Autumn Garden Jobs & Making The Best Of A Sad Situation 😊

- Such a gorgeous calm Autumnal day in the garden, with beautiful blue skies and warm sunshine, so I thought I’d take the opportunity to get a few garden jobs ticked off my list.
I am planting up my windowbox with Carex ‘Everest’, potting up my Picea Glauca ‘Daisy’s Whites’ (which I will replant into the borders once the first hard frost has taken my annuals and there is more room) and then replanting that container with Carex ‘Evergold’.
I’m also potting up some of my Pelargoniums to see how they do being overwintered in my greenhouse (which is actually more of a coldframe).
My friend Edie has given me a panicle Hydrangea (not sure which variety) so I’m planting that.
And then I’m very sad to report that 3 of the Ilex Stokes planted around my new ombré green pot in Container Garden have died - that is the trouble with a formal design! So I’m moving the remaining 2 over into Fountain Garden. And I’ve replaced the Ilex Stokes with a circle of lavender I have elsewhere in my garden.
So .. a very productive day in the garden today and I hope you enjoy this video!

@@TheEnthusiasticGardener The weather has been quite cold over the last few days. I might try to get some bulbs planted tomorrow . They have been in a box in the basement since September waiting for the cold to set in.

Hello again. Thank your for posting another "enthusiastic" video. We have been away so I missed a couple of your recent shows but now that we are back, you have inspired me to get outside and lift my dahlia tubers. I planted three Cafe au Lait dahlia's where a favourite rose was lost and I needed to fill that space for a late summer party we had. They filled in beautifully and I quite like having them there now. I also have a clematis in a big grey pot (not my favourite pot), that needs to be moved somewhere as it didn't do well where I put it. I really love all the variety in your garden and how everything looks so happy and healthy. If I have the energy, I also might move some Carex like yours (the golden ones) that I planted in a hidden spot under a willow. They are okay back there, but I never really see them. After seeing yours in your window box, and how cute and neat they look, I'm thinking I should bring mine to the front too. Thanks for persevering with this video - it has really put me back into garden/shuffling mode. I hope your fence repair is not too big a problem for you...there's always something isn't there. I think definitely move your carex plants so they’re not hidden, glad to have given you some inspiration. And cafe au Lait dahlias are so beautiful. I might try some next year. The fence has been fixed by good old Rich, and he also pushed back the neighbour’s fence because their bushes are so huge that the branches have pushed the fence over towards our side, I don’t think they realise as they probably can’t see past their bushes and shrubs. Hi Janette, your garden is still looking wonderful with Winter only a month away. The Carexes look great in the window and planter boxes. Did I notice a new little painted friend underneath the window box? Lucky girl to get a 'Lime' hydrangea of whatever kind. I've heard of them but I've never seen one here. I'd love one because they're supposed to be happy in full sun. Nursing my hydrangeas through the heat is a challenge so one that didn't mind the sun would be lovely. Hope the Stokes and the lavenders will be happy in their new homes. I'm not surprised you were worn out. You got so much gardening done as well as helping with the falling fence. Hope that Richard was able to fix the fence without too much difficulty and you both have a good week. Love Bron xx
Hello Bron and thanks for joining me. I must say you have a very keen eye for detail spotting that ornament under my window box. It’s actually a snake I’ve had for years and I had started painting it months ago but I abandoned that project and so it isn’t finished. But I must do that. The limelight is lovely isn’t it? I don’t have much luck with them but I’ll try my best. Pleased with the carexes though and so far the lavender is holding up. Hope you’re having a great week 🩷

Jeanette you make me laugh, in a good way of course. Hope Richard and the fence are okay. The grasses look really good in your window boxes and one of my favourite plants, is a hydrangea. I planted 4 new ones this year, but we are into a bit of winter now , so fingers crossed they all survive. Your yard is looking good still and your geraniums are thriving. Well done, you, for saving the pelargonium. I put mine in the shed every year. They look awful by the spring, but I spruce them up, repot them, and back they come. Love that music you played, what is it. In fact, I've just had hearing aids fitted, so I'm rediscovering sounds, especially since I can get everything via blue tooth and even phone calls. Well, Jeanette, your garden still looks lovely, and I love those grasses. Hope Richard and the fence are OK. Take care throughout the next storm. 🙋♀️

