  • The Twi'lek species would go from one of countless isolated species in the Outer Rim, to one of the most popular species in the entire galaxy. See how the Twi'lek found their place in the galactic economy. One of the longest and saddest story of any Star Wars species. See how the ancient Rakatan Infinite Empire may have helped create the vast diversity we see in the Twileks today, and how the Hutt Cartel, Old Republic and Clone Wars era governments all kept this species down.

In regards to their extreme variations of colors and patterns, it could very well be just be the fact that they're naturally predisposed to variation on a genetic level. irl there's a snake species called the variable kingsnake, which even without selective breeding will produce clutches of babies that all come out with wildly different colors and patterns, including ones that look nothing like either of their parents

One theory I have to explain the differences in Twi'lek biology is that it's down to thousands years of crossbreeding with humans and other races. With the majority of Twi'leks going off-world being female, people taking note they can reproduce with other species and the sheer timescales we're talking about I believe that a good number of Twi'leks, mostly off world but some on Ryloth, have alien (to them) genes. This leads each of them to have slightly different appearances depending on their ancestry.

    • @A_Black_Sheep94
      @A_Black_Sheep94 2 ปีที่แล้ว +28

Not to mention what region of Ryloth a particular Twi'lek came from originally. Northerns could be blue for example and after generations of breeding together it just became random

So clearly the real reason for the huge variations between twileks is just because of lack of attention to detail between different writers/artists throughout star wars history. But I think the original problem stems from the original two twileks, Oola and Bib Fortuna. I feel like they weren't original intended to be the same species, because aside from the head tails they have nothing in common

I can completely understand the Twi'lek's decision after first contact. Ryloth was a death trap. I think more than anything the initial Twi'lek slaves were sold for a chance at living in a place where they wouldn't fear death at every corner. The philosophy that they could find their place as slaves and live better lives than they would on Ryloth makes great sense. It wasn't until the spice trade really picked up that the bigger problems started. Slavery and drug addiction is a far worse combination than either on their own multiplying the leverage an overlord can have against a group of people.
There is also the argument that the gamble paid off. Considering that according to your video Twi'leks are the second most numerous species across the galaxy. They survived and thrived almost as much as humans. The ancient twi'leks won. Prostitution, dancing, service industry. Depending on the culture it might not be a universal evil. Historically it was often an easy way for women without a husband to survive and thrive by themselves.
Doesn't mean that Ryloth and Twi'leks didn't get exploited but compared to surviving on Ryloth and maybe dying out without Republic intervention is not that hard to argue for. It's a big game of what ifs in my opinion. Would the Twi'leks have been killed by anything from heat storms to the wild life or would they have been able to survive without selling themselves or their children as slaves? Who the flip knows. Not all species can be Togrutas.

It might be possible that the twi’lek were simply modified by the Rakatans to be capable of interbreeding with other species, as well as attractive through the use of universally enticing hormones. Perhaps their thought process was that if they couldn’t be force sensitive as pure Rakatans, they could regain that sensitivity by breeding with those who were.

You know, I'm actually shocked that the empire gave ryloth more freedom than the republic, kinda weird. Sure, it wasn't much, but it was more freedom, it's kinda weird. I mean sure, the rebels were the best for them, but the empire was better than the repubic.

One of the reasons the Republic fell was its corruption. Palpatine was able to control a big part of the Senate through corruption, and there were worlds were the end of the Republic did improve the situation.
I remember the old Star Wars D6 RPG (not canon any more) mentioning how the Empire was very tough on the corruption of its own military officers and other administrative execs.

tbh the story of Ryloth makes me agree with Star Trek about the Federation's Prime Directive: absolutely no interaction with pre-space travel societies. So much of the Twi'leks' entire history is dominated by exploitation because the Republic dropped down on a society still reliant on windmills and started introducing stuff like inter-planetary travel and the galactic slave trade.

This has got to be among the most comprehensive treatments of these folks I've seen. Well-done.
(As for the question, I basically don't see the Twi'leks as being the ones with a whole lot of options on first contact with a vast, technologically-superior galactic civilization. Even if they said 'no' and the Republic respected that, someone else would surely find them and be less 'nice' about it anyway. Really it's the Republic that could have found other options. )

Thus Orn Free Taa would be one of the most eligable Twi'leks around (deapite his obvious shourtcommings regarding intellect)

Man! This is a really great video. It gave a lot of back ground about the Twilek people I did not know. You went way beyond what I got from the movies and even The Clone Wars.
Bib Fortuna was one of my favorite aliens from Star Wars. The Teilek looked more alien than a lot of the action figures other than Hammer Head. I always wished there were more Twilek figures to play with. It was not until I was older and not playing with toys that more came out staring with the Jabba Palace dancing girls.
My favorite were Bib Fortuna, Hammer Head, The Cantina Band, Nim Numb.
More often than not they as a group would be my heros or bad guys group in a play situation.
Can you do a video like this about the people Hammer Head comes from?

Maybe the Twileks were heavily genetically modified from their progenitor species. The Twileks (before the Rakatans got to them) may have been quite disimilar from the "after Rakata" species. The modified species out reproduced the originals.
What they were like before is lost to history.

This is possibly one of the most underrated and underutilized Star Wars alien races. I actually like this alien race in Star Wars my favorite wish you could play as them. More often in the games I bought some of the few games that let. You not only play as one but customize the color (Talking about you Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy.) Which had bad controls and gave up because I couldn't put myself through the torture. Of bad clunky movement and hit detection with not just firearms but the lightsaber as well. I eventually broke down and bought Force Unleashed and typed in the codes Aayla and Secura. Both codes unlock Aayla Secura and the green Twilek bounty hunter in Force Unleashed. It's a shame there isn't a Bethesda style Star Wars open world RPG that let's you customize characters race and appearance along with how you want to play. Be it armor and firearms or robes and lightsaber. I'd buy it no questions asked along with a really good Boba Fett game.
