Rolls Royce Silver Spirit Restoration PART 24 - Radio Install

  • PART 24 of this New Series. In this episode I continue on with the RADIO install. It should have been straightforward but the wiring from the Rolls radio that I purchased on eBay is different to the wiring harness on the car. So, I have to work out what each wire does.
My biggest challenge yet! Can I FIX a 1988 Rolls Royce Silver Spirit with too many faults to list, there is more wrong with it than right. Will I end up crying into my Connolly leather seats or will this beast live on.
This is the cheapest Rolls Royce in the UK so I wasn't expecting much, hopefully bit by bit with sheer determination and zero skill I will attempt to fix each fault one by one.
This is PART 24 of this series. Every part will be filmed, and I hope to discover the craftmanship that has gone into this 34 year old moving piece of art.
    Merch is here!!!!! www.puddlt.com...

Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series. Many thanks, Vince.

Great stuff Vince, the yellow mat voice over comments had me laughing.
You will notice that in automotive applications connections are not soldered and always use stranded wire, this is due to the vibration created when the vehicle is travelling down the road.
This falls under the category of NVH (Noise, Vibration & Harshness), solder whilst creating a solid connection is also its biggest weakness in that it is solid. It does not flex much before it breaks.
This is why the use of multi pin connectors (super seal connectors are very common) is prolific in the automotive sector, it not only allows movement in the joint but also allows the join to be sealed from water ingress whilst also incorporating a locking feature to ensure the connection cannot accidentally come loose from vibration or other factors.
This also aids assembly as when workers connect the plugs together they give a positive click to tell you they are connected correctly and many if not connected correctly will disconnect altogether ejecting the male and female parts away from one another making are nearly impossible to miss a connector not connected correctly.
I am sure the soldering here will cause you no issues but its something to bare in mind when splicing wires on vehicles in the future, as you probably already know when you solder a stranded wire the solder tends to wick down the wire turning it into a solid wire which creates a possible failure point as it is no longer flexible.

Thanks MM. That is so very true and makes complete sense now. I thought I was doing better job, but I didn't think about the vibrations. I'd like to pin this comment if you are cool with that. No worries if you rather I didn't, it's just more people need to read your stuff as I think there is so much value in what you write. Pinning means it is the first comment under the video. If you could let me know either way 👍👍👌

@@Mymatevince I have no issue with it being pinned Vince, quite flattered in fact.
I don't think you will have any issues with your repair and after all its only the radio and not something safety critical.
Great to see you got it all worked out as installing a radio after an after market one has been installed like in your case can leave you with a right job on your hands. Many just cut the original wiring harness and use bullet connectors like in your case as its cheap.
You can get what are called ISO wiring harness adapters for after market radios that allow you to use the connectors on the original wiring harness instead of cutting them off.
I much prefer these as you do not damage to the original wiring harness which means it can be returned back to its original state if you want to reinstall the original radio or fault find and remove the after market radio easily to be able to isolate it.
      Glad I could help.

Soldered joints also have a slightly higher resistance than a solidly made crimp.
While uncommon, an high load on a heavy gauge wire that has a poor solder joint causing high resistance can de solder itself from the heat but a crimped connection which is suffering high resistance will generally just get very hot.

    • @jamesatkinson6480
      @jamesatkinson6480 ปีที่แล้ว

This is much an issue of contention. I have repaired car radios where the 'pins' from the plug/socket connections soldered to its main printed board have fractured at the solder joint, occasionally in process of the plug assembly. I see it as quite feasible to use the soldering of wire with heat shrink covers to maintain the use of the original plug configuration so reference to an original service manual (if such a thing exists) can help for a prompt repair. As well, I remember replacing a section of insulated wire which caused a dim low-beam headlight. The cause of that was the increase of resistance from the 'feed' connection to the (H4 halogen) globe socket; it measured nearly 4 volts. I used 15cm. of 10A hook-up wire with an Aluminium joiner crimp one side, and a crimp, then solder to the spade lug, then locked in to the globe socket, and Bob's your aunty...!

Back when I used to install car stereos, the trick I used to test which wires went to which speaker was to simply grab a AA battery and touch two of the same color wires to the positive and negative end. The speaker would give off a little popping static noise and you then knew which speaker those wires went to.

