  • The Doloriad is a brilliant piece of literary fiction; a twisted twist on the post-apocalypse, reminiscent of Cormac McCarthy, Greek tragedies, Shakespeare's darkest plays.

I've been binge watching your older videos and furiously adding titles to my TBR. I'm also really enjoying your rainbow dinosaur shirt! The Doloriad reminds me of the Colt family in Australia, and, as you said, Cormac McCarthy. It's what you imagine the story of some of the peripheral characters in "The Road" would be.

Omg that's such a good point! The peripheral characters of The Road, absolutely!

This is one of those books that I've been both hyped and scared about! Could it be this year's Earthlings? God I hope so.
Almost done with Our Wives Under The Sea 😱

And thanks for complimenting my tonally questionable outfit lol but it is actually a dress! I put it on for a night at the theatre and quickly filmed the video before leaving the house lol

One of my subscribers suggested I watch your review and yes! I kept thinking about Titus Andronicus while reading this too. The writing was by far my favorite part but yeah some parts were sickly funny. The schoolmaster’s character I found the most comedy in, not sure why, might have something to do with the bizarre nature of his moth mound obsession (even typing that I am giggling). But the last chapter took me for a loop and I’m still trying to untangle it 🥴 can’t wait to binge your videos! Also ugh I wish I had the British cover as well as the US edition, your copy is so creepily fantastic

I immediately put in a reservation for it on my library's Web site, should have it in a couple of months. The American cover does not have that crazy face but some nice green trees 😄😸. I had also learned of Sayaka Murata's great "Earthlings" from you so thanks again 👍

Love your channel! It’s a recent discovery for me, so I’ve enjoyed going through many of your videos. We have very similar taste in books, so I’ll be keeping my eye on any recommendations from you that aren’t already on my tbr list!
I think you got a couple (minor) details wrong here!
    1) Agathe is the youngest sibling, not Dolores! At least, the youngest of the Martiarch’s children. It’s not explicitly stated, but I imagine some, if not all, of Jan’s children are younger than Agathe.
    2) While there are many allusions and references to Greek mythology throughout the book, the philosopher in the sitcom is, as the title Get Aquinas in Here implies, very specifically St. Thomas Aquinas, not a Greek philosopher. Aquinas was an influential medieval Italian philosopher known for scholasticism, a school of thought with a heavy focus on dialectical reasoning and explicit disputations. Also, as a prominent Christian (hence the sainthood), he was a strong proponent of natural theology. I think the philosopher being St. Thomas Aquinas and him being known for scholasticism and natural theology are particularly important for interpreting the meaning for the sitcom and the book as a whole. I’m not super well versed on Aquinas myself, so I need to digest a bit more of his work and thought to truly grasp the connection.
