    Dr. Doug Lisle is an evolutionary psychologist and co-author of The Pleasure Trap: Mastering the Hidden Force that Undermines Health and Happiness. He and his colleagues (Jennifer Howk and Richard Seidel) have developed a revolutionary method for approaching life challenges and improving self-confidence and self-esteem. They describe their approach as Esteem Dynamics - an approach with clinical insights derived from evolutionary psychology.
    Central figures having major influence on the development of Esteem Dynamics include Richard Dawkins, John Tooby and Leda Cosmides, David Buss, Robert Trivers, Steven Pinker, and Geoffrey Miller. All of these individuals are considered world-leading theorists in evolutionary theory and human psychology. Somewhat surprisingly, insights from these trailblazers has yet to reach mainstream clinical psychology, and thus major advances stemming from some of the world’s greatest thinkers have yet to be systematically applied to problems of helping people improve their lives. Esteem Dynamics is the first such effort, and weds Dr. Lisle’s 30-years of clinical experience to the deep insights into human nature only recently available via evolutionary psychology.
    Dr. Lisle received his undergraduate education from the University of California, San Diego. He completed his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at the University of Virginia, and was then appointed Lecturer in Psychology at Stanford University. His research and clinical interests include health and wellness, self-esteem, relationship satisfaction, the treatment of anxiety and depression, the genetics of individual differences, and optimizing achievement motivation. In addition to his work with Esteem Dynamics, Dr. Lisle lectures widely on health and wellness.

    I enjoyed reframing relationships as a set of future and present trades and that there is an oscillation of extending and retracting credits lines. Sometimes it gets out of balance and the other person reacts (anger). So true. Nice insight.

    Very interesting, especially the exercise stuff. I’ve always been athletic and in shape, and for most of my life thought that “well, if you’re overweight, you just need to exercise more” kinda thing. I now believe “it’s da food!” I’d love links to the research Dr. Lisle referenced about this. And, AJ, can’t wait for your book (I pre-ordered!).

    Dr Burn also think that exercise is very important for health as exercise help to reduce stress, inflammation and excessive hormones.

      And it helps with regular bowel movements. Moving stool in timely fashion out of colon is very important. Disabled folks know this All too well. 💜

    I always considered exercise as a way to connect with our bodies again. I wondered why weight loss shows were making morbidly obese people exercise so much and didn’t think that was safe. But after years of being sedentary and overthinking everything, movement could help that mind-body connection.

    Listening to Dr Lisle speak about his mother is just so heart-warming. What a true gentleman with a great heart!
    I can relate to how he feels about his cat and knowing that is the "special one" and so savouring it's life - that's how I feel with Buster!

    The idea that calories aren’t utilized to move is objectively wrong (and foolish to even claim). This is easily provable.
    Now does exercise or food play a larger role in weight…you can always eat your way to weight gain..

    Exercise builds muscle which in turns raises metabolic rate. Dose isn’t really that great and varies for individuals.

      I watch TH-cam videos of people hiking the Pacific crest Trail, or riding their bicycles across the United States and they lose weight despite consuming twice as many calories or more than they usually do in their normal lives.
      I watched two fellows in their 60s hike the Pacific crest Trail on TH-cam last year and they both lost about 30 pounds over the summer
      They ate everything they could get their hands on … but we’re hiking 20+ miles per day up and down hills caring 25 pound backpacks

      I think his point is just like every other automated bodily function, calorie burning is regulated by the body. We can "over excersis" just like we can over eat. Think about hiking that many miles every day for a whole summer. Most people would never get anywhere close to that kind of calorie burning. His advice is geared towards the typical person. There are always people on the edges of normal and some extremes.

      @@liahk1000Stool sitting in the colon equals weight. 🤷‍♀️In the disabled community any exercise helps with normal bowel function.

    I am intrigued that we have a maximum level of energy expenditure. So CICO, or calories in, calories out, is out? Any links for studies or papers addressing this would be appreciated.

    The first question re: weightloss/energy burning and exercise - tip. Smile. I knew a woman, whose boyfriend was out of the country for a few months. She looked great! Lost a ton of weight. Her secret - all of the time she used to be out eating and/or having sex with her boyfriend she was now doing aerobics. The time she was "investing" in eating she was now "investing" in exercise - less time eating. She made me laugh.
