Back in 93 my friend and I camped out in the bowl hoping to get an early start and a bunch of runs. Instead we helped to carry out a skier with a compound fracture. That is is not the place to get hurt. It took us a while just to get him to the hojo. I must add I have had some great times up there.
@@willm984 More so because of all the yard sales. Regardless, skiing is way harder once you get into this type of stuff in my opinion so yes they do fall more.

People seem to forget that the out-run from a cliff can be pretty dangerous. Being able to ride it out is part of hucking cliffs and is an important skill to be learned before hitting places like tuckerman's... which has a long and choppy out-run. This video is an example of how to really hurt yourself. Epic crashes though.
I grew up skiing but switched to boarding soon after. So I can't attest to this myself but it seems that at that speed, on skis it would be harder to slow down than if on a snowboard. Although mid thought I get the feeling that it would be so so scary to try and make the smallest carve in attempt to slow yourself at that speed on any instrument.. yeesh...i cringe. But its not enough to keep me away lol
Because the snow on Tucks in March is like mash potatoes. Its only at 5,000 something feet-if that. Making a huge GS turn at MACH 1 is bad juju...haha.
@vibratingstring HMMM, come out west and cut your teeth on peaks between 12-14,000ft with real no fall zones. Then go to Alaska for a few springs. Circle back and let me know how it goes.
At the time of year when everybody hikes up to the Ravine, the snow is pretty much like mashed potatoes. you climb early morning so you can get a foot hold...the previous days footsteps are like a staircase...by by mid morning, it's mashed potatoes and hard to ski well. Even great skiers look like dweebs when skiing in it. However, it's a worthy Spring ritual.

It's all about the fun with 1 couple thousand of your closest friends, trying stuff that you just cannot try anywhere else in the East, and having a total blast even in your fails!
In many years back then there was a waterfall just right of the center of the Headwall. Unfortunately, a few skiers forgot where they were and ended up coming over the lip at that waterfall ans disappeared into the crevasse.
@cashmab haha. thats because this stuff is so steep, its on the verge of free falling once you land and try to ski it. this video really doesn't capture how steep this thing is. you should see climbing up the thing. if you stand up straight on a little ledge, your shoulder is almost touching the slope :O some scary stuff.
No, you would not destroy the ice fields of Cannon. I know dozens upon dozens of people that come from out West (both for racing and freeskiing) that get destroyed by the ice. USSA and FIS points don't lie. People that are "hardcore" in racing out West struggle here in the East. As for freeskiing there is really no point system, but I've met a handful of kids that go to academies around here for freestyle (Burke, WVA, CVA) that have come from places like Vail and Mammoth and can't handle the ice
I probably misread your comment, but there is a points system for Freeride, AKA Big Mountain, and I know this as it is what I compete in. You get judged on Style, Fluidity, Technique, control and Line Choice. You can get a maximum of 50 points, but it is very rare to see someone surpass 38,
haha try 10yard jump Dude, with a landing so steep it out o site,,, really need to climb up there and look at it to understand how steep that is, pictures can't do it justice,,, mad props to all those leapers those guys arr frigg'n nuts
Any one who thinks landing that and staying up is easy has likely never been there. Landing on about 50-degree slope of choppy, soft snow already doing about 30-40MPH is no small feat. Most of you would sh*t your pants standing atop the Headwall, much less those drops/ledges. Trust me, this is one of the most humbling places you will ever ski or ride, once you are actually on it. Riding over The Lip feels like riding over a cliff. And only way there is one step at a time...
The landing on something that steep puts you barely in control of anything, and once your skis are pointed downhill, you accelerate like mad, so making a turn is damned difficult.
What the hell arr you talk'n about? The one boarder jump was totally cut on the landing or crashing, like the editor didn't even care about the rider who got there on a board,,, but seriously all those jumps Rocked, props to all,,, next time please finish the boarders session, really wish I coulda seen his land/crash/whatever~ ☼;(

Whats a knuckle dragger? Doesn't sound like a skier or a snowboaarder... is there something up there we don't know about!

yes
I read here where someone said it's not about skiing, the video proves that beyond any doubt.

Did the two knuckledraggers land their jumps? Why the edits? I was hoping to see if they made it or not.
Going for a death-ride while in the back seat looks a whole lot less fun than just making some giant Scott Schmidt turns. I don't get it.
That first recovery.
My Dad this in the 1940’s , and at that time, sometimes there was a crevasse above the headwalll, and skiers just disappeared.

Lot of people there were going "Wide World of Sports" on us!
And it has nothing to do with the skiing at Tuckerman Ravine. It's all about getting hammered and enjoying the day. The vibe up there is legendary.
