problem solving.
That’s fairly reasonable. But you would need to realign university calendars as well, ultimately having an impact on some of the internships offered in the corporate environment because at some stage there’s gonna be no nurse interns or similar people.
He has done his research...thumbs up to you Prof. Life comes once... putting kids at risk.. social distancing is difficult if classrooms are crowded. Also putting stress on them and the teachers is like putting a bomb in their hands and say now u better teach more and kids better study harder if not this is going to explode. 😷😢 We need to concentrate on the lives at risk here....our kids, our educators.
i must say , i’m a bit scared to go to school because isn’t school also another place where the virus can spread very very easily and quickly due to the lack of actual social and physical distancing in the classroom and corridors in the school?
Yes I'm also scared for my kids. There is no way learners will be able to social distance when they are 45 in a class. And learners might bring it home to their parents.
Prof Jansen is one of the best in the field of education and his ability to think should be applauded, but also criticed to formulate constructive solutions. The school year is already in shambles and it is very selfish of us social commentators to look down on Prof's idea of progressive thinking. South Africa is one of the disadvantaged countries in basic education and our continued undermining of education keeps taking the front. School year needs to be revised, criticed and either scabbled or some of the things in the curriculum should be taken out but either or this proves that we will be working with so much pressure to force education to take place. There's no education in cramming.
Dont scrap the year just align our schools with northern hemisphere schools..ie restart the year but a term or two terms later!! That way we lose a term or two terms but not the whole year. Universities can do the same.
if and when schools do reopen, it will never be business as usual. There is a lot of adjustments to be made, e.g. social distancing, dealing with overcrowded classrooms, etc. I suggest that the curriculum be reduced to being reasonable, depending on when will schools actually restart. I agree with the Prof on not to put pressure on learning, that will be even a greater disaster, especially to the poor. We cannot expect learners to be on their best performance when they become mentally, emotionally and physically tired because even their weekends have been taken away.
@@laurabanks6144 - ahhh, thanks for that - but we need to start building immunity into our people. We cant beat the virus by being on lockdown for 18 months. - looting is already getting out of control. - If children get infected, their immune system rapidly builds antibodies and they are less likely to pass it on. People who are in ICU who are dying are VERY infectious, even to healthy people. - this is actually scientifically sounds - try a google search
Brent Greeff it takes a while for immunity to build up. What about kids who have underlying conditions such as asthma, wheezing and diabetes ? Many parents are not even aware of their kids having diabetes until they become very ill.
I understand where the Prof is coming from, however my concern is that this will create a culture of disinterest in schools because learners will be going to schools knowing that they will go to the next grade no matter what they do at school. Which will open a can of worms when it comes to serious discipline issues, thus that approach will actually put strain on educators. I would rather suggest that part of the curriculum be scraped off for this year and select few topics to cover for the remainder of the year depending on when the lock-down is lifted.
There's already a culture of disinterest in education by learners. They couldn't be bothered. Total ingratitude, disrespect and disregard for the value of education.
I think your assertion may be misplaced. Firstly, you can't say it will create whatever culture as if this kind of disruption will keep repeating. Unless the pandemic itself becomes a culture, then you can't argue that it will create some culture. Even the young children understand that this is a very special and unique situation. Once you have a normal year, they will school as normal. What would then give them reason to be complacent once they see all is back to the normal swing of things?
Isaac Pule Should they open schools and overload kids with work.. that will make the kids HATE school worse you’ll have teachers who are frustrated and exhausted.
He should rather have said, if the school year is scrapped: all Is to REPEAT THE YEAR. Why even propose advancement if they have not achieved the grade?
I think learners should also have a say in this . Remember it's not the parents, minister's or government who will be writing the exams I don't see anyone asking for our input.
Let's wait until this virus is reduced then we can start afresh because we were just in 2 months of 2020 academic year so let's scrap all and start again online study will not be fare to poor students in rural areas even the internet connection is very poor compared to urban areas this situation is making the cracks of the unequal nation more visible I hope after this storm is over we will deal with this reality.

