If my neighbor hung up a straight pride flag, I'd go over and with a completely serious face, congratulate them on coming out as straight, especially since the history of oppression of straight people was so long and violent. Then I would ask them how old they were when they figured out they were straight, and if they'd ever dated same-sex people before they realized they were straight. I might even ask if they really thought that hanging the flag where everyone could see it was appropriate, considering there are children in the neighborhood who could see it and might ask some really uncomfortable questions because of their flag.
Then I would head home and hoist up bi and lgbt+ flags where they could see them.

The laws here pretty much automatically enter you into a common law marriage of you live together for more then a year (not all the rights of marriage, but certain aspects), so we seem to have a lot more people just happy to stay partners and not get married. As long as the child has loving parents, it doesn't matter in the slightest if they have both mom and dad, two moms, two dads, enby parent(s), a single parent, three parents (like bio parents + step parent as example). Tbh dads often do a lot of great things. Not saying a dad being around is necessary but remember that neither is a mom. Personally my mom was abusive and my dad's always taken care of me while also providing for the household and doing all the chores when I was little.
I feel like everyone needs a role model who's strong and can teach independence, and one who's loving and nurturing. In traditional heteronormativity, that's the dad and mom in that order, but it doesn't have to be. The genders can be flipped, or both be male, both be female, there could be a non-binary person or two, it doesn't even have to be the parents tbh could be uncles or aunts or grandparents or a close family friend, one person could even theoretically fill all the roles if they're just that awesome! What's important is that a child grows up feeling loved but gets taught how to function independently as they get older

    • @rosieg6989

The sentence " *you are* not a plural", especially coming after "I use correct grammar" is just ridiculous. Not only did she clearly use plural grammar for a single person, she also managed to cook up "a plural"; a phrase that can only be correct in informal speech. She is showcasing both how she is wrong and how she doesn't actually give a solitary damn about standardised English grammar.
I wonder if these people could even comprehend grammatical gender of Old English. Saying "woman" and using masculine grammar would be the grammatically correct way of speaking. But modern English is so far removed from stuff like grammatical gender or T-V distinction that these supposed champions of "correct" language wouldn't be able to get accustomed to it.

14:18 The reason Pride exists and is called "pride" is because we gays were told constantly that we should be ashamed for merely existing. That our very existence is "disgusting". So after Stonewall, when we rose up and finally fought back, we said No to being told we should be ashamed of being in love, ashamed just because we existed, No to being made to feel shame by others. We were going to be proud to be gay [in analogy to the "Black is Beautiful" campaign of the 1970s].
And it wasn't even called "Pride" originally, but was the "Gay Liberation March". Then it became a Gay Rights March. Then it became a Pride _March._ Not a parade: we took to the streets, without official sanction or even permission of the authorities. Even in the 1990s, Pride Marches were still a protest-march.
And that's your history lesson from me, Internet Uncle-Gay‍🏳‍🌈.
Oh - and the reason why Pride turned into an entire month: (1) Corporations thinking they could make money that way; and (2) Scheduling Conflict.
You see, originally, the "Gay Liberation" March was on the weekend closest to the anniversary of Stonewall. Most big US cities with a "gayborhood" would hold Pride Marches then. Philadelphia, however, held theirs on a different weekend. Philly is within a half-day's drive of both Washington DC and NYC, so not wanting their Pride March to be empty because everyone was going to those 2 cities, they just held theirs on a different weekend in June. And as smaller cities and towns started having their own Pride Parades during the 00s and 10s, the places close to a major city would schedule their Pride on a different weekend in June than the nearby major city's Pride. Hudson, NY, where many people who work in NYC have a weekend home, holds its Pride the first weekend in June.
So, in the 00s, it was less "June is Pride Month" and more "Every weekend in June, there's a Pride event". Which ate up all of the weekends for PFLAG, welcoming/reconciled churches and synagogues, and LGBT+ choirs, because they ended up invited to march in pretty much every Pride Parade in driving distance.
The corporations, as we all know, took notice last decade and started advertising as if all of June were one month-long Pride Party. But they sure showed their true [lack of] colors in recent years by abandoning us queers as fast as they could, now didn't they?

Unfortunately many teachers explicitly teach singular they is wrong. I had a high school English teacher who was so vehemently against singular they she would often accidentally mark plural they as wrong. And this was before I knew trans people existed, so long before it was the new boogeyman. I tried to bring it up to her, but she told me that if she marked it wrong, it was wrong. I ended up writing something petty like "A group of he's and she's went to the park", only to be told that I was supposed to use they, then got in trouble for pulling out the previous draft and asking why it was marked incorrect.

    • @Rikrobat
      @Rikrobat 17 วันที่ผ่านมา +5

I had the same experience as waffles. Ashamedly, I was also one of those grammar pedants for a long time-I didn’t refuse to use the singular they if those were someone’s pronouns, but I did complain to myself because “they is plural!” It wasn’t until I saw a comic combatting this logic where a character was complaining about the grammar before referring to a bad driver as “what are they doing?” It sounds silly, but reading that comic made me actually stop and think about how often *I* used the singular they in everyday scenarios, so what was the problem?
Of course I know now that the singular they has been around for centuries, but it definitely wasn’t something I was taught throughout my schooling, and I majored in English Literature. It’s not an excuse to continue being ignorant, but I can understand why some people would be confused at first.

