- The Twi'lek species would go from one of countless isolated species in the Outer Rim, to one of the most popular species in the entire galaxy. See how the Twi'lek found their place in the galactic economy. One of the longest and saddest story of any Star Wars species. See how the ancient Rakatan Infinite Empire may have helped create the vast diversity we see in the Twileks today, and how the Hutt Cartel, Old Republic and Clone Wars era governments all kept this species down.

Sith species?! Oh boy.
but no google results for "why are twi'lek women in particular sexualized even above the zeltron?" 🤔 see comments below 😥
That's a shocking revelation, the only commodity this species had were their children. But, in gaining technology for better enslavement of their own people. Have they doomed themselves to extinction?
Thank you so much for this video, it helped a lot while i was creating my cosplay for my oc twi'lek on my channel!
Awesome coverage of Twil'eks. Thought I knew a thing or two on them before I saw this. Covered everything from species origin to first society building, clan systems, politics , physical attributes, biology, philosophy to general mentality. Well done 👍
"From Thrawn, we learn Twi'Leks are hotter than any other humanoid." *We didn't need Thrawn for that*
He probably had a lot of them to "admire artwork"
i will see your twi'lek and raise you a zeltron
Still though, it confirms his status as a true man of culture
But it's nice to know Thrawn had a pulse?

@@jasonbender2459 oh no
In regards to their extreme variations of colors and patterns, it could very well be just be the fact that they're naturally predisposed to variation on a genetic level. irl there's a snake species called the variable kingsnake, which even without selective breeding will produce clutches of babies that all come out with wildly different colors and patterns, including ones that look nothing like either of their parents
Thanks for this, this is really cool I never knew that and makes sense for them
This might also explain why they're capable of having children with Humans, and also why human-twi'lek hybrids vary so much
One theory I have to explain the differences in Twi'lek biology is that it's down to thousands years of crossbreeding with humans and other races. With the majority of Twi'leks going off-world being female, people taking note they can reproduce with other species and the sheer timescales we're talking about I believe that a good number of Twi'leks, mostly off world but some on Ryloth, have alien (to them) genes. This leads each of them to have slightly different appearances depending on their ancestry.
Not to mention what region of Ryloth a particular Twi'lek came from originally. Northerns could be blue for example and after generations of breeding together it just became random
This right here is why I love the Star Wars universe. It's truly a living, breathing thing. There's a backstory for nearly every species and every individual. Even the "death sticks" guy has a backstory! I love Star Wars

The Google answer to "Why are Twi'leks so attractive?" didn't mention their vibrant colors. I think that's a major part of their fame. They wouldn't be so iconic with just normal human skin colour, I think.
I agree 👍 I think the reason we don't mention color is because it was so obvious to us that our brain forgot about it.
Like how if we Google what human need for survival we mention firemaking kit, tent, rope or hunting knife and not oxygen
They just got them dumpys tho

@@DefinitelyNotEmma yeah
No wonder there's lots of Rule 34 about those species
How interesting
So clearly the real reason for the huge variations between twileks is just because of lack of attention to detail between different writers/artists throughout star wars history. But I think the original problem stems from the original two twileks, Oola and Bib Fortuna. I feel like they weren't original intended to be the same species, because aside from the head tails they have nothing in common
@@night6724 that is an awesome statement/question, imo.
Stuff like this always makes me laugh when I see people cry about “breaking canon” canon in Star Wars has never been consistent even a bit
I've always assumed they were the same species, but the males looked different from the females. There are a lot of species of animals where the males look drastically different from the females. You're probably right though, they probably intended for them to be different species
Yeah that would explain why the males have ears and the females have those cones, which is a really weird difference to have.
I never knew bib was a twilek until just now
Not all twi'lek females have the cone ears. That was actually somebody introduced much later for some odd reason.
Perhaps that was due to Human/Twilek hybrids or genetic mixing?
I have return of the jedi on VHS. The female dancer and the ones in the back ground have cone ears.
@@logannichols5848 that's part of the headdress. No other female twilek appears in the movie until 1997 special edition.
Which brings me to the thought that non-coan eared females Twi'leks and male/female twi's with body hair are likely hybrid with other species
I thought the 'cone ears' was part of their headpiece to cover up their ears?

Darth Talon was, is and will be always the supreme Star Wars waifu. And think we could have watched her in the sequels as Darth Maul's apprentice...
She is 10/10 waifu
Her understanding of the force is probably better than Maul's considering he was trained mostly as an assassin whereas she was a true Sith apprentice.

