Not "just saying this". Not kidding. This is probably, for me, one of the best things I have ever played. The feeling I had in the Eikon fight and even before it in the cut scene was unlike anything I can recall. I cant wait to finish this game
Literally just played through this part yesterday and having been a Final Fantasy fan and having played a good number of them over the years. This scene felt so unbelievably dark compared to what I'm used to. I was stunned. Not in a bad way, it's super powerful storytelling, but going from that little innocent kid we need to protect to seeing what happens to him (albeit as the Phoenix) felt utterly dark/brutal.
Everything just blends together so well! You've got the absolutely EPIC eikon of fire score in the background, you've got Ifrit jumping from rock to rock, you've got Joshua in his Phoenix from shouting "stay away from me!" it just absolutely ramps up the adrenaline for the battle you're about to be involved in!
Spectacle and story significance aside, the fact that they just straight up went "yeah you remember Asura's Wrath? We're doing that now" and decided to be a QTE-laden downright spectacular rail shooter for this fight was just fantastic. And with the spectacle of it all? It's just absolutely phenomenal. Can't wait to see how the game handles the other Eikon battles.
This has to be one of the best games of all time just in terms of pure spectacle if nothing else. The artists, sound designers, and animators are some of the best in the world and its all made 100x better by the awesome score
I was sad when he died. I liked him. I wonder what happened to the two guy that fought with Clive. They weren't killed by the Phoenix spawning. Maybe they survived and r in hiding
this caught me so off guard dude i dont think hes dead but HOLLLYYYYY crap that was awesome and honestly hard to watch at the same time. its been a while since weve had a final fantasy game that doesnt hold back.
I'm pretty sure he's dead for good. Joshua dying is what drives the whole emotional journey of Clive for the rest of the story. Not only he has to save the world (?) but also save his soul, find a way to forgive himself. And what a setup this is, a new fresh take on the Werewolf trope, where the protagonist kills loved ones against his own will. It's seriously one of the best prologues in gaming. If they do a shitty anime "but wait Joshua's alive" it will just cheapen the story. I hope they don't.
Clive isn't Ifrit. He would know he was looking through Ifrit's eyes and the second part of the demo has him and Cid hunting down his brother and father's killer. Try the Ikonic challenge.
something in 10:04 is so nostalgic, rushing against a boss thats ready to cast death at all party members (unavoidable, maybe to prevent fighting for too long the game has set that parameter). loved that about final fantasy, i remember seeing this kind of move in 12 and 13 from bosses
The most stunning cutscene in the entire game imo. Fantastic scores, story beats, and acting. It’s difficult for a game to really shock me but from when the king lost his head to when ifrit impales the Phoenix my jaw was completely dropped. Ifrits first entrance is just nuts in particular.
This is insane! So was Clive the one who attacked Joshua since he wasn't used to his Eikon powers yet? If so, shit... At the end, Ben Starr could literally top Adam Howden as 'Male British VA who put a lot of emotion into the main character from a JRPG'.
That is a good question. I am also wondering if it is a full transformation or is it like Attack on Titan where the Eikon surrounds the body and the Eikon is essentially a mech. I want lore and I want it now.
@@aminulhussain2277 It would legit be like the plot twist in Spec Ops The Line where the main hero of the story is actually making people suffer(that includes the iconic White Phosphorus scene).
Ifrit was Clive. But Clive had absolutely no control over him and was just sort of, in him as a passenger, which explains Clive begging Ifrit to stop hitting Joshua as Phoenix
@@dazzaboy04 I just predicted that only a while before FFXVI launched so yeah. It took plenty of time until Clive had full control over his Ifrit form.
I’m confused here. At 3:59, it seems like we’re seeing someone else turn into Ifrit from Clive’s POV, but at 12:22, it’s from Clive’s POV again as Ifrit’s pummeling Phoenix. Also in a couple of the trailers, we’ve seen 2 Ifrits fight. So is this somebody else killing Joshua or is it Clive???
Pretty sure it's Clive the whole time, I just don't think he's actually in control hence his sort of 3rd person perspective of his own transformation. Could be wrong but at least Murdoch's reaction makes it seem as though Clive transformed.
