Still won’t forgive this remake for scrubbing out nearly all of Mario’s original dialogue. If there’s one thing the original has that’s missing in the remake, it’s personality.
I always felt like there are two versions of Donkey Kong: The Donkey Kong from Mario: A dummy angry ape who does dummy things. Kidnap hot female humans and steal toys. Cranky and Donkey the third are treated as the same person. The Donkey Kong by Rare/Retro Studio: Dummy but not ape level of dummy. He's a hero who loves and defends his family and bros. Cranky and Donkey the third are treated as two different apes.
@wumple No, you're the fake fan, there's only two Donkey Kongs. Donkey Kong Jr. never went out for smokes and dind't come back because he's the current donkey kong grown up. Only idiots think there's a third Donkey Kong running around, the idiots who run DKwiki specifically. Like seriously you think that Donkey Kong Jr. is still somewhere out there or dead and they never said anything about it? That's so goddamn stupid it makes me surprised you breathe oxygen.
@@orsonzeddIt's been back and forth. Originally, Donkey was Cranky's grandson (making him DK.JR's son) but later on, Nintendo started calling him Cranky's son (which would make him a grown up DK. Jr) which one is canon is up in the air
0:27 “Butchers him as a character though” Yeah that’s why I personally don’t deem this or the sequels canon, Well other than the fact that Mario owning a successful toy company takes away huge parts of his Everyman trait, How I like to think is that he and the current Dk are friends, Maybe just have some friendly if aggressive rivalry in sports and karting, And Mario’s just a plumber
Poor DK, his father (DK Junior) didn’t allow him to play with toys so long when he saw the mini Mario’s he has a Ratatouille realization to where he has to get one
The only thing I don't like about these remakes is that it prevents the originals from ever being added to NSO. Nintendo can just be like: "Wanna play Mario vs Donkey Kong or Super Mario RPG on your switch? ...Tough shit. That'll be $50 more bucks for something MOSTLY like that old game!" Again though, this is something that would be remedied by just having older games on the eshop. But in THAT regard Nintendo HATES you wanting to give them money for some reason.
If you’re really loving the puzzle platformer approach to Mario Vs Donkey Kong I’d honestly recommend Donkey Kong 94’. A adaptation of the original arcade Donkey Kong for the game boy that introduced all the flips and puzzle elements that Mario vs Donkey Kong had. It is such a wonderful game with so much charm and a much more immersive setting and story involved I highly recommend it.
The score system removal is even weirder to me because I feel like nobody's talked about it, besides you. I kind of expected More people would be bothered by that, score chasing always felt like an important element of this game and I actually really enjoyed it.
As someone who never played the original version, I’m fine with the price. It’s added enough new, and fixed the slight issues described in the video about the original version. Pure and simple.
Mario and Donkey Kong should have have a game where they have to work together like Banjo-Kazooie or Ratchet & Clank or something. The gameplay would be PEAKED
If they do a sequel that continues the style of Mario vs DK/DK 94’ it’d be cool if they had King K. Rool steal the toys instead and Mario and DK team up to stop him. Like Mario does the puzzle oriented stages and DK does the more platform heavy stuff
I was holding off on grabbing this but as someone who grew up on the og I'll be buying this based on your video Thanks for doing these sorts of things mr uncle al
If we're being even more specific, its a remake of a gba game thats a sequel to Donkey Kong on the og Gameboy. You heard me right, Mario was picking up keys and doing backflips on a simple Gameboy.
I believe that Video Games is an art form & remakes can maybe give the wrongful impression, simular to Disney Live Action remakes trying to make the Og's look babyish which is just HA. There have been welcomed remakes (Re2, Re3, Re4, Sm64DS, Crash, Spyro, Spongebob) but then there are remakes that might be recieved with "did we really needed this? The OG is already great" (Mario Rpg, Superstar Saga, Bowsers inside Story, Conker, Gta Trilogy ) Its a matter of Opinion, & as long as we never forget the dedication, passion of the original team behind the original Resident Evil, Mario Rpg, so on, then its all good. If a new Banjo game is Banjo 4, great, if its a Crash style Remake of Banjo 1, still great, I'll take either
The wired thing about Mario vs Donkey Kong is that it's kind of a sequel to Donkey Kong on the game boy which starts out like the arcade game but then it goes full puzzie platformer I think it could get a good remake as well and you should check it out it's good. and he has yay \('v')/
Damn, I hope they keep remaking old Game boy games into full remastered versions of themselves, if they ever do Metroid Fusion I'm basically just going to go out and steal a Switch!!! Lol
For me the game doesn’t feel Mario enough or Donkey Kong enough. It’s a fun novelty but the too-simple shapes and colors, the weirdly stiff Mario movement compared to any other game where you can play as him, the static backgrounds…I just can’t say it really stands out. I really like the main menu theme though.
I have to disagree as I had recently booted up the original on my SP and his controls are perfect and responsive to me his has no delay when he jump is press. The challenge and realism is what makes the original title enjoyable "well for me" as it makes the later levels more perfectly executed. The remake is sluggish and takes away the pressure and time challenge for the golden star. In my opinion the original is superior.
If they had remade this along with a remake of Donkey Kong '94 for the Game Boy and put them together into one package, it would have absolutely been worth $50 maybe even $60. But this is Nintendo, they wouldn't bundle a remake of DKC Returns with the Switch version of Tropical Freeze to make it worth the $60 they were asking for.
The greatest fault of the remake is how Mario no longer says “Good job little guy!” when a Mini Mario reaches the door in the new game plus levels.
Still won’t forgive this remake for scrubbing out nearly all of Mario’s original dialogue. If there’s one thing the original has that’s missing in the remake, it’s personality.
7:38 Yeah, and where's my goddamn electric car Bruce!?!
That’s what I thought of too 😂😂😂

