RIP Edwin , saw him live he was a fantastic performer ,when he did WAR he was like a "fire and brimstone " preacher he got us all up on our feet singing "absolutely nothin'", sadly missed.
Rest in Power ... Edwin Starr....War is a Classic !! & he was one of Tamla Motown's Greatest Voices. He made Many Great Songs, throughout his career ...have a Listen to ...S.O.S Stop her on Sight. Contact. Happy Radio. & You got my Soul on Fire.......Thank you Andre & Dominica for your Reviews i always enjoy Listening to you Both. :)
1970 one year before I got my draft # 1 in 1971, this was a very Popular song with me and my friends, 1972 when I turned 18 the draft ended my # 243. We were so Thankful.🙏 This song so impactfully truthful Peace 😊✌️ and Love ❤️ your 70 year old forever Young Hippie Gary💃🕺 Great Reaction👍 Dominika for President you got my VOTE! 😃
The thing I love about this song is the focus on War itself. Launching back through history, people have often glorified war as actually virtuous on its own, they glorify being a solder, fighting for your country --- independently of any reason. Yet actual soldiers who have experienced the blood, the gore, pain, horror and dying know it to be evil. It may have been necessary to stop a greater evil, but that doesn't make it virtuous. On Veterans/Remembrance Day, it's right to honor those who sacrificed for their fellow man. We can honor sacrifice without glorifying war.
🇬🇧 Love Edwin Starr, he had a few hits back in the day, this one included. Now try his disco hits "Happy Radio" "S.O.S. (Stop Her On Sight)" & "Eye To Eye Contact " Bloody fabulous ❤🎼🎶
Thank You! I’m 5 generations military that served. Very proud of my family and every Brother and Sister’s that have served and still Serving Our Beautiful County!!
6:10-Great summation.. Then the 20 years we spent in Iraq? As soon as we left, it was back to biz for all the regimes there..sigh. But what a great song by the Motown machine..Edwin's power vocal with the all too true lyrics and the Funk Brothers house band..dy-no-mite!
Great singing performance by Edwin on this amazing no-holds-barred song about the inherent evils of war. AND, Dominika--I think you're right: Edwin's voice is very similar to Tom Jones at points. I've heard this a thousand times but never put that together. When I saw that you and Andrei were going to listen to this, I knew you would love it. On a lighter note, '25 Miles From Home' features a great vocal performance by Edwin. I can imagine Andrei singing this song when he is away from Dominika.
The Vietnam War was the defining issue in the USA boomer generation. There was still a draft, and all men were supposedly in danger of being sent off to a distant land we did not even know the name of. Perhaps the most unfair part of the draft was the "college deferment", which was an exemption if you were in college. Of course in 1964, only the wealthy went to college, often the sons of the very politicians who decided the USA should get involved in a civil war in Asia. So the soldiers were mostly lower class. Creedence Clearwater Revival had a wonderful song about this situation, FORTUNATE SON. Give it a listen sometime.
This is best version of this song !!!! His voice amplifies-the subject . It’s visceral raw and nasty. Not surprising the GIs in Vietnam loved this. They knew it was a stupid unnecessary war that killed so many innocent people whether they were in Vietnam or waiting at home hoping for their kids safe return.
So, Edwin Starr is just talking about the entity of "War" itself.....the whole concept of it...and Humankind has been in War with itself for over 45,000 years and cannot break away from it. We as humans are slaves to WAR and he is saying that it is solves absolutely "Nothing." Love this song!!!
Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong wrote "War" in 1969 as an anti-Vietnam War statement for Motown. The Temptations originally recorded the song, but Motown decided not to release it as a single because they didn't want to alienate their conservative fans. Motown bought Starr's previous label, Golden World, and Starr became a Motown artist. When Motown began receiving requests to release "War" as a single, Starr volunteered to record his own version. Starr insisted on recording the song his way. Motown released Starr's version of "War". This Motown song about war that flew to #1 after producer Norman Whitfield fought to have it released as a single and convinced hit-maker and military veteran Edwin Starr to sing it - and which has become iconic. Motown boss Berry Gordy observed in his autobiography, To Be Loved: The Music, the Magic, the Memories of Motown, “‘War,’ with Edwin’s thundering vocals and Norman’s raging tracks, charged up to #1 and became almost an anthem of the times - voicing the deep antiwar feelings of a growing number of people.”
I love your reactions, i was a teenager during the Vietnam war and i agree 💯% with what you said. I lost friends and lived with and saw the effects of it on family members and friends that came home totally different. War is the government not the innocent people. Control, Power and Greed. Love you guys.❤😊🇺🇸 ☮️🕯️❤️🦋🌹
i've lived 63 years, and there has always been some war raging, whether my country was involved or not. will there ever be a human who can live out their entire life and say, "there was never any war in my lifetime"? sadly, i think the answer is "no".
Couple other anti war songs are The War Song by Culture Club and It’s a Mistake by Men at Work. Both are a bit more subtle but are definitely anti war. As is War Pigs by Black Sabbath but I think you guys reacted to that already.
What ?? No gain?? WWI. WWII. What are you talking about???Without the military strength of the USA there would be no freedoms in the world today. You wouldn't be here on this channel you's be speaking German with very hard times.
Without young russians no Victory either. USA 300 000 young men died . Russia, 20 millions ( young old military civilians). By the way , there's 5 to 10 wars each year nowedays. So , that' s not a peaceful world we are living in.
Military strength of the USA? seriously? if the US did not get help from other countries, the US would be nothing. What war has the US been to and won? Vietnam? NO! Afghanistan? NO! Korea? NO! Iraq? NO! so name one.
Hi its lovely to see you both from perth down under like this voice ! check out Chris Rae I went to college with his brother you will love everything he does everything
Right on! It's always the politicians who start but never have to fight the wars.
RIP Edwin , saw him live he was a fantastic performer ,when he did WAR he was like a "fire and brimstone " preacher he got us all up on our feet singing "absolutely nothin'", sadly missed.
Edwin Starr is consider a national hero in the UK, Although a Black American he later moved and stay in Nottinghamshire untill his death
Today is Remembrance Day in Canada where we remember those who fought and lost their lives in wars so we could live in a free country. Lest we forget.
And Veteran’s Day here in America as well. God bless this globe at this time!
Thanks one of my favorite🎉

