    A moment of silence for all those lost to falling off railing lacking catwalks, balconies and ledges. Thousands must have gone missing that way on Coruscant alone, daily. I know most would 'get used to it', but the way walkways are designed in Star Wars, in ultra minimalist fashion, y'all know drunk people or the unwary/just plain unlucky would fall down the side of a building many thousands of feet tall.
    Then there are the deliberate jumpers to consider. This, even before the Empire was around to turn utilitarian brutalist architecture of sci-fi futurism up to 11. Apparently railings were so passé in like 7/10 designs. There are legit more railings inside an imperial building interior in rooms with no danger of falling. But when it comes to access corridors etc they become pretty much featureless save for a bit of lighting. I get that some will be deliberate chokepoints, but c'mon, man.
    RIP all the random Imperials on Day 1 on the job, who fell to their deaths screaming.

    Challenge question: how well do Star Wars writers account for the metabolic rates/capacities of species when it comes to life expectancy? For example, approximating Yoda’s mass and weight, how much would he have to eat per day or if he’s like a tortoise, per week or month? Perhaps that rootleaf stew in Empire was Yoda’s meal for the month.

      Probably yes.

    • @jayb8934
      @jayb8934 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well that's true even in real life. Every species' (human or animal) lifespan is based on their biology/genetics as well as their culture/environment. For example, no matter what you do the average cat won't live as long as the average human because of our different biology, but populations within the same species can have far different life expectancies based on how they live, like how most animals live longer in captivity if they are properly cared for compared to in the wild, or how humans live longer today than we did even 100 years ago because of better medical science and other factors. In fact, with their access to bacta and other more advanced technology than what we have, humans in Star Wars should have a longer average lifespan than 70-80 years like us. I would expect it to be 100+.

    There were some species in here I didn't even know were short lived. Interesting. A couple of addendums; The Trandoshan god is called the Scorekeeper, not the Gamemaster. And second, you left out the Chadra-Fan. The little bat people, like the one you see with a drink in the cantina in ANH. In legends they grew and aged much faster than most other species, growing up fast and only living to be about 40 years old.

    A little fact: In Legends, humans loved longer, between one hundred to one hundred and twenty years old.
    Well, most would still die in their early hundreds if they did not make use of advanced, expensive medical technology.
    Eppie and Orn Belden were one-hundred-and-thirty-two and one-hundred-and-sixty-four, but had come through numerous organ replacements and procedures.
    Force sensetive humans could live to about two-hundred, approximately (I only know of one character, but I don't recall her name) and even - Shayoto - lived to eight hundred.

    With their access to bacta and other more advanced technology than what we have, humans in Star Wars should have a longer average lifespan than 70-80 years like us, just like how we have a longer life expectancy than people from previous eras. I would expect it to be 100+.

    • @Shinyboy29

      Some force sensitive humans can live up to 200 years if they can manipulate midichlorians to extend their life (This is Legends), like Darth Plagueis did, but doing so makes death-cheating humans twice or thrice vulnerable to dark side corruption and never to recover from it even if they were practitioners of light

  • @evanjohnson1299
    @evanjohnson1299 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I think a more accurate lifespan measurement is average age of death via old age. Like humans in the 1700's had an average age of 50 but it's skewed because of a high mortality rate among children and young men once you've made it past 30 you're more than likely to make it to 70 than 50.

  • @zephrosyne

    I thought the problem with the Cereans was not a low birthrate (overall) but the fact that the female to male birthrate was 20:1 hence the polygamy.

    Find it weird that the tall’s got classed as non-sentient despite the use of Stone Age tools. Additionally you see one in the cantina in a new hope so clearly some chose to go off world as well making this even harder to justify. Although it is the empire so I doubt they cared.

    07:50 The rurians feared the metamorphosis because the adults of the species were nonsentient. What came out of the cocoon was an unintelligent insect. Horribly, many of them still had fragments of their memories left. In the extended universe ("Legends") Han Solo returned to visit a rurian friend, only to find he had metamorphosed. He was delighted, however, that one of the adults kept landing near him and waving his wings at Han.