Sorry but there's no Donkey Kong the third. He and Candy haven't sealed the deal. There is just cranky and his son the current Donkey Kong
@@orsonzeddDK Jr is Cranky’s son and our current DK is Cranky’s grandson
Fake fan, smh

@@thegreygoblin5165 He could be Donkey Kong Jr. AND his grandson, you know? Names are arbitrary and Jr. and Sr. can skip generations

Glad you enjoyed it! but really hope there's already an actual Donkey Kong game on the way
Same here brotha... Same here
i would have loved a remake of Donkeay kong 94 remake. it is such a forgotten gem
DK92 was pretty good, too.
Nah man, remake Super Donkey Kong 99
Great review! One more thing: The fact they took away Mario’s unique voice lines from the cutscenes is bad - showed his personality much more!
Mario saying "Good job little guy!" was a spot on my bingo board that didn't get marked...

Nintendo will do that while also selling Link's Awakening on NSO and Switch
We all said that, but then they added N64 to NSO, complete with Mario 64. This was after they already released 3D All Stars
If it was $40, I’d probably pick it up; just waiting to see if a certain franchise gets a game this year…
Donkey Kong Country…

I Just now realized that the Thumbnail is a reference to the meme of an Ape chasing a Girl while riding a Tricycle. Clever.
Im glad to see your still at it al still love your videos

You could almost say it's Donkey Wrong.
Naw this must be the Weaboo Kollector Kong
A level editor with an online sharing platform to spread your levels would easily justify the price.
I have that exact same shirt.
P.S. I walk into your home and wear it when you’re not. Great video! 😁👍
That Thumbnail goes so hatd
$50 is better than $60.
Being a Mario game, I was expecting a catchier soundtrack. Also I hear Mario talked a lot more in the original
loving the reviews man! keep 'em comin'!
They removed the "Come back here, you big-a monkey" and "Oh you mama mia *italian gibberish*" lines so instant downgrade

Glad to know you struggled to jump too. I just thought I sucked at the game as a kid.
Its cute for like a free demo.
This is just one of those games where I'd pick it up for maybe $30.

Lol he got mad because he wanted a Donkey Kong game.
💀💀💀💀
Hey al can i have a link to your discord again and also my main account got hacked (on discord)
play donkey kong for gameboy
They should’ve had dk Jr be the main character and have a young king k rool be villain who steals the toys.
it's a classic donkey kong game tho
