honestly Milk Fed is probably one of the best books I've ever read. The only other book that made me feel the way this book did is Earthlings so that's a huge compliment coming from me. When you posted on ig stories that you're reading Milk Fed I knew you'd love it and I wasn't wrong!

Earthlings is one of my all-time faves as well. These punk books by awesome women are everything to me.

This was indeed a great video! I love both of Melissa Broder’s novels, but definitely prefer Milk Fed. It is, yep, very relatable for me, and I think your point about this being a likely factor in one’s choice out of the two is spot on.
Honestly even though the protagonist in The Pisces is pretty messed up, someone relating to her probably has a pretty fun, badass life 😆 Oh, the strange impressions and emotions of a Broder novel…

YO THIS IS ON POINT i want to stand up and clap!!! I read both and liked Milkfed much more than the Pisces and I think you got to the heart of why that might be. Whether you relate to the selfish vs. self-flagellating character.. very on point!! I'm a self-restricting, self-flagellating person for whom imposing on other ppl let alone being selfish towards them is ANATHEMA, and maybe that's why I found Milkfed relatable. Your point about attitude towards sex was also right: I have zero experience and interest in casual dating and as you said, have an (embarrassingly) honest approach to sex and I think that was why I found the majority of Pisces supremely uninteresting (although I can very much appreciate what Broder was doing by describing bad sex for women) whereas food and religion I can totally relate to. So yeah I vaguely figured Milkfed vs. Pisces comes down to what kind of person you are but I could never have pinpointed as you did. So wow kudos you did it!!!!

Also I read Milkfed first and liked it better which seems to correspond to a general trend where ppl who already read Broder liked Milkfed less which is very interesting!

Thank you so much for coming in and supporting my point! They're similar books in tone and theme, but the protag you relate to most will determine your favourite. They really force you to confront uncomfortable truths about yourself tho lol which is not for everyone!

I’m two years late to the game here but on your recommendation I just finished Milk Fed. It was hands down my favorite book I’ve read in a very long time and found this book so unbelievably relatable, esp the eating disorders and their sources. Anyway, thank you for this recommendation. Milk Fed did not disappoint. Now for The Pisces…I think I’ll let some time pass before giving that one a go to give it the space to stand on its own and avoid comparing it to the golden child that I’ve deemed Milk Fed.

I read Milk Fed first and was shocked how much I related to Rachel's problems and how similar my life aligns with hers, and I did really like it. Then I read the Pisces and was so disappointed how different it was, and lowkey hated every second of reading it, just stubbornly getting through it. Then after I finished it, it suddenly clicked and I understood the love addiction and infatuation, the reason the protagonist was so awful and how I could see that selfishness in myself as well. I think I agree with you, in that I do think that Milk Fed is the better novel, but the Pisces sticks with me a lot more.

There are books you read and forget, but the pisces is so intense, memorable, and just gets into your skin. It really sucked me into her world and everything she goes through, her lowest low. I'll want to read anything from the author. So excited too know about her new book 🥰

Absolutely, The Pisces is one of the most memorable books I've ever read. I sometimes can't remember what book I finished yesterday but The Pisces is etched onto my brain!

I bought the Pisces straight away after watching your last video. It was a very original book - dark, funny, moving and very relatable despite (or bc of) its ‘unlikeable’ narrator (and despite the supernatural elements ha!). As someone who has struggled with weight issues and body dysmorphia all her life, I’m a bit worried that I will find Milk Fed ‘too relatable’, however I’m curious and can’t wait to draw my own comparison :) (Also, I trust your review and think Melissa Broder cannot disappoint at this point!)

I'm so happy that you enjoyed The Pisces on my recommendation! And I do think Milk Fed could be potentially triggering so tread with caution!

Hello from Denmark. Hope you're good in this anxious time of life. I've read the pisces and I absolutely loved it. And now I want to read milk fed. I think I can relate to this story as well. Thank you for the review 🙂

This was a fantastic video! The Pisces has been on my TBR for awhile but I skipped over Milk Fed mistakenly because I assumed it was about motherhood (possibly because of the cover) - not that books about motherhood aren’t my cup of tea but you know. Anyways, Milk Fed sounds awesome so yes, adding to my TBR. Many thanks, Willow!

I understand being reserved when it comes to books about motherhood. There are some that I love and others that really unsettle me, as someone who hates the idea of being a parent. And Milk Fed is about motherhood to a point, but that's not the focus of it.

ahhhh this has made me want to read the pisces all over again bc WHAT A BOOK. milk fed was great but seemed to follow the same structural formula as the pisces which made me enjoy it a little less, although some of the descriptions of food in milk fed are just 🤤

      @WillowTalksBooks  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

That's a very good point! The friend who preferred Milk Fed read it first, so I wonder if that's a trend with people who read both her books. Your first one becomes your fave!

I don't think I would read this book (it sounds potientially triggering idk), but I'm very curious about The Pisces. The protag of that one sounds more reletable. Gotta love difficult women protagonists!

So Sad Today, Melissa Broder's collection of essays is really good, and highly recommend you check out presents ideas or sketches of how her novels will turn out to be. This is because of how she goes about elaborating on her sexual experiences, depression, and eating disorders. I love how she was able to turn to novel-writing, especially about things like this that are so personal to her both in the Pisces and Milk Fed.

Thanks for the tip! I've heard about her essays and her poetry but have read none of it. You've really sold me on So Sad Today, though!
