  • PART 19 of this New Series. This is the next episode where I attempt to MIG weld a new rear wheel arch into the Rolls Royce Silver Spirit. I have NEVER attempted to do a wheel arch before. This is split over 2 parts, part 19 on this video and part 18 here • 1st Time DIY Welding a... You have to watch PART 18 first to understand what is going on in PART 19.
    My biggest challenge yet! Can I FIX a 1988 Rolls Royce Silver Spirit with too many faults to list, there is more wrong with it than right. Will I end up crying into my Connolly leather seats or will this beast live on.
    This is the cheapest Rolls Royce in the UK so I wasn't expecting much, hopefully bit by bit with sheer determination and zero skill I will attempt to fix each fault one by one.
    This is PART 19 of this series. Every part will be filmed, and I hope to discover the craftmanship that has gone into this 34 year old moving piece of art.
    Merch is here!!!!! www.puddlt.com...

    Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series. Many thanks, Vince.

    Model makers Tip for painting with a spray can: put the can in some luke warm water and let the can get luke warm before you start spraying. The paint will come out better and more consistent.

    Let me share a little revelation:
    I've been watching your channel for several years now, somewhere between the Mr Telephone and my mate Vince transition.
    When you started doing your "try to fix" videos I enjoyed those a lot, your engagement with your audience and the way you share your thought process it made me feel as if we were doing the stuff together, at first I thought that the enticing part was to see how you never gave up and even did several revisits, but lately I realized that the best part of the channel and your videos is the fact that you are learning bit by bit along the way, both from the community and from your experiences.
    That's it, that's my revelation, we are learning a lot with this car and I'm enjoying the trip all the way through.

    Ps. A quick tip for your finnish inside the wedge of your wheel arch where the panel is welder. I pesonally use seam sealer for the nice insulation of the panel overlap inside to prefent dirt and water comming true the 2 layers. It also gives you a nice finnish for water to drop very nicely and to prefent dirt from clogging up the whole inside of the wedge.

      " пожалуйста " is one of the strange words , it can mean "Please " or "You are welcome " , a useful word to know " это " is another quirky word that covers " this is , , that is , it is " etc . Lots more like that .
      If you know the "Bald and Bankrupt " channel you will have seen him speaking Russian very fluently, he had a Belarusian wife ( maybe the reason he went bankrupt 😄. He talked about it once and said forget about the grammar , just learn the words and pronunciation .

      @@UserUser-ww2nj staying relaxed is a good idea too as it can get very frustrating at times! Yes some words have more than one meaning depending on context, but I suppose the understanding comes with time and experience. I've watched that Bald & Bankrupt video myself several times and it gave me hope that I might one day be able to speak as fluently as he does, but that's still a LONG way off! Even just learning the vocabulary is hard sometimes never mind learning the grammar as well! As for the pronunciation, you're right, you have to train your mouth to make different shapes and sounds when speaking. Whenever I say a word or phrase in my head it sounds great, but sometimes if I try to say it out loud it sounds awful! Luckily there's lots of help online, and in particular on TH-cam from the likes of Daria (Real Russian Club) and Fedor (Be Fluent In Russian). Maybe you'll change your mind and start learning again. Think of the pride and satisfaction if you learn to speak it! Хорошего дня 🙂