An amazing song. Amazing performance. Bruce Springsteen does a pretty strong cover as well.
Even the backing singers rip your guts out when they shout war !!!!
Thank you to any Veterans on this channel🇺🇸. This song was so popular ❤️
We must keep the hope alive, Dominika. We must keep singing songs like this. 🕊 ☮🧡🎶
This song is as much a 'banger' today as it was when it was released. 🎶 👌
Hello Canada today is veterans Day in America

Trump was one of those rich kids.
Thank you for explaining 😊

Best anti war song EVER!!
For all veterans, God bless you ❤🇺🇸
Springsteen did It too !( Official vidéo is live)
i've lived 63 years, and there has always been some war raging, whether my country was involved or not. will there ever be a human who can live out their entire life and say, "there was never any war in my lifetime"? sadly, i think the answer is "no".
Though not quite as good Bruce Springsteen did a cover of this, great reaction as always.
Springsteen's live cover version is fire. 🔥
Nice❤
And who suffers? Usually, innocents. Let those who believe in war fight each other.
Love this couple ❤ The woman I can marry NOW. Interlectual but no Bull...
You should do a reaction to Bruce's version from 1985. It's a killer!!!
Bruce Springsteen covered this in 1985. The video is 🔥
A lot of Top 40 radio stations in the conservative south refused to play this back in the anti-Viet Nam day
This was a huge anti war anthem during Vietnam.
When the peaceful people get angry change is going to come.
This a protest song against the Korean war.
Couple other anti war songs are The War Song by Culture Club and It’s a Mistake by Men at Work. Both are a bit more subtle but are definitely anti war. As is War Pigs by Black Sabbath but I think you guys reacted to that already.
