    The answer to my question is YES! This rod can cast a 150 gram (5 ozs) far enough to catch fish from most beaches here in the UK. Bill

    Hi Bill. most cheap rods today are worth the money as the rod blanks are usually well made, having said that, its the components like the rod eyes and reel seat that generally are not up to scratch. However, a casual angler could expect 2 or 3 years from such a rod as long as they de-salt it after each use and do not push it beyond its capacity to cast. I have a relatively expensive 13ft rod that cost me £60 and it is every bit as good as my other £250 rod. £100 should get one started out beach fishing these days . Really enjoy your laid back character and presentation, you have whats called charisma, hope your health improves and we can get to see more of your videos, good luck.

      I’ve been using one of my rods that costed me £30 for 6 years now with no problem granted I only beach fish a handful of times a year mostly in the summer months

    Good video Bill. To many tackle tarts about these days.
    All the gear but no idea. Ha.
    Took my partner casting today for the first time, using carp gear.
    A 6 foot 2lb stalker and a 10ft 2.75lb rods. She managed 100 metres with the 10 foot and 40 metres with the 6 footer. She loved it.
    Look forward to more of your videos.

      Tony Napoli Hi to many people believe that you need to spend £400 plus to get a beach rod but these are definately not for beginners! The lesson is you must buy a rod you can bend and that will do the job. For people who just want to go sea fishing now and again you can get a good cheap rod that will cast far enough to catch fish and not leave you with back strain. Bill

    Great video showing tackle tarts that some budget gear is highly capable of getting bigger leads bait in the water at resonable distance.

    • @easyfishing1936
      @easyfishing1936  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      SmokeSolo33 Hi I couldn’t agree more. Now while I have a couple of Zziplex rods, which I love, I also have budget beachcasters that can hit 200 yards without even breaking a sweat. I really annoyed a guy a few years back who had all the gear, pair of matching Zziplex rods and Penn multipliers and my cheap Shakespeare rod and fixed spool reel was achieving far greater distance for a fraction of the cost. Everybody should get some casting tuition because when you can cast well the rod doesn’t matter very much. Bill

    Great content, thanks for posting. Using your tips I have set myself up a basic beach fishing setup for around £150. Lineaffe Rod £35, Sonik 8000 Reel £30, Berkley 18lb mono, greased weasle 60lb shock leader & amnesia 30lb hook link £20-00, imax tripod £35, breakaway tackle & leads + random equipment £30. Now I just need to bait up and add water !

      Rokh &Roll Hi well I hope you get a lot of pleasure from your gear. Your tackle choice sounds ok. I have no experience of that rod tho’ and I would have bought 15 lb line but as long as you fill the reel properly it should be good. Bill

      @@easyfishing1936 I went for 18lb as it has some rough ground where I intend to fish, as for the rod I have no idea either so it will be interesting to see how it fairs. Tight lines and thanks again.

    Bill, that looks like the Bison rod that I bought from Ebay too. What a fantastic rod, caught me some double figure undulate rays on it and loads of other fish. I abused it and it kept going. 2 yrs on and i was left some money and bought some expensive rods. Seriously thinking of buying another Bison.

    • @easyfishing1936
      @easyfishing1936  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Autistic Angler Hi your right it is the Bison brand! It’s cheap but does the job. Ok you are not going to put a bait out 200 yards but only 5% of beach anglers can do that! I have also found a sub £30 rod that is great for doing the “ Brighton Bash” and I will be demonstrating this on video later. Bill

    My Sea fishing trips are not regular so I too bought a £20ish Shakespeare rod and found them to be great for casting and sensitive enough to pick up bites. I buy 3 section rods as they fit in the car easy and won’t get damaged. I have a good reel to match the rod, so this helps a lot.

    • @easyfishing1936
      @easyfishing1936  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi you sound exactly the kind of fisherman I am trying to help. After a lifetime of sea angling I know that cheap rods can certainly catch fish. The reel is probably more important as cheap reels don’t seem to last very well. I would suggest that the Penn Surfmaster are a good buy, with excellent line lay and fairly robust gearing. Stick with fixed spool reels for trouble free casting and fishing, don’t believe people who tell you you must buy a multiplier! With the rod side of things have a look on eBay for some bargains. I bought a Daiwa PKCS for £20 and a monster Penn long distance Neil McKellow rod for £80. New buys I like are the Shakespeare Agility Range, I have a couple which perform really well, about £70. Regards Bill

    Good review Bill - just goes to show it’s really not necessary for the occasional angler to spend a lot of money.
    In any case with the decline of cod stocks, unless fishing big tides/rough ground, or for big hounds, the need for rods capable of casting big 5oz plus leads isn’t great and in most circumstances over flat ground/in calmer waters a cheapish 3lb tc carp rod will suffice for smaller leads - and unlike the “big” rods a carp rod might even bend with the smaller species more likely to be encountered in most instances.