We are only in April prof.! So you want to pass learners to the next grade without any significant curriculum input. Do you know how a curriculum works? You have to master certain skills to progress to the next phase. (that's the theory in any case.) You will create a huge gap in the learning process which in years to come will manifest itself in lower pass rates. This is just the easy way out and not the solution. You have not thought this through prof. If grade 12's are allowed into universities with a shortened curriculum, are you proposing doing the same for universities? Just pass them and how do you deal with that? We are going to end up with ill equipped individuals. The fail rate for 1st years are already a disaster. because the "normal" matric does not equip them for university. I do not know what the solution is, but scrapping the academic year is certainly not it. Reinventing school holidays, weekends etc. seems to be closer to the solution.
My personal opinion is that lost time and work can be made up during June and September holidays. June holiday is normally 3 weeks, maybe make it 1 week. Schools can close 1 or 2 weeks later in Dec. Normally kids dont do anything during the weekk before school close, use that week productively to make up. Im just afraid that kids will fail later on if they are advanced for this reason.
@@merrick6484 Did to hear what he said? There are 90 students in one class at schools in the underpriveleged, poorer areas. These children need to get back to school!!! No socializing is causing major depression, loneliness, and laziness. Parents can't return to places of employment if they have children at home.. and therefore the parents can not buy food for the family... this will cause society to become abusive toward family members!

Send grade 12 to school. They will accupy the whole school where 1 class will be decided in 6 classes or more to ensure social distancing. The professionals should also work on their curriculum to reduce the subjects. Like scrapping LO. Then from Grade R to Grade 11 pass all system should be put in place. Salute
Life orientation is just as important, due to the fact that it teaches, your child social skills etc. The CAPS, EBS, curriculum has failed in other countries, yet we allowed this government to hijack our education system as well. Our children was in the past highly sort after, now, they do not even, get scholarships due to the poor quality of our education system. This is when want to be politicians, plays with our childrens future, academics should run a country, not these morons. What Prof Jansen has proposed, makes sense. At universities..they have now a points based system, how can a computer decide whether your child is worthy or not. I am sick of this government.
2020 school year barely started. You cannot NOT do a year and just proceed to the next grade - especially maths, languages, etc. I suggest we adjust school years and start the year over when safe, extend school hours and only do 1 week holidays. You cannot build a house and leave out a layer of bricks. Be creative, teach the essentials, cut on “block times”, move to 2 semesters. There are creative solutions. Let the schools who can do on-line continue as to keep some kids in the school system following as is. Does it matter whether you finish 6 months or a year later? In the long run the economy will benefit more from solid education.
It's not that simple. What then happens to parents who are working who take leave in December for 2 reasons. 1) in December the company is winding down for Xmas. So parents plan their leave for December as it also 2) coincides with the children's December holiday. If moving the end of the school year later from December to example June.... Will parents be able to take time off to cover the kids "December holidays" which is longer than 1 month plus, and still be paid a full months salary. Remember as most companies get shut down leave for work free parents use this to have most of the December time off.
Why doesn't the Minister of Education listen to Professor Jansen, at least he is the only person who makes sence. Maybe she should listen then at least she can make a educated decision. I am concerned we might miss the opportunity this pandemic has presented for the entire world. Nature has a way of eliminating what it doesn't need (e.g. dinosaurs) to expand life. Also some major world events sometimes propel us to spaces where we would otherwise take decades to be. We can choose to focus on wanting to murder China for disrupting our way of life or we can start a new way of life. Learners don't need to be in classes to learn. In 1988 my University assignment were written with pen and paper. In 2004 I emailed them to my lecturer. This is 2020 and I attend webinars at age 49. What's my point? The poor can attend school via webinars, apps, email, Google, etc. Getting them the right tools instead of forcing the old ways of doing things is what will transform our country. Where will the money for notebooks come from? In a year, how much does a parent spend on school uniform? The same price as a PC. Data fees will replace taxi fares and lunch box money. There are industries dying from this pandemic and new ones are being born. We are being propelled into the 4th industrial revolution and the only nations or sections of populations who will be left behind are those who have always been left behind. There is a lot I could say about this but let me end it here.
Totally illogical as you are clueless to the extent of poverty where there will Never be enough money for technology. Also consider that nature could see You as the dinosaur that the future is better without!
@@cotton3912 I live in the middle of that poverty. A township in the Eastern Free State where I grew up. We draw up budgets monthly to decide what is important and what's not in our individual lives. Between clothes and technology for education which one would you choose? For my child's future I'd take technology each time. As for lack of electricity in these poor households, renewable energy can solve that. There's a farm nearby owned by a co-op from this township. It's totally powered through solar and gas. We can do this. Swimming against the current won't work for us. It hasn't worked for underdeveloped countries. The dinosaur is a species. Do you think humanity will be extinct in the future??? There's no need to scrap the year. Learner's, especially those that are in matric should be examined/ assessed on a scaled down (Maybe 3 chapters less) exam, because for those that will be going to higher ed, there's no continuation between high school and varsity in terms of content. So 3 less chapters won't "kill" anyone.
Why think backwards, technology is far advanced , churches , town halls etc. is available to provide online classes. This is a opportunity to get grips and not to step back but up.
I also thought of so many places empty all week. May be just one grade at every specific location. No mixing of grades and schools. To prevent cross infection.