I had the same problem, growing up in the South. It was drilled into me that they/them was exclusively for plural representation. It's taken some time for me to reprogram my writing and speech to actually default to they/them (unless I'm certain of a person's gender). My husband still struggles with it, as do my parents. But they all would just apologize and try to correct themselves if they accidentally misgendered someone. The insistence on being a "grammar" nazi to the detriment of another person's identity is just pointless or deliberately offensive.

It's SO funny that sweaty gamers are mad about the fallout tv show being "too woke" when the games are all social commentary on capitalism, racism, classism, sexism, etc. It has a 1950s flavor specifically and intentionally so it can comment on those topics through the lens of an era which is notorious for those things. Anti-Chinese sentiment is very strong in the games in particular, and the whole point is that the red scare kept everyone from realizing the US government was to blame for the world ending because they could all just blame "the reds." The games are pretty woke, these people just lack media literacy and didn't notice because they could make their protagonists a Generic White Action Dude.

my husband and I don't use the same shampoo because he thrives on cheap "every day" shampoo with a lemony scent, while my curly hair needs a million different types of butter to not explode as soon as it's dry. Meanwhile his moisturizer is extra hydrating because he has dryer skin on average, while I get by on the cheap whatever I could find. We do use the same body wash/shower gel and toothpaste tho. If we didn't have different hair and skin types we'd probably use the same shampoo and moisturizer too. - I wouldn't call ourselves a cishet couple because I don't identify as cis or hetero (Bisexuals rise up!), but it's how people typically perceive us.

It's insane to me how many lesbian couples with a bay are subjected to the "child needs a dad" nonsense. Statistically speaking, women in straight relationships are those who more often take care of their children anyway. Not to mention, men are those who leave pregnant woman very easily, while making fun of the single moms; aka the parent who stuck around. Their logic is all sorts of wrong.
I'm not saying there aren't fathers who love their kids and give them equal amount of attention, affection and time as their mothers, but generally speaking, many men just don't do much for their children.

EDIT: formatting, added TL;DR, and fixed some weird autocorrect mistakes that I didn't catch before
    TL;DR
You do you and try not to shame people of they want to keep their Harry Potter tattoos or continue to love the franchise.
I know there's a whole discourse about whether "death of the author" can or should apply to JK Rowling. Here's my personal opinion, though. I have found joy in the Wizarding World. Similar fans of the series have created a community which may be based around that world, but it's also separate and beyond the original content and I find joy being a part of that community. When I celebrate the Wizarding World, I celebrate this community, not the author.
I don't currently have a Harry Potter tattoo (and I don't currently plan to have one), but my wife does. Since I am trans and since she is also LGBT+, she is well aware of the impact of the author's words and the power of her platform. We as a couple have agreed to not spend a cent on any officially licensed Wizarding World merchandise. Tattoos are not licensed. And more than that, they are an expression of something you love.
It is possible to love something without loving where it came from. And as long as your love for that thing does not actively contribute to suffering, then there shouldn't be a problem with that love alone. Again, this is why we don't support the Wizarding World brand but we might still buy from unlicensed sources. (Bit of a loose comparison, but it's the same thing with like big market stores that have unethical labor practices or certain fast food places that fund certain anti-LGBT groups. We find other ways to get the merchandise or food that we want).
All in all, of you have a Harry Potter tattoo and you want to keep it, that's fine. If you feel better covering it up, that's fine too. Basically what I'm saying is let people be and don't shame them if they still want to express their love for a franchise which has some shit attached to its creation/creator. As long as they aren't actively supporting said shitty creation/creator, it shouldn't be a problem.
Anywho, uh... end of rant, I guess :p

As a native speaker, a primary school teacher, and an English teacher, I would assume that you do know English grammar better than most native speakers, if you're anywhere near high B2 to C1 or higher English (high scoring Cambridge First Exam or better). Very few native speakers will be able to tell you what the difference is between "I wrote some books", and "I have written some books", for instance. And they're totally unaware that there's an order that adjectives need to go in to sound right. They just know when it sounds wrong. And that's just the tip of the iceberg.
Native speakers have forgotten all their lessons from primary school. When it comes up in conversations, I often get asked by adults, "What's a preposition?" or "What do you mean by subject verb object?"

There's good reason to not share shampoo and conditioner. People have different types of hair with different needs. Someone with dry hair needs moisturizing products which would not be useful for someone with oily hair.
And interracial couples need to jeep this in mind too. I only just started learning about hair types of peiple with african descent, and that goes into their hairstyles too. Honestly it's an interesting topic, and useful to learn about the issues that people deal with that are so common place that it's never even considered. Even if it's knowledge that I'll never personally use.

The people who brought up selfcare products made me think of something. My parents (dad and stepmom) had the cutest night routine and my and my sister always laughed when we saw them do it. My stepmom did it first by herself, she got her water bottle socks, toothbrush, etc done first. Then she did skincare one for face, one for lips, and one for eye bags. She did this for years before we met her and she became me and my sister primary maternal figure. Well the story goes my dad saw her do this and would ask for her to put it on him. It has become a routine and it it the most adorable thing I have ever seen