@TheEnthusiasticGardener my goodness, tell her not to hesitate. They're not those big old things they used to be, at least not over here. They're invisible and connected, and they make such a difference to the quality of life. Being able to hear the smallest of things, even tea pouring into a cup, leaves rustling in the trees, bees, and of course, conversations become easy again, listening to music no longer distorted. It's just great, and isolating yourself is no longer an option. She'll find her youth again 😃

You look like super woman you’re going so fast! Your garden is still beautiful. I keep forgetting to tell you that pine trees lose their needles every three years, they shed them. You can brush off the old needles but don’t panic, they are still alive.

I think the carexes look just lovely in both containers. Good luck with them. The pelagoriums do well in my sun room over winter. They even flower many times. I think they are cheerful and easy care so I love to keep some inside.

Hi Janette, I so enjoy watching your videos 😊 The garden is looking good! I like moving plants around too until you find that perfect spot for them. Several of mine have had to be moved in the last few weeks so I’ve kept my husband Terry really busy in between all the rainy days of which we’ve had so many. Although Terry isn’t into gardening, he has done so much while I’m not mobile (need 2 new knees!). I can still enjoy looking at it though. 🏴

You're amazing the way that you come up with new content every week. Your garden is looking very nice at the moment Janette. Mine is soaking wet after all the rain but I've finally got all my bulbs planted in pots. I must not buy so many next year. It's too easy to sit down with the catalogues and put a tick against the items! Have a great week.

The Carex are perfect for the boxes… I drool over your greenhouse. I gave my pelargoniums to a friend who had fantastic soace to allow them winter blooms. Your color choice of sweater is gorgeous on you! You always look so healthy even after such a productive day! Well done !!

Busy Bee Janette, 🐝 The nandina looks fabulous you showed it on a previous video, but it is so happy and healthy in your garden. I think you should invest in more. In the wide angle shot towards the end of the video, it looks great flanked either side by 2 yellowish shrubs. You have a good design eye, I try to emulate your style. Thanks for sharing, bfn. 🐞🌻🌱

Thank you for your lovely comments, I just try to follow the design of having a green, blue, red and yellow foliage plants grouped together and also different textured leaves together and it seems to look nice. A very successful day I would say! Despite the fence emergency! Pelargoniums should overwinter ok, I have done them in the past. You could always drape a bit of fleece if temperatures are forecast rather brutal. The begonias are certainly still going strong! It all looks lovely!

I should practice piano tonight too, I’ve been practicing every day!! On week 8, it’s very difficult 😆 schools don’t teach cursive any more, at least not to my knowledge. It’s a shame because it’s so lovely to have beautiful handwriting, we used to do it when I was at school. I used to have nicer handwriting but then I learned shorthand at college about 45 years ago now and because I could then write really quickly with shorthand my real writing got messier 😆😆

I have always wanted to learn cursive , they didn’t teach it anymore when I went to school, I think it looks professional when you write cursive, I hope I can mastered what I’m learning 😊. I do love challenge, I been over 10 days practicing now , it might take me awhile but I will get it .

Good Morning, so nice to see you and your lovely garden. The Carex look quite happy in their new homes; I love the movement they produce when the breeze blows. I had never been a fan of pelargoniums until I saw your variegated ones. I am totally in love with the ones on the lower right at 10:30, with the soft coral blooms. Do I recall that you grew those from seed? I’d love to know the variety. I’ve seen some videos in which gardeners remove all the soil from their geraniums, as we call them, then place them in cardboard boxes to store over winter! Seems impossible but apparently works. I do hope your lavender survives in its new space. Those purple blooms in front of the green pot will be quite a sight. We finally got some much needed rain (about 1”, 2.5cm) and with it came the cold 🥶. Freezing temps last night and a slim chance of snow flurries for Halloween 👻 🎃