He's talking nonsense - Experts around the world are talking about opening schools first because it seems kids are basically immune to this disease. - The only deaths in people under 18 were children who had serious medical conditions. - If your child is immuno-compromised - stay at home. otherwise open schools immediately.
Brent Greeff yhoo when you said prof is talking nonsense I was hoping to get some informative & constructive prospects from you. 1. Let’s assume your assertion that children are immune to this disease is correct. What about us (teachers)? 2. When we talk about education it includes (society & school) so we have people who are at the scholar-transport, what about them? 3. What about our care-takers, meal-severs, etc. 4. What about those learners that are about 18 (e.g. 20)? No Chief I think you’re inconsiderate here. But for future purposes let me give you an advice: it is often dangerous to have the perception of narrowing the issue of education into teaching & learning only, as well as narrowing the aspect of school into learners!
I totally agree with this. It should be applied to public and private schools so all our children start at the same level. The Covid 19 pandemic is not going to be over soon and we need to prepare in advance.
Why, private schools have the right to function independently from the public education system, they could extend schools days, scrap extra murals and work some weekends to catchup. That should be their prerogative. The parents of those schools pay for everything (no funding from the dept of Education) so they should be allowed to plan their own way forward!
Very disappointing to hear a Professor in education talking about scrapping an academic year for the schools, passing all learners and reducing the matric exam. This shows a misconception of what a pass means, that it only means moving learners to the next grade; whereas it does not mean only that; it means more than that. A pass means that a learner has acquired the requisite knowledge and competencies for the grade s/he is in and therefore can be passed to the next grade; hence in many instances not all learners in a grade pass because a pass depends on the requisite knowledge that a learner has acquired in a grade. To scrap the academic year based on the few weeks that have been lost is also problematic. I would think that the Dept of Basic Education needs to re-think the academic calendar year for the schools maybe move towards a flexible school calendar, as it is not mandatory that the academic year always has to coincide with or be precisely aligned to the General calendar year for the public. I really do not understand what the Professor meant by reducing the matric exam; if it means setting an exam that covers a reduced subject content, it would be very sad as we are already struggling with the quality of education in our lovely country. To further water down the subject content! So, according to the Professor, the universities will have to consider taking the matriculants that would not have completed their matric curriculum (if that is what he meant), when currently we (at universities) already have to address the knowledge gaps in matriculants who have completed their schooling curriculum! We do not need to water down any curriculum, or scrap any academic calendar year, all we need is innovative ways of delivering the schooling curriculum in unequal environments and in the context of health challenges and any future challenges that we may encounter.
Absolutely. Best comment thus far. This is what I call one applying themselves. It is actually very shocking and concerning coming from a supposed education "expert". Before jumping to this, every avenue he should have really looked at, looked at all the possible ways to salvage this academic year. Scrapping the year is too extreme to say the least. Coming from a Prof, I really was expecting much more than that level of intellect.
@@sasifexcelsolutions4509 Reducing a pass mark to 30% is problematic but it is a different argument and should not conflated with scrapping the academuc year and moving all learners to the next grade.

The rich schools already has an advantage..as they have lesser children in class. Yet the virus can also affect them, it only takes one individual to be infected..
The majority of kids can already barely read rite or do rithmatic. Progressing them to the next grade without the knowledge will push them even further. Do we want a pass to be a 10% or do we really want our kids to have futures? They cannot stay idle. They must work at schoolwork.
Im just wondering, What happens when all school children stay home ? Like who looks after them when parents needs to work? Do they stay confined indoors ? Is it healthy? . There are a lot of factors that also needs to be taken into consideration .
Simply progressing in 2021 is illogical. This presupposes that the content for the current year, in whatever grade, is pointless, and that every grade has absolutely no foundational or grounding content, that none of the knowledge is needed for subsequent grades. Utter nonsense! After only 1 term of this year, it makes more sense to begin 2021 in the grade children are currently in. That is assuming Dr Jansen is correct with regard to the 'scrapping' of this school year. i must say , i’m a bit scared to go to school because isn’t school also another place where the virus can spread very very easily and quickly due to the lack of actual social and physical distancing in the classroom and corridors in the school?

