The wars are over wealth that the dead will never touch, nor will their families.

"War" was a number one hit for Edwin Starr in 1970 and a number eight hit for Bruce Springsteen in 1986. Edwin Star wrote the song in protest of the War in Vietnam. At its peak in the mid to late sixties there were 500,000 American soldiers sent there to fight. Springsteen covered the song in protest to American involvement in the civil wars in El Salvador and Nicaragua, as well as to push back against misinterpretations and political abuses of his song "Born in the USA", about a veteran of the Vietnam War left behind by the "Greed Is Good" branding of Reagan era America.

Definitely the Vietnam era 😞 What they did to our young men is unforgivable. It was a very popular song, always will be.
I was 10 and shared a room with my older sister who was in high school. Radio was always playing in our room. I didn’t understand the war at that age but did within a few years. I just knew it was really a bad time for our country and it caused much division.

I'm an old guy. I know this song very, very, well. I served for 30 years in the US military, and my father for 29 years before me. There are those who talk and sing about the evils of war and the blessings of peace, and then those who actually put their lives on the line to secure it. "They say we must fight to keep our freedom, But Lord knows there's got to be a better way." I wish with every part of my being that were true, but there is absolutely no evidence in all of human history to support the belief that it is.

Because it is what we're taught! I am 72. Vietnam proved war was only used for political means and for money. They say war is old men sending young men to die/ or rich men sending poor men to die. There has to be a reason and its up to the people to decide if the reason is worth the sacrifice. If we always rely on war to solve our differences then we are doomed! Then there is so hope!

Powerful cover of "Temptaions". They way he sung it was needed to vocalize feeling of teenagers and young adults about Vietnam War. While these young adults and teenagers challenged our Government for a war we shouldn't have entered and were correct. But they errored in their response to returning soldiers with disgust and hatred towards them. They blamed all soldiers for the very few percentage of soldiers who committed horrendous crimes in Vietnam. Most soldiers were drafted but there was many volunteers also. What they had in common was they like all soldiers in all wars must follow orders or face Court Martial and jailed or branded with a dishonor discharge. No Veterans were or have been treated with such disrespect when returning from service during war times. I liked your reaction and agree that lyrics are powerful and do also apply to our World today. ✌️

Some of your information is flawed. Only one third of all U. S. personnel in Vietnam were draftees (conscripts). 70% of all combat deaths during the Vietnam War were volunteers. The average age of combat personnel in Vietnam was 22. During WW II. Today in 2024, factoring in the last combat troops left Vietnam in February 1973, the youngest U. S. combat veterans of the Vietnam War would have turned 70 this year.

@@Nomad-vv1gkIt was 63.3 pct of volunteers who died in Vietnam. If you include officers, Marine, Navy, Air , USMC who were a high pct. of volunteers than you reach 70 % of volunteers who died. 50% of drafted Army personnel died. The ones who did most of the fighting in the most difficult combat. Many volunteers who knew their chance of being drafted was a high pct. decided to volunteer. The smart ones volunteered for Marine, Navy, and Air. The brave ones and those who didn't understand what was instore for them volunteered for Army. These were also the ones who caught hell from fellow Americans for the terrible disgusting indiscretion of the very few. The ones who followed orders and had no choice. The ones who gave the most. We celebrate Veterans from the Iraq Wars more often than we do for Korean and Vietnam Veterans who died for wars we never should have entered. Canada didn't enter them.....

This cover version was released in 1970, Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong wrote "War" in 1969 as an anti-Vietnam War statement for Motown. The Temptations originally recorded the song, but Motown decided not to release it as a single because they didn't want to alienate their conservative fans. Motown bought Starr's previous label, Golden World, and Starr became a Motown artist. When Motown began receiving requests to release "War" as a single, Starr volunteered to record his own version. Starr insisted on recording the song his way. Motown released Starr's version of "War". This Motown song about war that flew to #1 after producer Norman Whitfield fought to have it released as a single and convinced hit-maker and military veteran Edwin Starr to sing it - and which has become iconic.
Motown boss Berry Gordy observed in his autobiography, To Be Loved: The Music, the Magic, the Memories of Motown, “‘War,’ with Edwin’s thundering vocals and Norman’s raging tracks, charged up to #1 and became almost an anthem of the times - voicing the deep antiwar feelings of a growing number of people.”

One of, if not the best anti-war song ever recorded. War Pigs and Gimme Shelter are great ones too, but this is about as poignant, and dead on accurate as it gets.
