I'm making a book and need to divide it into several documents to keep down the file size, so I needed to know how to change the starting page number. Didn't occur to me to go to the Document formatting tab. Thanks a hundert billion!
Thanks for another great video. This one got me digging into the documentation to see how those things work on my iPad, because I use Pages mostly on that platform. While doing so, I noticed a slight omission in your presentation. In the video regarding Page layout, you say, “…Blank Layout Template here. So now you just have these blank pages. There's no Header. There's no Footer. There's no BodyText. Nothing. Without Headers and Footers there's no place for your page numbering to go.” However, you omitted telling how to turn on headers and footers in Page layout. Of course omitting that bit of info gave you the opportunity to show us how to use page numbering outside of headers and footers, which I for one do appreciate. Still, perhaps someone might like to see how to add headers and footers to their Page layout document. In macOS Sonoma you can turn on headers and footers in a Page layout document via the Document icon on the toolbar. On iPadOS 17 it’s a little more hidden. Tap on the down arrow next to the file’s name, Document Options, Document Setup.
And I was pretty confident that I knew almost all of the functions in ‘Pages'. I was wrong again. Thanks Gary. And never any messages “from today’s sponsor”.
Your Patreon hook in the start is always consistent in all of your videos. Whenever I click your video, I already know where exactly i need to start watching it.
Hello Gary from Germany, thank you for your videos. They are always helpful. In the section "Left and Right Facing Pages" you mentioned that we can put th Title of the Book or the Section in the Header or Footer. It doesn´t work for me ... Maybe an advice or Tip for me? Thank you very much. K. N.
I can’t see the footer box in my document so I could not apply any of these page numbers. Can you tell us how we can change the settings to show these so we can follow the video
I think it does get tricky. May have to change the headers and footers to what you want and also close and open the document again. Experiment and play around.
I have a question about Pages on iOS/iPadOS. Is there a way in which to prevent auto saving of documents? Currently I’m duplicating diocuments before editing them because I haven’t find a way to exit a document without saving it. Yes, I know there is versioning when files are stored on iCloud, but I don’t use iCloud.
@@macmost if I radically mess up a document then I want an original copy of it. That’s the only way in chich I’ve found to get around not being able to close a document without saving it.

@@1208Lotus Right, so a "Page Layout" document? If so, then page numbering doesn't work like that. I mention that in the video. With Page Layout mode, you would just put a text box with the page number in it on the page. Manually, in other words. It is not meant for creating books or reports, but things like posters, signs, newsletters, etc.
When I add a new section break so I can start page numbers as '1'--- within the new section it doesn't give me the option to click on anything in the "Page Numbering" section---what am I doing wrong?
I am having trouble with something i hope you can help with: Whenever I put the title in the center header at the top, i also want my page number on the right section of the header. but when i add the page number, the title seems to get cut off and only part of the text is visible. how can this be fixed? Thank you!
An easy way is to use the left space for the title and the right space for the page number. But if you really want it in the center then it gets more complex. Don't use the center or right one at all. Instead, use only the left one. Then use the Format side bar, "Tabs" section to add a center tab stop and a right tab stop. Then add a tab, then the title, then a tab, then the page number. Adjust the tab stop locations as needed. It gets tricky and it helps if you are already familiar with using tab stops.
Sorry Gary, This has nothing to do with page numbering or any thing that you have posted to TH-cam. I have accidentally erased all information on my mid 2011 iMac including the operating system and cannot seem to reinstall it using any of the recommended methods Command-R, Shift-Command-R or Option-Shift-Command-R. I can get to the macOS Lion screen in recovery, but I always get an error message. I’ve followed all the instructions that I can find to troubleshoot it, but still no luck. Anything you could suggest would be appreciated. I own a 2023 14” MacBook Pro M3 Pro also and really just want the iMac as external display.
I can get to recovery mode, however when I try using any of the three methods “ command r “ etc, I can only get so far and then it will give me the error message.