Clive, utterly traumatized, may be inhabiting Ifrit without control during the intense battle, which is why he remembers it later at the campfire, but during Ifrit's beating of Joshua, his mind couldn't take it anymore (especially because it's his Eikon form enacting such a heinous act on his little brother) and Clive found a temporary home within Torgal, who has a special bond with Clive and who was witnessing from a different vantage point without the sepia wash. Clive may have special abilities to do so, he certainly seems to have a type of precog ability shown when he's older and seems to feel danger incoming and what direction. I wonder if Elwin was like Clive, Ifrit's chosen, and didn't know it, and nothing truly ever summoned Ifrit from him (and maybe other ancestors), but something flipped the switch with Clive (intense life or death situation, fire storming about him, apydectory nearness, hard and heavy battles, a fellow Eikon summoning, and father the previous container's death, all culminating to Ifrit yanking control or being able to be summoned out to protect the host). Clive also suffers some type of amnesia due to the trauma. I would think it might be a depersonalization added to it from trauma of transformation and trauma of being an indirect tool of kinslaying. I don't think his mother's treatment of him and from her sycophants aided his coping skills growing up, and he likely learned his form of escapism early in life. Something I noticed or seem to notice during a rewatch is, when he's having his sudden migraine and falls to his knees, something of his tone changed, as if he were talking to himself or rather someone else to "Save him" - to save Joshua. It was said in such a grit clear way, not under breath as someone does when talking to themselves. Maybe a small part knows about Ifrit, but at the time only intrinsically and subconsciously understanding he was not alone in his body, mind, and spirit, but also not really knowing it was Ifrit. Edit: The more I think about the Elwin thing, the more I think it may be possible he was Ifrit's Dominant. Clearly death of a Dominant is possible while they are at their most vulnerable (human form), I imagine had Clive not been forcibly transformed into the Eikon Ifrit he would have been immolated with the others and been truly crushed by falling debris. He had several close calls already that night previous. Ifrit eventually said, Nope, that's enough, and was enraged that his cozy situation of being sneakily alive and living vicariously through his Dominant was being threatened. Again.
The dog’s next to Clive when his 3’rd person sequence starts. They put that in for a reason, I’m sure. I can’t quite figure it out myself. Quite puzzling. Yoshida’s quite a big fan of mystery, so there you go.
The story definitely has me intrigued. Did clive transform into ifrit or was it the flaming humanoid? If it was clive it seems since he cant control his transformation maybe that might explain why he wasnt chosen as the phoenix. There are also 2 ifrits as weve seen in one of the trailers. I'm so glad this releases next week
I think it wasn't Clive, and he wasn't Joshua either, well..he was also a phoenix but in a different body. If Clive is an Ifrit that means the phoenix should recognize him as his brother. So I think it's a different person controlling the ifrit using Clive's powers. Also at the end Clive says that he will kill him in Torgal's pov (probably), meaning he is not the Ifrit It could be wrong. We'll see in the full game!
I think it’s Clive. He doesn’t have control of Ifrit. When he’s pleading with Ifrit you see the scene through the same grainy lens as when we were in Joshua’s perspective as the Phoenix looking down at Ifrit.
@@ougazu32 It’s clive who is yet to have control over Ifrit. If you watch Garuda fight scene, clive turned into Ifrit when Garuda tried to squeeze Clive to death.
@@Caporg3000 not just that. In showcase, they showed a fight scene with Garuda where Garuda tried to kill Clive to death by squeezing him. Clive turned into Ifrit.
Still a bit lost whether or not that was "Clive" that became Ifrit and killed his brother due to losing control ,or if it was someone else . Past trailers have shown off what appears to be two Ifrits but guess we all just have to wait until the full game 👀
That was indeed Clive as Ifrit. Ifrit is within Clive, but he also harnesses the powers of the Phoenix. Ifrit was bursting to get out which is why Clive was experiencing the pain in his head. But when Ifrit comes out, Clive is just a passenger, with absolutely no control over Ifrit's actions
This is the second time I've heard Logan Hannan playing a young child with a power he can't control, and it STILL breaks my heart every time I hear that terrified little voice.
