Vintage Bulldozer forgotten for a decade.. Will it start??

  • I heard about an old Bristol 25 dozer sitting in a shed in a remote part of the Marlborough Sounds for the past decade so I went to investigate.
    The machine was no longer used by the owner so I paid $500 for it and I will go back there soon, give them a quad bike and try to get some of the other old machines running for them.
    Thanks Reece from Supercheap Auto for supplying the toolkit used in this vid-

    Watched one of these "will it start?" videos from the US. The yank never shut up with his loud voice. Kiwis and Aussies are such a refreshing change.

      I don't know if you'll like other types of "will it run" style videos but I find Junkyard Digs to be very informative with his and not very loud for an American.

    Back in the early 90's I was living in Washington state. Several friends had picked up old dozers from the early 50's that the blades only went up and down. They were too heavy to haul around and with those one way blades you could buy them for around $800.00 to $1,000.00 They were real handy to have and most ran good. Several friends dozed off house pads with them and leveled driveways. This film which I enjoyed brought back some good memories, thanks!

    Another great video, Marty 👍. To the commenters who are worried about the tracks squeaking. This tractor is from before sealed and lubricated track chains were invented, so the pins and bushes run ‘dry’. When you can’t hear them squeaking, thats a cause for concern because that means mud, clay or rock dust has gotten in and is creating excessive wear.

    Love this, my father bought and old 1960's mini backhoe like 15 years ago, hydraulic drive tracks and I think it's an 18 hp Onan engine. Still no idea what brand it is. It has a custom weighted blade and no hood lol. As small as it is it's still like 6000 pounds. Every friggin time he used it he blew a hydraulic line. After replacing them all he was able to dig up his well and septic tank for service. This is exactly the kind of shit my father would do until recently. (now he's too old to do this).

    Marty, I gotta say you did give me hope on an old Skytrak 5030 lift that has not run in over five years. I had to flush all the fuel lines and injector lines and the fuel tank. I got her running but something was still sticking in the injector pump. I put a bottle of Marvel Mystery Oil in 5 gallons of diesel fuel and ran that for about ten minutes and that cleared up whatever was stuck. Now it runs better than when I bought it 13 years ago. I also found that brake cleaner shot into the injectors clean them out real nice.

    The way that I like to tell if it is a positive or negative ground is: 1 check the size of the battery cable clamps, in the USA the positive is larger than the negative. 2 on a gasoline engine, look for the + and - symbols on the coil. On negative ground, the positive will be toward the switch. The negative will be towards the distributor. If someone installed the coil the wrong way, it is extremely hard to get it started cold, won’t start hot. Usually they say, it will start after I release the starter, if the engine is still rolling over.
    Good luck from north east Montana in USA. We had an IFYE or International Farm Youth Exchange student from Australia once. His daughter has been back to visit us 3 times I think.

    • @charleswhitehead7441
      @charleswhitehead7441 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The clamp size, larger on the positive is international. The problem that exists with old and much modified kit is some amateurs don't know and fit +ives to both cable , or even get them the wrong way around.

    Great job so nice to see someone do it the right way meaning check plugs a little lube in the cylinders drain the fuel before trying to crank the engine over.

    Hello from Canada, wonderfully relaxing to watch and educational as well. I have a question regarding the battery- yeah, 2 years after the fact- and that is are the + & - battery posts a different size? Wouldn't that be a giveaway for your clamps? This presupposes the clamps are as they came from the factory and have never been replaced with "whatever works". Regardless your posts are worth watching and so you have another subscriber. Now back to the video. Came back to say bravo, that is a sweet little rig, looks ideal for local work and transportable, too. Congratulations on the newest addition to your equipment fleet, let's hope she provides years of service.

    Thanks for another great rescue video, the dozers another nice addition for the price and a bit of time. I'm thinking it's a good job I don't live in NZ or AU my buddy finds cheap tractors and machines all the time there to. There seems to be more supply than demand for what you guys pay, unlike here in Canada where most stuff makes way more money or guys won't sell it. I'd have 50 acres of iron for fairly cheap your side L.O.L. Take care
