I just bought a D4 with 75k clicks for $1G. I haven’t received it yet but it comes with everything, box, manuals, etc. It looks immaculate in the photos and was the lowest mileage D4 I could find currently. I may have over paid but I’m still stoked for it.
I shot the DF for a couple of years so I’m no stranger to the 16mp Nikon sensor. I’ve also had the d810 and d500 combo. That 16mp sensor creates magic.
I feel or at least see as technology advances it’s almost as the photos are getting a clinical look to them. Too sharp, to clean, no magic. Just my opinion.
Mirrorless, no thanks. I need that tactile feel of the mirror slapping, the beautiful sound of it, and the overall mechanical sense of a Dslr.

Just got a D4s for £300. Fast, accurate, sharp and clean images of moving subjects. With 46Mp not everything would be in perfect focus anyway.

I still use mostly my D3 and D700 I used for shooting weddings, model portfolios and events. 12 megs are plenty. Before Nikon introduced the D300, I shot posters with a 4.1 meg Olympus E-10 and got very good images. It’s hard to believe that some are still locked into the phoney megapixel race of a while ago. I do have a D800 and D750 for when higher meg ratings are required, but as Mr. Apohasis says, the high dynamic range and active D lighting of the pro cameras is astounding. For sports, try the 3D focus tracking.

    • @benkleschinsky
      @benkleschinsky 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

That's right. Phoney megapixel race is the exact word I would use. As you try to fit more megapixels onto a sensor you shrink the size of the pixels, color information, dynamic range. Smaller megapixel sensors have larger pixels. It's the reason why a 50mp medium format digital camera blows the socks off something like a D850. However the much older DSLRS with lower megapixel count have incredible color contrast like the D4/D3, D700, D300. Nikon once knew what they are doing. They are now just chasing the latest and greatest consumer whores.

Based on your reviews, I picked up a D4 with 5,847 shutter activations for $1,100 US (thing looks brand new). First time out, was a night shoot at a Halloween festival and the pics turned out amazing even at 12800 ISO! Rock solid performance even with my limited photography skill set and glad I took the plunge.

Well said. Older cameras are still incredible. I've had a couple of people ask me why I haven't upgraded my D800. I'm like why? It works perfectly for what I use it for, portraits and landscapes. I guess they think that just because it's getting older, it can no longer take good pictures? I'm like, have you seen the pictures a D800 takes? Can you EVER imagine a time when that won't be good enough? No, the answer is no you cannot. I'll use it until it dies.

Still use my D800, it works like a champ! I also use my Nikon D3 for everything except landscape and weddings. Even my D3 with less than 10k shutter actuations is a performer at 12 mp. It is great for portraits a little larger than 8x10 and perfect for most smaller stuff that’s going to be used on social media. Megapixels are great but they are not everything unless your looking at less than 10 megapixels.

After owning the 850 for a year now I don't feel like it's blown my socks off. I think the requirement for incredible glass makes it hard to get the best out of the d850. I would love a D4 to pair up with it, i think the 1000 iso shots on D4 look better 64 iso on d850 😂

I was fighting the idea of passing on the D3s and buying a D4. But after watching this video a few times and a few other reviews, I have to concede that the D4 seems to fit me more than d D3s. Besides the cost to go to the D4 vs the D3s no days is around $300. So it is a no brainer to me currently.

I own two D4s. I have printed 20"x30" sized poster prints from photos shot with these cameras. There are no pixels visible in these huge enlargements! Those complaining about the D4s supposedly wimpy 16 megapixels have no idea what they are talking about!
16 megapixels to make pixelless 20"x30" prints. How big of a print do you need?

I'm in the market for a D4. I have a D500 and a D850 so I really don't need a D4, I just want one. I did as you suggested and went to eBay and I found one with 133K shutter count that the seller said is in very good condition (80-85%). He said he purchased the camera from National Camera Exchange. He had $2400. as asking with best offer. I offered $1500. and he accepted. I am hesitant now because he accepted the offer rather quickly. The photos on the camera look very good. I would love to know your opinion.
Thanks for what you do brother.

Have use the Nikon D700 is a great camera but to sharp. And use the Nikon D5 and D6 but don’t have autofocus with my AF-D lenses. For now I use the Nikon F5 which is still a great camera. Maybe I sell also my Nikon D5 and my D6. There is no perfect camera for me the lenses are important and how you think how the light is inside and outside. Which camera is best for me? I love the touch screen and 10 fps of the crop sensor but in the same time I would love to have the full frame with quiet shutter like D810. 16 megapixels is plenty if you aren't cropping a lot. You can print 40X50s all day out of that camera. I looked on ebay yesterday and most of the D4s were going for around $2500. Some of them had about 30,000 clicks. Billboards are misleading Ken. You can shoot those with 4 megapixels. Because of the viewing distance the image quality doesn't have to be that wonderful. If you get 5 feet from a billboard it will look like crap.

Because there's more to creating an image than just dynamic range. Some people put just far too much focus on 1 single thing. Be it, dynamic range, high ISO performance or whatever else is the flavor of the week. Creating an image is about more than just 1 single thing & in the end, on paper specs mean little as well.

Thing is, nobody is going to ask this, unless they're know nothings to begin with. 12MP is fine for most of what wannabe photographers shoot these days, let's be honest.

I’m a fucking pro with a d5. 20mpx. I use that beast for sport. only jpg oncamera. you have to learn a lot but if you are like a boss you can shoot jpg. no difference every time I have shooted in raw+jpg. if you know how to expose and the picture controls. obviously you have a 1 stop margin in exposure. but in jpg you double the empty space in your memory cards, in your hd, in your archive, half the price of memory, half time to discarghe the cards, to elaborate the images, x2 speed in processing, x2 speed to send faster wirless or ethernet cable your file to the client. 99% sharp images in focus. I could print in a couple of seconds. d5 or d4 needs only a better fps, and the possiblity to switch from all the af modes with a dedicated button (not a combination of buttons etc) and a faster option to view select and crop in the display the images to send (the current selection mode is not so fast and to crop you have to spend more time). a good photographee knows how to set the wb the nr and all
the picture controls to have a printable photo just 2 second after the shoot :) I’m a retoucher and a ps lover. for all that beautiful work I use only d850 and raw. but that’s another type of work. a slow work. kill me if I use a d5 in a studio. or a d5 below iso6400 or in afs. I’m exagerating but you know what I mean: I don’t use a murcielago for an offroad race