11:42 This scene reminds Evengelion, the scene where Bardiel take the control of the Unit 03, and then Gendo activate the Dummy Plug of the Eva 01, so Shinji watches in horror as his unit slaughters and destroys the unit piloted by a person close to him. Even the screams of Clive reminds me Shinji screaming.
I know the chances are slim to none. but since we don't see them get evaporated like Murdoch. part of my hopes Tyler and Wade are somehow alive and reunite with Clive.(and hey, maybe their last names are Biggs and Wedge)
When i first watched a gameplay video of this game, and saw Joshua fight ifrit as the phoenix i was hopeful that he would win, from what i saw he was getting the hang of his phoenix form... Then as i was watching the cutscene of the end of the battle as Ifrit was beating him i remembered, the player was meant to win in order for the game to proceed... Seeing this fight again, it hurt seeing Ifrit beating up Joshua. Why why would his mother allow Joshua to go to war!? Hes just a kid!! He wasnt ready for war!! He watched his father die infront of him, lost control of his powers, and didnt have the training nessessary for battle!! Why send him to war!?!? Please someone in the comment section please answer my question...
Yeah. Developmental psychology might see this like a from of abuse, or premature conditioning. But the culture within FF16 view it as a coming of age. He’s a dominant; transformative-elemental power that’s borderline limitless. It’s exhilarating yet burdensome. I think they’re trained/groomed from birth like a feudal monarchy. And the potential of war will become part of Joshua’s upbringing.
So we know that there are 2 "Ifrits", but I find it suspicious that we never saw Clive after the fact even when we heard his voice. (Also didn't play demo my comment is just based on this clip)
That's Phoenix and Ifrit. I believe Ifrit is some unknown fire Eikon that possesses Clive for some reason and used him to destroy Phoenix. Something is definitely going on behind the scenes.
it felt more like dissociative identity disorder, that or Clive had Ifrit's Dominant inside of him all along (but that would contradict him using Ifrit's power later on in the story).
@@coupdegrace2767 from what it seems like is that he has had an issue with ifrit trying to possess him before. Before he turned he got a head ache and said "not again not now, I must save joshua"

He also could've easily fallen into the trope of being too scared to use his powers but no, when the time came, he truly fought as hard as he could to save the kingdom. Hell, I didn't even realize the first time playing this scene that he even has a sword! Sets the stage perfectly for his personality later in the game. But can I be honest? I hated pretty much all of the Eikon battles 😅. After the initial glam wore off, I found them chaotic and confusing. I know I died multiple times in the battle against Hugo Kupka during the very, very long Eikon battle at the Fang. I would just rather keep my human form and fight that way. I still really loved this game, though. Already bought the first DLC and we're supposed to be getting another and I'll definitely be getting that one, too (seems it will be bigger than the first, which was already an extra two to three hours).

There is a bit more to explore with the Eikonic Challenge, but the skill trees seem to have a bit more depth to em
There is another part of the demo and the combat gets so much better.
This whole game already had me hooked so far but this part just added to it. This game is going to be amazing.
Not "just saying this". Not kidding. This is probably, for me, one of the best things I have ever played. The feeling I had in the Eikon fight and even before it in the cut scene was unlike anything I can recall. I cant wait to finish this game
This was upsetting to watch. Two brothers fighting each other without knowing it.
Josuah’s actor is Hugo from A Plague Tale. Perfect voice cast.
I thought there was something familiar about that voice lol Great Demo
i knew it i did heard he voice somewhere but can't remember where
Yeah and If i'm not mistaken the Voice of amicia is also on the game
@@lypexiii8018 she's young jill!
I just started playing this. The grand scale boss fights are just beyond epic. The music as usual for Final Fantasy is godlike
Wait for the later boss fights.....😅

Before playing the demo I totally thought legacy would've been GOTY but no this will be for sure
Haha i'm dead 💀
Spectacle and story significance aside, the fact that they just straight up went "yeah you remember Asura's Wrath? We're doing that now" and decided to be a QTE-laden downright spectacular rail shooter for this fight was just fantastic. And with the spectacle of it all? It's just absolutely phenomenal. Can't wait to see how the game handles the other Eikon battles.
