L'intégrale EMI de Furtwängler subjugue par son sens du tragique, ses magnifiques envolées (allegro con spirito de la Deuxième Symphonie, allegro con brio de la Troisième, Passacaille de la Symphonie en mi mineur). L'aération des plans, les affirmations de phrases, sinon même de notes polarisatrices (mouvements médians de la Troisième Symphonie, début de la Quatrième) décuplent toute la dynamique conflictuelle. Elles invitent l'auditeur à une écoute particulièrement active. Chez Brahms, mélodie et harmonie, héritées souvent de Schumann, s'opposent à la rhétorique post-beethovénienne. Furtwängler n'a pas son pareil pour bien mettre en lumière cette lutte dense et fondamentale entre matériau et structure.
Les forces directionnelles de la Troisième, de la Quatrième Symphonie (prises de son faites en public) sont ainsi exaltées de façon extraordinaire ; ce sont de véritables architectures vivantes, secouées d'éclairs, de lenteurs infinies, de calmes hypertendus, de déchaînements lyriques. Le choix du tempo, ‘molto instabile’, n'obéit qu'à la conception qu'avait Furtwängler du temps musical : faire éclater la grande forme d'une oeuvre en chacune de ses composantes, de façon que l'on puisse percevoir l'itinéraire entier à chaque mesure. La Première, la Deuxième Symphonie souffrent de la précarité de la prise de son, mais la véhémence engagée en renouvelle indiscutablement l’approche.
Wilhelm Furtwängler pulvérise l'académisme latent de la première Symphonie au prix de certains excès (variations de tempo incessantes, contrastes hypertrophiés...) analogues à ceux que l'on rencontre chez Mengelberg. Cela étant, il sera difficile de ne pas rendre les armes devant la tension hallucinante imprimée aux deux mouvements extrêmes, à ce ton épique (presque guerrier), à l'inépuisable variété des respirations.
La Troisième Symphonie est peut-être l'Eroica de Brahms, mais aussi son jardin secret », et l'une des plus grandes symphonies de tous les temps. Furtwängler, qui construit tout en tension (et en clarté d'articulation) l'allegro con brio. La fin de l'exposition, le bref développement et la section poco sostenuto possèdent ici un ton fantastique qui marque toute la différence avec les autres interprétations. Ré-exposition et coda libèrent une formidable énergie. Furtwängler dialogue véritablement avec son orchestre lors des fuyants jeux de timbre de l'andante, et la simple romance du poco allegretto prend un ton schumannien irrésistible. L'allegro final débute tel l'orage et s'achève dans le poudroiement lumineux des demi-teintes : Furtwängler marie brumes et soleil avec un maximum d'intensité (deuxième thème), il réussit le pari insensé de nous entraîner vers cette fin descendante, frissonnante, qui révèle l'abîme. Un des plus beaux enregistrement de toute l'histoire, et certainement (conjointement à la Quatrième de Schumann et la Neuvième de Beethoven) le plus extraordinaire témoignage de l'art de Furtwängler.

Furtwängler transfigure le propos de la Quatrième (et en particulier de l'allegro non troppo), d'une grandeur quasi fatale. Non que l'hésitation, le tragique légèrement plaintif des idées secondaires ou du développement ne subsistent. Mais chaque transition ramène ici un insondable mystère. Le tempo reste plus exactement souple, sinon même flexible (second thème) que véritablement large. La gravité de l'andante moderato en mi majeur, son phrasé dense, sa ductilité rythmique s'éloignent de la tradition d'un simple intermezzo élégiaque et font ressortir à plein de crudité mélodique (et modale) de ce morceau. L'atmosphère sombre, exacerbée de chacune des lignes de la Passacaille, sa majesté nullement sereine mais au contraire conflictuelle 'lui ajoutent une dimension supérieure et en font totalement oublier l'archaïsme de structure.

Furtwängler différencie au maximum chacune des Variations sur un thème de Haydn, dégageant dans les plus lentes une sonorité orchestrale profonde et audacieuse. Le phrasé comme le tempo sont toujours très amples, l'intensité agogique supérieure malgré cette relative lenteur, les rares tensions de l'ouvrage systématiques, radicalisées, Une vision d'une dimension presque insolite, qui prête une paradoxale grandeur à tout le groupe final (sicilienne, presto non troppo en si bémol mineur et passacaille andante) joué ici avec une inhabituelle dynamique ascensionnelle.

In1949’ or was it in1950 in Luzern I was able to attend Furtwaengler conduct Brahms second and the double concerto with Schneiderhan and Mainardi that proved monumental in forming my developing musical experience! Wunderschöne und spannende live Aufführung dieser vier perfekt komponierten Sinfonien mit gut phrasierten und perfekt vereinigten Tönen aller Instrumente. Der unvergleichliche Maestro dirigiert die beiden weltklassigen Orchester in verschiedenen doch immer majestätischen Tempi und mit möglichst effektiver Dynamik. Die Variationen sind auch perfekt und wunderschön aufgeführt. Alles ist wunderbar und atemberaubend zugleich!