Sit down with your children and do home work every day. Bet you a couple of us will have a tough time with it. Do not let you children fall behind.
I think learners should also have a say in this . Remember it's not the parents, minister's or government who will be writing the exams I don't see anyone asking for our input.

You cannot NOT do a year and just proceed to the next grade - especially maths, languages, etc. I suggest we adjust school years and start the year over when safe, extend school hours and only do 1 week holidays. You cannot build a house and leave out a layer of bricks. Be creative, teach the essentials, cut on “block times”, move to 2 semesters. There are creative solutions. Let the schools who can do on-line continue as to keep some kids in the school system following as is. Does it matter whether you finish 6 months or a year later? In the long run the economy will benefit more from solid education.
What if the school year is just moved back, so that the final exams are written early next year? Who says the academic year must end in December?
I honestly think that is one of the best options or write final exams in March
It's not that simple. What then happens to parents who are working who take leave in December for 2 reasons. 1) in December the company is winding down for Xmas. So parents plan their leave for December as it also 2) coincides with the children's December holiday.
If moving the end of the school year later from December to example June.... Will parents be able to take time off to cover the kids "December holidays" which is longer than 1 month plus, and still be paid a full months salary.

We do not need to water down any curriculum, or scrap any academic calendar year, all we need is innovative ways of delivering the schooling curriculum in unequal environments and in
the context of health challenges and any future challenges that we may encounter.

@@clare98 no it's not. It's time people should realize than this is no joke. Kids lifes are at stake here. I would not want to send my kid to school if I dont know if he will b infected by teachers or learners. My kids life is more important than one wasted year.
Laura, it was the way that he presented it initially that I don't like. It's like he was playing to the media, creating a hyped up headline to get attention. I am not going to challenge the opinion of any expert, because my kids are fortunate in this grossly unequal society, to have adequate facilities here at home where I can download material, print it, and teach my own children who are at the age where I am still able to do so.
His reasoning strongly alludes to him also having skipped a couple of years to reach professor status. You are helping nobody by passing them with sub standard knowledge under their belt, you are burdening them while simultaneously creating an ever increasingly dumber society. The very fact that this idea is even entertained is proof of where this ever increasingly dumber society is on the IQ scale already!
never hold a child back for a PANDEMIC. it proves nothing.
@@autobotdiva9268 do I understand you correctly that you are saying that a child do not need to understand the foundations and principles that need to be learned in each phase of education before going to the next phase? I feel that wether it is a pandemic, a lack of learning, too much money, too much ego or whatever other reason, if the child does not understand and grasp what he should for his grade, he must stay behind until he can grasp it. You will fall exponentially behind when you are pushed forward.
@@ebenwiid7140 is that what u got out of holding a child back during a pandemic? When i tutor, they have homework. No dummies allowed.
@@autobotdiva9268 let me ask again, do I understand you correctly that you are saying that a child do not need to understand the foundations and principles that need to be learned in each phase of education before going to the next phase? Professor clearly stated that all should pass irrespective of their marks. If you are a tutor surely you must understand the principle of foundation learning?
@@ebenwiid7140 No dummies allowed. All have homework. Pandemics should not cause a child to fail. Too many resources including teaching kids in south Africa. Now if u dont mind, lessons must for tomorrow be made as it is 2pm in joberg. If u have any tips on comprehension, timed reading & 3 minute math ⏰ test via skype by all means, assist.
Further if u would like to help grad students with their SOP as they are alot to read, please advise as most of those students are in India.
Yeah, just put everybody through, our government schooling means nothing anyway.
welcome to SA my friend
WHAT ABOUT TEACHERS ARE THEY PAID FOR STAYING AT HOME
Yes
Yoe this is really SAD.... There will be no graduates this year

Virtual graduation- at UWC they did it.
All departments are shutdown!!! Stop working on things without colleagues!
Prof an issue with my son is that he is upgrading science and maths so that he cn b allowed 2 study medicine with Medunsa or University of Pretoria. If we reach a point whereby the school year is scraped, how will he get his level 6 with both maths and science
This will put our kids behind. This is so sad
Dont think like that