This game is perfect! Cannot wait for full release, got 9 days straight off work to play it
Lucky 😔😔😭😭
Nice! I'm saving all my PTO for FF7 Rebirth. I'll be taking like 16 days off for that xD
My jaw was dropped the entire time I played this section. What a fantastic way to end the prologue!

This has to be one of the best games of all time just in terms of pure spectacle if nothing else. The artists, sound designers, and animators are some of the best in the world and its all made 100x better by the awesome score
Soken is such a master.
That ominous music as Ifrit rises is actually a remix of Find the Flame...
I’ll always love how as *soon* as Joshua starts to prime Torgal gets up and is just like “well you guys are fked, later!”
4:20 You can literally see Murdoch’s face burn off, this game is brutal 💀
Damn yeah if you pause at the moment you do get a glimpse of it
I was sad when he died. I liked him. I wonder what happened to the two guy that fought with Clive. They weren't killed by the Phoenix spawning. Maybe they survived and r in hiding
This was heavily inspired by game of thrones and the devs admitted it they put some elements on it
Haven’t seen something so gut wrenching in a game in so long…
Gotta say Ben starr has nailed the role of Clive so far. Haven't heard raw emotion from a voice actor like that in a while.
8:17 is where it gave me chills with the music. It is so good?
this caught me so off guard dude
i dont think hes dead but HOLLLYYYYY crap that was awesome and honestly hard to watch at the same time.
its been a while since weve had a final fantasy game that doesnt hold back.
Fr no shot they gave us one of the most badass sequences in all of FF and immediately kill him
Considering that you played as him for a small part of the game I doubt it. I bet he ifrit and phoenix will fight again
My theory is that he's still alive and that "new" dominant is actually a controlled or corrupted Joshua
Yeah i forsure hope the kid aint dead man….
It is so dark. The two brothers killing each other for no reason.
... and Phoenix could try to heal the injureds.
A tragedy.
Lust for power was the reason. Joshua was just an unintended victim of Anabella.
Clive isn't Ifrit. He would know he was looking through Ifrit's eyes and the second part of the demo has him and Cid hunting down his brother and father's killer. Try the Ikonic challenge.
@@jasonsmarr3621 Clive is ifrit's dominant, but since he wasn't in control he remains in denial and goes on a pointless search.
@@aminulhussain2277 I've seen him fight Dark Ifrit in game. Makes no sense.
@@jasonsmarr3621that boss could literally just b in his mental
One of the best and intense prologues I have experienced in gaming!!! The visual, music, plot, storytelling -superb !!
something in 10:04 is so nostalgic, rushing against a boss thats ready to cast death at all party members (unavoidable, maybe to prevent fighting for too long the game has set that parameter). loved that about final fantasy, i remember seeing this kind of move in 12 and 13 from bosses
Those timed attacks have been in a lot of square games (even outside of FF) since they added the active time battle system in FF4
This design of Phoenix is simply so beautiful my favourite.
One of the most epic fight sequences and music in the whole FF series….. 50 EXP 😂
The voice actor went so hard at the end
I cant say ive ever gotten goosebumps from a demo before
7:46 GODDAYUM THE SOUNDTRACK
i just finished the demo its Incredible
The most stunning cutscene in the entire game imo. Fantastic scores, story beats, and acting. It’s difficult for a game to really shock me but from when the king lost his head to when ifrit impales the Phoenix my jaw was completely dropped. Ifrits first entrance is just nuts in particular.
Holy. That was. DARK.
Didn't expect a demo to show this much
2 hours. Normal playthrough of full game is supposed to take 40-50 hours according to Devs. So they actually haven’t shown that much yet…
@@weilima9316 i know but demos even for a long rpg game are usually short
This is insane! So was Clive the one who attacked Joshua since he wasn't used to his Eikon powers yet? If so, shit...
At the end, Ben Starr could literally top Adam Howden as 'Male British VA who put a lot of emotion into the main character from a JRPG'.
That is a good question. I am also wondering if it is a full transformation or is it like Attack on Titan where the Eikon surrounds the body and the Eikon is essentially a mech. I want lore and I want it now.
I think that what happened was that ifrit had taken control from clive.