    Great work Vince, to get the texture you are looking for with the stone chip we use a Schutz gun which you screw cans of stone chip onto.
    This is much much thicker than the stone chip you get in a spray can which gives you that thick texture and protection. Also the nozzle on the gun is very large which sort of throws the stone chip at the surface in thick blobs instead of a fine spray.
    I would have blocked up the back door a little more as overspray gets everywhere and is a right pain to remove.
    I would also be careful when grinding and welding around glass as the molten metal debris created will embed itself into glass, I would hate to see this happen to your expensive camera lens as it cannot be repaired.
    When spraying think of mowing stripes into a lawn, you make methodical passes from left to right giving yourself a 50% overlap between passes, this ensures even coverage without runs.
    Some spray cans are crap unfortunately, I prefer U-Pol as they pressurise their cans to much higher pressures which lets you get all the paint out of the can and a consistent finish.
    You can get nozzles for spray cans with a wide fan spray pattern, I much prefer these nozzles over that standard nozzles that are more of a cone spray pattern as they put a more fine even coat down mimicking a real spray gun.
    I know the primer gave you an idea of where you needed to fill or sand more but until you get something that gives you a reflection on there like lacquer you wont truly know if you have filled or sanded enough.
    Spraying a light guide coat of black paint over the filler and then lightly sanding the guide coat away will at first remove all the high spots but what will be left is the low spots and these will still have paint in them from the guide coat, this makes at really easy to spot where the low spots are.
    To make it easier to blend in when spraying instead on just applying making tape flat to the panel try curling the masking tape in half length ways by curling it back on itself into a horse shoe shape. This gives you a soft curved edge to spray up to, which gives you a very soft line that fades into the original paint instead in a sharp crisp line that leave you a ridge when you peel the tape off. Much less rubbing down required.

    Great job Vince! I can relate to this video. My alloy wheels were powdercoated by the previous owner but they look terrible now as the powder coat has come off where the wheels have corroded. Been doing it the hard way, sanding it off by hand and painting. Its a nightmare job 2 days for one wheel. I am on my second wheel and I think I have lost my finger prints and nails on my right hand lol.
    Things to try with dodgy spray cans, put them in a bowl of hot water for 10 minutes before spraying, should increase the pressure in the can. Also put a little thinners in the paint cap, take off the nozzle and drop it in the thinners for half hour and blow it out with an air line, should be good to go.
    You probably had a nightmare using the filler. Its much harder if you work outside on a warm day, the filler will go off too quickly and you won't have enough working time to smooth it properly. Try and keep the sun off the filler if you have to work outside reduce the amount of hardener and ideally put it on when its cooler, much easier mate.😀

    I was sorry to hear you had some haters on your videos on the Rolls-Royce, your videos are what they are and I enjoy the learning process with you, please don't ever change!
    I must admit when I first saw the Rolls videos I thought you'd taken far to much on and no way would it be possible to complete this project, especially when you started by doing little "easy" bits like the windows and horns etc. The further you've gone on and now your onto welding the car I have real faith in you completing the car! It was really great to see the filling and sanding come through to a good standard.
    You'll never be able to achieve the same underbody sealant crinkle effect without a compressor, nearest you'll get is a product called "gravi-guard".
    My only other suggestion, which I'm sure you've heard before, is to get a better socket set (a massive set from Halfords would be money well spent), I cringe and wait for the day you snap a bolt every time I see you using the 1/2 inch ratchet on something small!

    Just as you said it Vince I was thinking that there are an awful lot of welds there just for the wheel arch, but at least it won't fall off and the MOT is assured, as to the wheel arch anyway. I congratulate you on considering your dads neighbours and the grinding noise I don't think there are many as considerate as you its very good of you. As to it looking nice, when I did this on my car it looked absolutely awful, but guys train for years to do this stuff, and bring all that experience to the table when they repair a car. Don't let it get you down Vince you can only do your best and it looks fine to me. Don't forget what you keep telling us, your not making a HOW TOO video, just doing it as best you can, it is an incredibly hard job filling metal and smoothing it out so the lines match. Keep up your spirits Vince it looks ok to me, thinking back on my efforts I'm glad your doing this and not me, it's so difficult.

    Hi Vince.
    It's not a bad job in the wheelarch.
    A good bodyshop can pull the filling and painting around to make the arch look as good as new.
    The thing is its a metal repair and not filler over rust and will last significantly longer than a quick repair.
    You've done nothing wrong.
    Some of the procedures could have been done differently, but the end result is much better than a fibreglass and filler repair.
    For a repair done on your drive, it's very well done👍

    Definitely a safety overheating thingy on many welders but more realistic it is dusty to weld and electronics don't like dust.
    I have been taught to spray as soon as it cools down because rust pores start minutes after it cools down.