I didn’t grow any from seed though, but I think I’ll try next year because everyone says they are so easy to germinate and grow so quickly. I must order some seeds now while I think of it and that will be a good project to try. Sounds cold where you are, it’s still quite mild here but very wet. Clocks changed last weekend so it’s dark when i get home from work. Soon be time for leaf clearing and bulb planting - my two least favourite garden jobs 😆 hope you’re having a great week ❤️💚🩷

Hi Janette, your garden still looks good. If your pelagoniums
( Don't know if I spelled it right) start to suffer from the cold you can just bring them into your garage ( if Richard allows it ) and give them a little water every couple weeks and they'll be just fine. It's been a weird gardening year here. My neighbor's lilac is reblooming right now ( only a couple flowers ) they usually only bloom once around early May, yet mine has lost all it's leaves already. It usually holds it's leaves until late December/ early January. My screaming neon rose has decided to put out a few new blooms. It's usually done flowering by the start of September. We had our first freeze this morning it was 24° F
I'm going to pick up some crocus and daffodil bulbs this weekend, so something to look forward to.

Hi Janette! Wonderful to see your garden - you grow the most amazing pelargoniums! Sorry about your ilex shurbs.... the good news is, the blue star juniper shrubs you have there will fill in to about 3-4 feet wide so they will cover that area nicely. The lavender you will eventually have to move (I think), but right now it looks to be an excellent solution!

🫶Janette you should try planting garlic,🧄 you would be great at it. Yes it’s all planted, what a way to spend time off😂😂😂, it was alot more time consuming than I thought because when I mail ordered the garlic bulbs they were divided, so I had to carefully separate each bulb. I’m trying 4 types, an elephant, a Cuban, an Italian and a German red. 2 soft neck and 2 hard neck. I’m just hoping I didn’t plant them too close together because with each order there were 4 bulbs and when separated it’s a lot and I only have 2 raised beds so I used a few containers 😂. I hope your fence it’s ok now I forgot to mention that, but with Richard on the case I’m sure it’s fine now. We both need a long gardening rest 😝. I need to now concentrate on my indoor houseplants and give you a tour. It needs done TLC first🥰🫶. Enjoy the rest of your spooky day 😆👻.

The hydrangea is beautiful! I want a limelight. I've got a normal hydrangea in clay soil. I want a blue one so I'll take a cutting in spring and plant it in some ericaceous soil in a pot.

@TheEnthusiasticGardener what I have learnt about gardening in the 5 years since I bought my first house is that the plant has to be happy in the conditions it is in. So if I want a plant that wouldn't tolerate my heavy clay soil I put it in a pot so I can give it the specific conditions it likes. I can move them and overwinter them too!

The fence situation sounds like a pain, sorry that happened. Do you watch Jes on here, last autumn she lifted her geraniums, cleaned the roots and put them upside down in paper bags. I think she maybe misted the roots and close them up. It worked like a charm, a subscriber suggested it, she just stored them in her basement. I only have one in a pot, I just bring it in, my bathroom gets southern light, so I sit it where the sun shines on it. I've even had it bloom in late winter.

I hope the plants you potted up survive the winter--I think they will in the greenhouse, plus your winters are fairly mild, aren't they? I wish I had a greenhouse. We had our first snow two days ago, but I still have things blooming, like roses. Have to dig out the dahlia tubers though. Weather should be warming up a little in the next days. We are all sad that gardening season is almost over, at least for those of us who live in cold climates, boo-hoo!

Hi Janette, I love the Carex grasses. What a bargain. I bought some back in the summer in small 9cm pots, because of moving house I am only just getting round to planting them out. Some of them only just about look alive, 😢 but yours are great. 😊 I might see if I can find a bargain too! Wonder why the plants round the green container died 🤔. Hope the fence falling down in the front garden didn't damage the 'Easter Island' head. 😮

Purple head is unscathed 😆😆 I think it’s invincible 😆 it was the fence the other side of my little shed, and then also the neighbour’s fence keeps heaving over to our side because all their bushes have grown so big they are pushing the fence. I don’t think the neighbours realise. Anyway, Rich has pushed it all back again. Hope you’re having a great time in your new house ❤️💚🩷