Togrutas too
I can completely understand the Twi'lek's decision after first contact. Ryloth was a death trap. I think more than anything the initial Twi'lek slaves were sold for a chance at living in a place where they wouldn't fear death at every corner. The philosophy that they could find their place as slaves and live better lives than they would on Ryloth makes great sense. It wasn't until the spice trade really picked up that the bigger problems started. Slavery and drug addiction is a far worse combination than either on their own multiplying the leverage an overlord can have against a group of people.
There is also the argument that the gamble paid off. Considering that according to your video Twi'leks are the second most numerous species across the galaxy. They survived and thrived almost as much as humans. The ancient twi'leks won. Prostitution, dancing, service industry. Depending on the culture it might not be a universal evil. Historically it was often an easy way for women without a husband to survive and thrive by themselves.
Doesn't mean that Ryloth and Twi'leks didn't get exploited but compared to surviving on Ryloth and maybe dying out without Republic intervention is not that hard to argue for. It's a big game of what ifs in my opinion. Would the Twi'leks have been killed by anything from heat storms to the wild life or would they have been able to survive without selling themselves or their children as slaves? Who the flip knows. Not all species can be Togrutas.
My theory on why they have different colors, male birds have bright colors to attract potential mates. So in theory they use their skin colors to get the attention of someone whom they have romantic feelings for.
a possible theory but perhaps we can attribute this more to a zebra with no one zebra having the same pattern as another
Probably originally started with whatever region the Twi'lek was from and after millenia of inbreeding it came to the point anyone could come out any color.
Birds all have the same color skin. Feathers are what is colored on birds.
I still can't get over the fact that Earth's drugs usually come from plant compounds, whereas in Star Wars people just snorting distilled spider shit like there's no tomorrow.
I mean 'drugs' are just any chemical that alters your brain chemistry. I think the only difference between poison, industrial chemicals, and narcotics is the dosage.
Twi'leks have a very dark history, but their biology's just amazing. Every alien species biology is amazing in this universe. ^^
How about a video on the Mirialans, my favorite alien species in Star Wars? :)

@@subninja8069 oh yeah, blue waifus, I can dig that.
It might be possible that the twi’lek were simply modified by the Rakatans to be capable of interbreeding with other species, as well as attractive through the use of universally enticing hormones. Perhaps their thought process was that if they couldn’t be force sensitive as pure Rakatans, they could regain that sensitivity by breeding with those who were.
Wow, the fact that there’s lore on what tail movements mean what things is really amazing
I love you Vette Star Wars the old republic Sith Warrior

I really like that you list your sources. Other channels don't do this, it gives me a nice guide to see if there's a book I missed.
This has got to be among the most comprehensive treatments of these folks I've seen. Well-done.
(As for the question, I basically don't see the Twi'leks as being the ones with a whole lot of options on first contact with a vast, technologically-superior galactic civilization. Even if they said 'no' and the Republic respected that, someone else would surely find them and be less 'nice' about it anyway. Really it's the Republic that could have found other options. )
tbh the story of Ryloth makes me agree with Star Trek about the Federation's Prime Directive: absolutely no interaction with pre-space travel societies. So much of the Twi'leks' entire history is dominated by exploitation because the Republic dropped down on a society still reliant on windmills and started introducing stuff like inter-planetary travel and the galactic slave trade.
You know, I'm actually shocked that the empire gave ryloth more freedom than the republic, kinda weird. Sure, it wasn't much, but it was more freedom, it's kinda weird. I mean sure, the rebels were the best for them, but the empire was better than the repubic.
The empire was born of the republic’s failures, Ryloth was a prime example of this.
One of the reasons the Republic fell was its corruption. Palpatine was able to control a big part of the Senate through corruption, and there were worlds were the end of the Republic did improve the situation.
I remember the old Star Wars D6 RPG (not canon any more) mentioning how the Empire was very tough on the corruption of its own military officers and other administrative execs.
"What is important about lekku is that they are prehensile, meaning they can grab things."
I think we all know where this is going...
You cannot beat an "old fashioned" from a twileks lekku.
The intergalactic cure for blue balls.
Aye!!!!
Twi’leks are literally my favorite as of late, and I’m glad I’m not the only one who is quite fascinated with the race in particular.
Hera Syndulla is one such example that made me love the species ever more due to their huge history in the wars, and the beauty of them is intriguing as hell.
I just recently created a Twi'lek oc of my own, so this actually helps me with planning her backstory :)
Same except I made her a jedi lol
When I first saw the Twi'lek Species, I assumed the reason most of the characters were female is because the race naturally had significantly more females than males.
Just screentime.
It would make sense. More women lets the species reproduce more, and even just sociologically, females would be more valued since they can be sold. Something like what happened under China's One Child Policy, except in reverse.
Did you not see Jabba's lacky?

