Mate I am extremely grateful for everything you do. I’ve learned sooo much from you. I’m an automotive engineer who loves DIY projects. Following hundreds of tips and tricks from yourself I’ve managed to successfully plaster 3 ceilings, 1 bedroom, and recently a garden room/office space. I have to be honest, plastering must be one of the most stressful diy jobs I’ve done, as a beginner you are working against the clock all the time, it’s very messy especially the first few ceilings, it’s hard work the ceilings, in particular. I’ve made many mistakes and I have two long cracks in a ceiling yet I’m very proud of the work. As a DIY-er, the fear of failure is paralysing. I would rather make a few mistakes and learn along the way, instead of not even trying. Thank you so much for everything Kirk. May your heart be blessed!
I find your videos really interesting. I tried plastering on my own after doing a fast track course and quickly realised it's not a trade you can pick up in a month😂 I tried but it wasn't for me as I struggled with timing but much respect to plasterers out there, it's a really skilled trade
Before I became a plasterer, I thought I could just pick up a trowel and go, big mistake mate 😂💯 Definitely a trade that takes time and dedication to become top notch. Resoect
@AA-re9fk it will be a mission taking off the skim already applied. If it ain't that bad, just put a really thin coat over the top. If it is really bad, try & hack it off without damaging the hard plaster beneath it...... if it does get damaged where you can see the brick, you can practice some patching skills . If you chose to go back to brick, practice how to apply plasterboard witg some drywall adhesive ensuring you PVA the walls first
Another mint video Kirk, interesting and funny as always. Ive been plastering some yrs but every day is a school day. Thanks for the tips and entertainment. 👍
I'm a new plasterer and watch your videos to get better and pick things up. Always gotta keep learning. There very educational. Well in mate and thank you

When I plastered back in the early 80' s with a ceiling, we used to put a scaffold right across the room with boards it made it a lot easier with your spot board up with you plus if you did drop anything it kept it off the floor.
As a decorator I’d love to follow on after your work . Most skilled educational and cleanest plaster I’ve seen . I bet there was more crumbs from your cookie than plaster on the floor 😂

Rare earth magnet finds joists quickly. Keep giving mine away to electricians . Ha. I pack the gap behind the board over joists with a 8mm hole and foam before screwing. Use fast set foam then screw. Get on and skim. Can't always pull the board back tight enough to stop movement in old made up joist. , but foam fixes by packing gaps. Interesting video and great work again.

I'll not lie and I'm not being rude never really been bothered about plastering I'm an engineer mate but u are infectious what a top bloke think I've binged about 15 videos since yesterday lol
Previous plasterer was probably not very experienced and made some basic errors. This is why it's worth paying a bit more and getting someone who really knows what they are doing and get the job done right first time. I have seen many plastering jobs like that unfortunately and it tends to look ok until the paint goes on then you see all the unevenness, lines and scars.
How many times can you skim a ceiling, like that one your doing I'm guessing has at least six coats of skim, the initial two, then the last guy who had a few problems and now your doing another two, how many can a ceiling take?
You can go on it as soon as its tacky but its also fine to go on it the next day when it's completely dry. It completely kills suction if you leave it to cure for more that 12 hours so great if you skimming over carlite finish or bone dry sand and cement
Pretty sure this hasn’t been asked or nobody else has picked up on this but you say the previous plasterer probably struggled with the high suction background .. but then you mentioned there’s plaster boards underneath? Wouldn’t plaster boards eliminate any high suction from the background ?…..
@onthetrowel I used masking tape on a ceiling I skimmed over the weekend. Mainly because I'm only a DIYer and no way as clean as you. I forgot to leave a gap and found out the hard way when trying to remove it LOL
I had the skrim come down on me years back when I was a lad. We call it zip lining lol😅. My mates still laugh when they picture me completely covered in skim and tape. Huge dormer room it was aswell, bloody nightmare to sort out
Nice neat job Kirk I know the plastering before wasn’t that good but I think a good decorator would’ve pulled it out with easy fill and micro scrim on the joints so I feel some of the blame could go to the decorator
Dont know about that. A bag of easy fill screws and scrim, sand down fill again probably and still wouldnt of been perfect. Just skim it 3 hours job done perfect..
Why should the decorator get the blame , there job was to paint a new plastered ceiling , not to put right a load of crap without getting paid . Plasterer should have been called back to correct the mess they made in the 1st place .!!
Been a painter & decorator since 1983 and it never ceases to make me laugh when people say the decorator will sort that. Just because we are a finishing trade doesn't mean that we should put other trades shit work right. When we go out to price the job it's usually before any work has been done. So when they tell you it's going to be skimmed, new skirts, etc, you price assuming the work will be by competent people. The reality is more often than not the standard is as in this video and worse. We don't price for easifil and tape prior to painting a newly skimmed ceiling or walls.
Great video as always Kirk 👍 diet no dad bod is in pal 😂 I’m interested in the coaching course off on the sick just waiting for a operation but once I’m back on my feet I’ll join up 👍

As always captin crackin content where is the wild 1 today after the heavy breathing i was waiting for what you wearing lol welcome abroad sam m8
During my apprenticeship in the 70s if you skimmed anything that tightened up before the 2nd coat you would get a slap😂
A good decorator could fix it but it really isn’t his job. And it’s debatable if the client would want to pay the extra for the making good
Why should the decorator get the blame , there job was to paint a new plastered ceiling , not to put right a load of crap without getting paid .
Plasterer should have been called back to correct the mess they made in the 1st place .!!
Not cost-effective mate, and the end result wouldn't be better than a re-skim.
Great video as always Kirk 👍 diet no dad bod is in pal 😂 I’m interested in the coaching course off on the sick just waiting for a operation but once I’m back on my feet I’ll join up 👍
Just big boned buddy 😆😆😆 lovely job fella.