    Tip for painting, when spraying spray in short even sprays from left to right. Don’t constantly hold as it will mess the spray pattern up. Tip for the filler, instead of adding on top of the filler once it’s smooth sand it back with a high grit 120 then 300 then filler primer and paint

    Vince , a light guide coat of Black over the filler, then sand , this will show all of the low spots

    Hey Vince great job as always...I hav found that paint is a great filler...that's easy to say wen ur not buyin the paint but wet sand that paint bck and put another coat on...repeat if u feel like it...that said if it goin full paint job then let the pro's do what they do best but for smaller panels/projects then I found it works a treat....I don't know any1 who has found a short cut for a top job paint jobs will always take time...keep up the good work as ur progressing well

    You're doing really well for someone with no experience in body work dude. One piece of advice re the painting, you want long even strokes. Not shake up and down and all over. Watch a video by the gunman. It'll really help with how it lays and also you'll find that it's more consistent.
    I am truely loving this series mate. You're a brave brave man. Hat's off to you.

    Pretty fine job you have done IMO. Rattle cans should be placed in hot water for about 5-10 minutes or something which should solve the uneven flow. I rattle can my airsoft realistic imitation firearms. I actually think you should spray the car yourself. It will never be concourse acceptable even if you spend £5k on a paint job so might as well just buy 20 rattle cans

    • @stoatin3050
      @stoatin3050 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If he could reverse that without significant expense then I would agree. £5k on a paint job? Is that what it would cost?

    • @DEmma1972
      @DEmma1972 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stoatin3050 A basic spray could be as little as £700 but that is no prep. All trims will have to be removed. Metallic paint will cost more than a flat paint. Prep work will add cost. Its a big car so again that will add cost. Minimum price of a paint job on that car must be £3k but it wont look good. (just IMO)

    • @stoatin3050
      @stoatin3050 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just like Vince I learn every day. I never imagined it could cost that much. I don't know what is involved in a car respray. The beauty of Vince's TH-cam channel is we get to know stuff, even if just out of curiosity. lll look after my Skoda better now! And my Xbox.

    Hi Vince, spray a light spray of black over your primer as a guide coat when you block sand it back your lows appear

  • @azmoz1321
    @azmoz1321 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Vince
    Another enjoyable video :-)
    Old hobby set welders are a nightmare , they are made on a tight budget so parts are cheap and plastic and wear more than professional sets ( the Lincoln Bester is a lovely small set sold by Rapid Weld here in the U.K. ) still that said the finished result looked very good ,that might be why they say never buy a used car in the wet lol :-).
    Paint finish is only as good as the prep and your fill sand fill sand method is the way to go reducing the imperfections with each pass.
    I know you said the paint was just to tidy it up a bit you can get very passable results from rattle cans and for a good finish it would be best to spray the entire panel and mask a smaller area for the primer then feather the edges to get rid of any step when you top coat and lacquer .
    Keep the videos coming Vince :-)

    Bodywork always looks worse before it starts to get better, preparation is key, but then slow steady work on the rubbing down is mind-numbing, you just have to think of wonderful things, not rush and keep working away. It appears, that you arrived there in the end, so take heart, relax and allow the work to flow through to the conclusion.

    Hi Vince, I’m really enjoying your Rolls Royce series. You’re doing a great job on each video and it’s exciting to see the before and after, on each of your jobs. Keep the videos coming and give yourself a pat on the back. Hopefully in a year or so time, I’ll see your at a Rolls Royce fair / rally, showing off your pride and joy. Otherwise I’ll look out for you taking a bride to her wedding on a Saturday afternoon.