Furtwangler --inimitable and wonderful interpretations ---however I confess to having been seduced by Carlos Kleiber's interpretation of #2 and especially # 4 Brahms which I frankly cannot get out of my head! They are even more remarkable to my ears and emotions. All wonderful, and the best single way to pass an unforgettable evening. Kleiber's driving energy and almost obsessive attention to musical detail takes me closest to the composers intentions.

That's exactly my problem with Furtwängler, or perhaps with his fans; I'd rather hear music, and specifically all the notes the composer wrote, which are often obscured in his admittedly beautiful sounding performances.
And philosophy is mere human nonsense and deceit apart from truth.
The world will be a much better place when the number of subscribers to this site become 100 millions.

Not necessarily. I was listening to Arvo Part, Steve Reich and Philip Glass with friends at the age of 20. Dad listened to Shostakovich at home. I loved Stravinski the first time I heard the Firebird Suite, and Brahms just slipped through the net, somehow. The little I heard sounded mildly pompous. But now it's all Bach, Monteverdi, Beethoven, and Brahms. Times (and tastes) change...

Wow, the energy, pacing, and total dedication! Thank you most gratefully for uploading. Here on TH-cam, the sound is surprisingly good. The remastering is very good, almost Dutton standard. I would love CDs of the Symphonies, and this has become a competitor. What do you think of the Klemperer (not great sound), the Karajan recordings (analytical sound, like proto-Mahler), and the Giulini slower-paced autumnal Brahms Symphonies?

I've heard countless versions of Brahms sym. #4. For some inexplicable reason, I always gravitate back to this one. Something about Furt. He just cannot be outdone.

Il existe plusieurs enregistrements des symphonies de Brahms par Wilhelm Furtwangler, que l’on peut trouver chez plusieurs maisons de disques. Cette intégrale est celle captée pour EMI.
La première symphonie de 1952 à Vienne est un modèle de rigueur, cependant je lui trouve moins de relief par rapport à Berlin 1952, et surtout en comparaison de celle à la NDR de Hambourg en 1951 elle paraît fade : c’est cette dernière interprétation la plus emportée d’un souffle toujours nouveau, pour moi l’enregistrement du siècle.
La deuxième de 1953 souffre en comparaison de celle de 1945, à Vienne également. Dans les deux cas on est imprégné du style du chef allemand, mais la version de la guerre possède des qualités quasi-guerrières, notamment dans le deuxième mouvement, qui en font l’une des plus grandes interprétations de l’histoire, au même niveau que Carlos Kleiber, par exemple.
La troisième de 1949 fait figure de proue dans l’intégrale EMI. C’est un chef d’œuvre du genre, un coup de maître en somme. Même si celle captée en 1954 est très belle, elle n’a rien à voir avec 1949. Ici le mastering est très bon, mais j’aurais tendance à choisir la version Audite en SACD.
La quatrième enfin est pour moi la plus moderne et peut-être la plus universelle de Brahms. Même si 1948 n’a pas une fois encore le souffle et le côté guerrier de 1943, c’est une version de chevet, très intéressante, au contrastes quasi jamais égalés. La version Audite est une nouvelle fois meilleure.
Votre commentaire dénote une grande connaissance du répertoire, nous sommes arrivé à la conclusion que chaque interprétation de Furtwängler est un évènement. Il est un créateur qui n'interprète jamais deux fois de manière identique :-)

To some extend, yes. But one could also hear Dvorak in that.

フルトヴェングラーの凄さ、オケのドライヴ能力の卓越している事はよくわかるのですが(その芸術性も)、お客を意識したかのような、あざといまでのテンポその他の作り、手の内が見え透いてくる点で、どうしても通俗的な印象が強くなる。実は、この人は、正反対に見えるが、芸術性の深さを認めた上で、第三者を意識した通俗的性という点でカラヤンと共通しているように思えてならない。暴言多謝

Sorry, Furtwangler was terrible with tempi and you can hear that quite clearly. There are times in the first and last movements where the strings are a mess and out of sync with the rest of the orchestra. Levine, Abbado, Klemperer, Jochum has provided us with reference recordings. My absolute favorite, and it is not only my preference, is Bruno Walter's interpretation of this masterwork.
I actually think Furtwangler has the best tempi and above all flexibility for Brahms 4th, but I could see an argument for the other symphonies

You refuse to face ALL the facts regarding Furtwängler. He was never a Nazi nor did he consciously play the role of a collaborator. When you listen to Brahms or to other works conducted by Furtwängler.