    Nice one Bill,
    For me i feel a quality Reel with a good drag is more important than the Rod.
    Also quality line. Cheap Mono is unreliable.
    Best As Always,
    Steve in Fife.

    • @easyfishing1936
      @easyfishing1936  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Stevie D Hi Steve, can I just ask when have you had a fish strip line of the clutch? I have had shore tope that have gone over 100 yards at full speed in shallow water. Odd bigger smoothounds have taken a bit of nearer the shoreline but generally from the shore the fish we catch don’t tear off. Bigger bass and mullet maybe. Most modern reels have fair clutches. As for cheap lines, well some are better than others, some are more abrasion resistant, some stretch more! But raw beginners just need cheap 15 lb bs, maybe more say 30 over rougher ground, I don’t want to recommend Daiwa tournament or Suffix or similar for beginners I just want to help them get started and catch a few whiting, flatties etc to get them going. Bill

      @@easyfishing1936 Hi Bill,
      Thanks for reply. I meant that on some cheap Reels the drag can be a pain to set as they can be lumpy ie grip/slip . Also i have fished with guys who's Plastic Reel Handles have snapped when trying to retrieve their Rigs through Snags.
      Your points are very valid though as i started with cheap Reels but they gave up within a year. My favourite Reel is a Shimano Exage 4000 FD. A superb strong and corrosion free Reel after 4 years hard use.
      Cheers Bill,
      Stevie.

    I got 2 rod 2 reel and rod rest combo for like £44.99 a couple years back, the reels were £10 Lineaffe reels which are alright but not really that great, replaced with a Daiwa 5500g which was £15 before the price hike up to £40-50, both rods are perfect for beach fishing and can handle large fish but if you're fishing ledges or on a pier you will get problems with bigger fish.
    As for the Rod rest it was some £15 piece of crap lol.

    If you look at 7:11 you can see the rod arch at your full arm extension is nearing 150 degrees before the lead weight was released. When you do this to glass fibre rods they soon give in. Used to work in a shop and we saw this all the time especially when they got much above 11ft.

      dave newsome Hi well I might do that in the future but firstly this rod does not have the best action for pendulum and secondly I think until you can hit a MEASURED 130 plus yards consistently I don’t think the pendulum should be attempted. I see some rubbish and very dangerous casting on the beach from guys who think they can cast. In fact the Brighton type cast can hit over 300 yards with the right tackle. For those disbelievers look at TH-cam for a guy called Jamie Blakemore hitting over 300 yards with an off the ground cast awesome!! Bil

      NI Carper Hi I used to practise on a field often while I was learning to cast. The best advice I can give anyone wishing to improve their casting is to get tuition from a casting instructor. Contact Sea Angler magazine and they will put you on to an instructor in your area and ask to learn the Easy Cast or Brighton cast which are the easiest to learn and can be wound up to hit the 200 yard mark. If you want to move on to the pendulum cast later you can but master the simpler off ground cast first. You don’t have to pendulum cast to hit big distances. Bill

      Easy Fishing Its not relevant to this vid, but was to your float fishing vid. Sorry for confusion. I wanted simply to know, if after shotting a float, it could be anchored to the bottom, say, with an ssg, to stop float drift?

    • @easyfishing1936
      @easyfishing1936  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Paul Mennell Hi well I have not done a float fishing video for a while and I don’t have the time to go thru’ all the comments on all my video’s every day. If possible I try to keep up with people’s questions but unless they come up highlighted thru’ TH-cam I don’t see them on older video’s! Well even if you are not a subscriber I will answer your question, yes you can anchor a float on the bottom with a big shot. It is the essence of the lift method and the driftbeater float. Make sure to undershot the float fish it overdepth and place an extra SSG or whatever near the hook and provided you have a float with a bouyant top you will get either a big lift or the float will disappeare. I wish you luck with getting answers of other TH-cam channels!
