    UPDATE: The starter as of about 6 months is still working perfect, I’ve put it through many cold starts this winter with temps being as low as -30 or lower! Very happy with it and it sure beats the hell out of spending a few hundred dollars on a new starter!

    Took a few years for me to realize that alternators and starters were wearable parts. And most of the time, it's simply bushings in them that have gone bad. Thanks for the reminder!

    Thank you very much!! I have a 2004 cummins 2500 with 208k miles and this guide helped me out!! Starter didn't look original once I pulled it off but I used the same rebuild kit and it worked perfect!! Thanks again dude!!

    Best vid on the subject out there!
    My Starters solenoid engages but sometimes the motor doesn't turn . Do you think this rebuild would take care of that?
    Thanks for taking the time to make this vid.

    great video, thanks for sharing.
    i bought a jeep cherokee and it was just making the clicking noise when i tried to start it. so i pulled the starter tore it apart and cleaned everything with engine degreaser and scotch pads. then sprayed it all off with the garden hose. wiped it off with some shop towels, let it dry out in the sun for about 30 min (it was hot today). then sprayed it all with pb blaster white lithium grease while i reassembled it.... tested it and it spun, stuck it back in the jeep and it worked.
    yeah, $113 saved.
    not sure if this is a long term fix, try at your own risk. i am just glad the jeep actually runs ... :)

      Glad it helped you. It's been about 2 years since this video was made and haven't had a problem yet! Even through all the cold cranking in the North Dakota winters!

    This is a great video. Just so there's no confusion for other 2007 5.9 Cummins owners, this alternator is not the same and the repair kit will not work. As far as I can find, there is no kit available for it. I ended up with a NAPA starter and still debating whether to have the original DENSO rebuilt for a spare.

    Just lost the small metal ball that goes on the spring! This will give me trouble if I just put it back like that?

    So this should work for my starter on my 2000 model Fl70 freightliner? Its a 5.9 Cummins.

      almost all starters are the same on cummins 5.9 between 1994 and 2007 ... you probably figured that out by now :)

    Nice vid. Only thing is the bearings. I'm assuming they are sealed. No amount of grease will help them unless you remove the bearing covers and pack them and reinstall the covers. An easy way to use a sealed bearing as a non sealed for like oil lubed is removal of those seals. It can be done😁

    Great vidio Jake, I was able to braze up the contactors and make them even again it takes a little file work, the brass is a little stronger than the copper, I did this to my 99 that I have owned since new the repair has lasted years, love the truck 170,000 miles.

  • @scottchapman8044

    Knocking out all the junk that comes out when you take it apart is 99 and a half percent of the rebuild. All I ever have to do is take everything apart clean everything up real good shine it up real good put it all back together again it works just fine. I put about two shims maybe three shims in each brush. to make the spring press against the armor sure with a little bit more pressure. And yes I do I custom make the. But the whole rebuild only cost me a little bit of my time I do not have to buy anything. Yea

      I do the same thing to alternaters. Take them apart clean them up. Might buy a bearing and bushing every once and a while. But other than that. I don't spend jack. Me and part stores are mortal enemies. I wouldn't have it any other way!!!!!

    • @scottchapman8044
      @scottchapman8044 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Clean all the crap out of the starter in the alternator and that's what's basically and keeping it from running

    • @scottchapman8044
      @scottchapman8044 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      To loosen them screws out of the starter and alternator you need an impact driver to get them out correctly without stripping them. At least it does make it easier more efficient

    Why does nobody have the felt washer on the pinion gear? My starter had one…

  • @BRWfilms

    So my starter just clicks. I replaced solenoid contacts and plunger. Starter spins over when given power outside the truck but it will not spin over inside the truck when given power just clicks
    If any one can offer any insight I can send photos or videos

    But- Why was it stuck (contacting) ? Spinning on it's own ? How did the contacts cause that ? You didn't show that.

      Sounds like a battery issue to me. see if you have 12v going to the starter, thats where I'd start.

      @@j-bobsgarage7535 hey Jake! Thanks for getting back to me. So eventually I just lost all power after a few days of cranking slow... installed a new starter fired right up. Thanks!

    • @davidtweeddale5775
      @davidtweeddale5775 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If it's slow cranking and your batteries are good, then it's the brushes that are bad.
