Actually, that's my fault. I recorded the first session using a microphone on the desk near Gabe. The second session, I was unable to get close to Gabe, so I had to record using a camera-mounted shotgun microphone 30 ft away, which picked up a lot more of the audience. Indeed, the reason you can hear Gabe so well is because the audience WAS respectful.
These guys are thinking way bigger picture than any of their competition. It's kind of astounding how far ahead they are of companies like EA or Microsoft. Like two orders of magnitude.
EA yes, Microsoft maybe. I mean, Microsoft loves to think long term too (if you ever see some of the presentations given by Microsoft employees) and in the hardware sector you can see Nvidia thinking 15-20 years in the future of hardware and giving talks on how to get around the limitation of Moore's Law (once transistors become the size of atoms) which won't happen for a while now.
I love Gabe Newell. That being said, did anyone else find it really funny/ironic that, after he talks about the possibility of Apple getting into the living room before PCs as a threat, he picks up an iPad at 7:21?
If Valve were the only ones doing digital distro, your argument would hold more weight. As it is, we can look at things like iTunes. Apple pushed the publishers. They refused to permit them things like bundling albums, charging more than 99 cents a track, etc. Some publishers resisted, but eventually caved. And it gave them a great market. As it is with Steam, might as well roll your own as Steam doesn't offer things publishers would have a hard time getting their own org to do.
Gabe is a genius, there's no two ways about it. He understands where business is going, and makes it happen. I remain perplexed, however, that Valve provides NO pressure on game publishers to adapt to this. Steam should require game licenses to be transferrable and saleable. They should get rid of the 'preloading' nonsense and release games when they are done, not when retailers can get them on shelves. Unless they do things like that, every publisher will just roll their own digital distro.
Applying pressure can have unforeseen consequences. There's no need to try and force things. It seems like Valve's/Gaben's strategy is just to get behind the open/voluntary ethos because they know it wins out eventually and accelerate the process. Forcing/constraining runs counter to the ethos.
So if a Steam user makes there own store, won't we have a bunch of real shitty looking pages (via Myspace) with tons of bling everywhere? TThere would need to be a standardization as to the design to these stores for sure.
If Valve attempts to push against publishers, the publishers will shove back. How is this a bad thing? Currently established publishers have 'Connections': Rich family and powerful legal associates whom currently own these publishers as investments in the 'video game industry'. If Valve (who has no Connections) tries to force things, then the Big Black Book will get pulled out, and suddenly Valve will be attacked in unorthodox fashions, since the normal ways won't work anyways on Valve.
Are you kidding me. Gabe said that it's unlikely that Bigfoot gets released this year. And Steambox is a name that a journalist has pulled out of his ass. Piston is the Mini PC from Xi3 and Bigfoot the one from Valve. And it wouldn't make sense, because the Mini-PCs are an alternative to the Gaming PC, so no, there won't be any new feature like that for HL3.
7:46 IT is now set in stone, when WoW dies SC3 is out. So Valve and Blizzard time is interchangeable. 1 carried the 2 over 6 equals 2034 is when support ends for WoW EG servers shut down.
this interview looks so uncomfortable and awkward. his chair has no table infront of it, so he's just standing there far away from everybody so they can see every body movement like his toes moving. and there's nothing but fucking coughing and sneezing. and the acoustics are impractically echoy. and the lighting is making sure we can all see his forehead and nothing else.
Perhaps, but him buying an iPad isn't enough to change giant branching swathes of human behaviour which are making Apple rich. If he finds it a useful tool then he may as well use it. And really, if I can be so bold as to put words in Gabe's mouth, he's probably not so much "worried" as acknowledging that they have the influence and power to move things in a very different direction which he hasn't anticipated.
No third session? Go figure.
the next session will be in VR.

I could just listen to Gabe talking all day long.

Still holds true today
doesn't take much to be more popular than any of those two examples considering the downright evil things they do to their customers
Thanks for the upload.
Thank you for the video. Was a very interesting watch.
Loved the first question.
2013: "Starcraft 3.. or something"
2020: Still no new Starcraft
He did it again. In exactly the same anecdote he called Battlefury a "Blade fury".
Ah that makes sense, I listened to these on two separate occasions and I assumed they were the same camera source.

I agree with that statement.

He is so damn smart.

My theory is that HL3 is done, but he's waiting on Steam Box or some other technology to finish so he can implement the new feature into HL3.