@@NB-bt4wf nice deduction
Genuinely as good as or better than some of the best cinema and television out there.
this scene is way to similar to Evangelion (1995)
Eva unit-1 vs Eva unit-3 but less violent.
Clive is even helpless to watch like Shinji when the dummy plug system was used.
Fuck I'm a fake evangelion fan. How I didn't think that 😢
I scrolled too far to see someone say this. This is exactly like the Bardiel fight.
The developers did state that Evangelion was a huge inspiration for the Eikon fights
And some of the later fights seem to homage other anime works. One of the boss fights mirrors Goku Vs Kid Buu in DBZ.
"I ll save them all"...
Proceeds to cremate everything possible!
Great job Joshua❤
Game of the year, and it's not even released yet. 😞🤦♂️
Literally everything that can possibly go wrong does in this scene
The story definitely has me intrigued. Did clive transform into ifrit or was it the flaming humanoid? If it was clive it seems since he cant control his transformation maybe that might explain why he wasnt chosen as the phoenix. There are also 2 ifrits as weve seen in one of the trailers. I'm so glad this releases next week
I think it’s clive. If you watch the last scene where Ifrit smashing Phoenix to pulp, you will hear Clive telling Ifrit to stop which he failed.
I think it wasn't Clive, and he wasn't Joshua either, well..he was also a phoenix but in a different body. If Clive is an Ifrit that means the phoenix should recognize him as his brother. So I think it's a different person controlling the ifrit using Clive's powers. Also at the end Clive says that he will kill him in Torgal's pov (probably), meaning he is not the Ifrit
It could be wrong.

This Demo alone would be my game of the year, Zelda was great but man this is just on another level.
Joshua: *YOU! SHALL! NOT! PASS!!!!*
That sequence @6:30 was so smooth…
Still a bit lost whether or not that was "Clive" that became Ifrit and killed his brother due to losing control ,or if it was someone else . Past trailers have shown off what appears to be two Ifrits but guess we all just have to wait until the full game 👀
Feel like its about to be some time travel involved.
@dazzaboy04 yes I'm aware now after having played the game 😅
Rip Joshua :(
Eh he's a Phoenix he'll live
He'll probably come back to life.
This has me hooked so bad. Was hyped but not to this level. So ready.
Clive's voice actor deserves an Oscar for this scene Alone.
This reminds me of evangelion Toji scene.
Someone needs to put Evangelion music over that scene and it would fit perfectly.
Yeah, the same when shinji kills asuka in rebuild
5:17 to 5:43 is so epic. Cant wait to hear what else this game has

@@aoto8897 I said it in the sense that its a boss theme that plays when you fight Ifrit
The song goes INSANE man 😭
You have to hear the German version when Clive is crying over his brother, the emotions are too heavy and real man
11:42 This scene reminds Evengelion, the scene where Bardiel take the control of the Unit 03, and then Gendo activate the Dummy Plug of the Eva 01, so Shinji watches in horror as his unit slaughters and destroys the unit piloted by a person close to him. Even the screams of Clive reminds me Shinji screaming.
The soundtrack gave me chills, the scene got me on my emotions and I thought I was watching a movie 💯🔥🎮
I know the chances are slim to none. but since we don't see them get evaporated like Murdoch. part of my hopes Tyler and Wade are somehow alive and reunite with Clive.(and hey, maybe their last names are Biggs and Wedge)
They really should have been bigga and wedge shouldn't they?
The "murderer, i kill you i fucking kill you." is what got me to buy this game.

That's Phoenix and Ifrit. I believe Ifrit is some unknown fire Eikon that possesses Clive for some reason and used him to destroy Phoenix. Something is definitely going on behind the scenes.
it felt more like dissociative identity disorder, that or Clive had Ifrit's Dominant inside of him all along (but that would contradict him using Ifrit's power later on in the story).

so in the end the one who lost control is not joshua but clive?
What a masterpiece of a game
Holy shit
The ONLY THING reeling me into this game IS the Eikon battles. All the other Devil May Cry style gameplay i can totally do without actually, but THIS is what pulls me
I love that Joshua is almost like a puppy that's trying to be tough but he actually has the power to back up his words.