Afaik I know Twi'leks seem to become overweight pretty easy because their homeworld doesnt provide much nurishment (they cant afford to waste much). Thus overweight Twi'leks were seen as desireable, because they had abundant food.
Thus Orn Free Taa would be one of the most eligable Twi'leks around (deapite his obvious shourtcommings regarding intellect)

"The Spice must flow" -a common saying
You know that there thousands of clubs and bars that catered to female imperial officers that where staffed by male twileks and togrutas during the empire's rain.
now I'm just imagining robotchicken Palpatine saying something like:
"you know what we need in this galaxy? equal employment! like if you look at all the Twi'lek women they mostly get employment from their bodies at clubs but what do the men have to work with? I say we make a custom for the male Twi'leks to have equal or similar employment opportunities, after all if I'm gonna rule the galaxy I need to be better than the old republic and all they did for the galaxy!"

This is possibly one of the most underrated and underutilized Star Wars alien races. I actually like this alien race in Star Wars my favorite wish you could play as them. More often in the games I bought some of the few games that let. You not only play as one but customize the color (Talking about you Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy.) Which had bad controls and gave up because I couldn't put myself through the torture. Of bad clunky movement and hit detection with not just firearms but the lightsaber as well. I eventually broke down and bought Force Unleashed and typed in the codes Aayla and Secura. Both codes unlock Aayla Secura and the green Twilek bounty hunter in Force Unleashed. It's a shame there isn't a Bethesda style Star Wars open world RPG that let's you customize characters race and appearance along with how you want to play. Be it armor and firearms or robes and lightsaber. I'd buy it no questions asked along with a really good Boba Fett game.

The fandom's sexual attraction to the original depiction of Twi'leks as slaves....namely Oola, has definitely had a huge impact on the franchise's treatment of this species. I'm glad that they've recently been written as not just a passive species who benefited from their own slavery or voluntarily sold themselves off.
Twi'lek history: a prime example as to why technology must always advance.
i like that disney finally incorporated them in the mandalorian and now book of boba fett. i felt like they were missing in the force awakens saga
I'm not a big sci-fan, but I'm addicted to these vids. I just can't believe people go so deep into these stories.
I literally searched the entire internet trying to figure out if there were no twi'leks and only part twi'leks because I thought male twi'leks didn't exist. I completely forgot about things like the mandalorian and rebels lmfao.
Maybe the Twileks were heavily genetically modified from their progenitor species. The Twileks (before the Rakatans got to them) may have been quite disimilar from the "after Rakata" species. The modified species out reproduced the originals.
What they were like before is lost to history.
Or just not created yet.
Thanks for the break down!😊

Twileks are amazing. Great history
Probably the most varied species in Star Wars, mainly because small differences during film and show productions made nerds try to justify them into the lore
They had very little to no options.
If they refused to sell their people; then they would've been taken by force and in that case could've been worse since some families didn't participate in doing that. I thought bib fortuna idea had some merit to it but again you would have to sacrifice your people for that plan to workout. But great video well put together as always. You have to wonder how the Twi'lek themselves viewed their two sexes. Were women who bore a lot of female children considered valuable because they produced children that could then be sold off-world? And were sons considered less valuable because they weren't as desired for the slave trade? Perhaps they had some kind of proverb that went something like this; "A man who has many sons is rich with future workers, but a man with many daughters is wealthy in every way."!
I feel like I’m missing a heap of information from the comics you show in the video. Nice breakdown 😀

A type of chaste Julius Caeser-Tecumseh figure who would use a mixture of cleverness, charisma, ruthlessness, and idealism to achieve his goals, as one who would embody all the complaints that fans would have towards Star Wars' treatment of the Twi'leks. The Twi'leks need a savior and a champion for their rights, and the writers of Star Wars should make one that isn't a Jedi or a Sith.