It's great to see you 'work it out' with radio operation and the amplifier. Many radios have a high powered BTL (balanced tranformerless) output to the speakers, where the output terminals to each speaker measures (with radio on) about half the DC supply voltage, but the - connection gives the reverse output signal to the + connection, thereby increasing power output (compared to a 'grounded' speaker configuration) by a factor of 4. It also has very low noise. The configuration using an amplifier also increases the output power to the low impedance speakers (typically 4 ohms) by having an internal DC - DC power supply (up to 24 volts) for its output stage. While many viewers may laugh at you, with your embarrassment, I think the 'learning curve' is just great, and well worth presenting for the benefit of others who want to learn (like you have) too, with a gratifying, productive result...

I to remember the good old days of radios that just connected to the speakers through an external amp or internal. None of the wiring to the steering wheel for volumes and mode and phone connect, not that I don't appreciate it, I love all the gadgets on the steering wheel it just makes it harder to fit a non oem radio. But yes I even had extra long leads on my multimeter so I could connect the dash leads to the speakers all around the car but wiring the external amp makes it much more difficult. I think I am as happy for you as much as you are in completing this onerous task, its just so good when you can look back on your work and be proud you fixed it yourself. Another wonderful Rolls Royce video Vince, I love watching all your videos sometimes several times, mainly because old age as turned my brain to forgetful mush. I think I enjoy all your videos even the second time around, but I especially like the Rolls and the boat trims you fixed. One last note I love the yellow mat, but unfortunately it doesn't film well much too bright, but yes I'd like yellow to, just for the difference and the heck of it in Australia they are twice the cost of a blue or grey one.

Great video Vince, yeah car radios can be daughnting to start with, but once you illiminate the speaker wires, then connecting the rest is so much more simpler, and due to having mostly common coloured wires once you done one, then while you might not love doing it, it is a whole lot easier.
with the car radio earth is meant for the car body for power unless the car is reversed polarity ie. red is bodywork, and black being sent through wires extremely rare though, but should always be checked just encase if working on a brand new vehicle, ie one you never worked on before even if same make and model, but the year is different. floating earth like speakers is to the floating earth (return same colour but with a stripe) wire of the speakers on the radio.
and yeah 2 splices in the wire creates more chance of failure compared to 1 splice. ideally you would want 0 splices in the wire, but doing that with a car radio is nearly impossible without the right connector blocks without spending a bomb especially with steering wheel controls as well. without the outer surround on the speakers the speakers will work, just not give as much bass sound for the radio.

If you ever want to adapt another amplifier, headunit or add an aux-in, you just need to figure out the pin-out of the DIN connector, buy a DIN plug, solder on the appropriate wires and connectors and done.

On a car audio amplifier the high level input is usually for connecting the speaker outputs of the radio directly to the amplifier. It is done when you dont have a "low level" (line level) output on the radio.
So my guess is that the original radio had the speaker outputs going into the high level inputs of the amplifier that probably has more power then one built into the radio.

I think the reason the wiring is a mess is because it’s had a modern stereo put in it, and I think modern units probably have the amp integrated into the head unit so the Rolls amp has been bypassed and the outputs just sent to the speakers, that’s my theory anyway

    • @Ragnar8504

You have get many good comment already about low and high level. You now know that din is pre-RCA, but 5-pin is with 4 channel + and common -. Those "old days" was some radio without amplifier and i believe you multi pin din is used for that kind of radio. The radio was installed speaker output, but those wasn't work without amplifier. Din plug has input and output of all 4 channel. It could be possible to connect 5-pin din cable between those equipment and connect speakers straight to the amplifier like you do. And if you wanted to update your stereo, you shoul buy rca-din adapter or diy. And don't connect amplifier negative cable to that bolt permanently if you don't bolt it in to the body.

If there is no dedicated Remote/Amp wire then you usually have to splice the Power Ant. wire to the amps remote connection to power it up. I have a bit of experience with car audio asI did competitive car audio for a while which is why I’m called The Defpom… I had a competition car which was one of the top cars in the country for sound quality.

    • @TheDefpom
      @TheDefpom ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@BenCos2018 My little car sounded really good, to get good clean sound without distortion at a range of volume levels you need a bit of headroom in the system, it could play music at 136dB before the point of noticable distortion, you didn't even appreciate how loud it was as it was so clean, you only noticed when you tried to talk with someone and realised you couldn't hear yourself or them, normally you associate distortion with volume.
I miss that old setup, it had perfect imaging, staging, dynamic range, frequency response, I spent thousands of hours building and tuning the system.
So yeah, thats where the name comes from, LOL.
