Marvel's Secret Invasion had so much promise. It adapted a beloved comic book, had a stellar cast, a great team--so what the hell happened to this show? in this video, we break down all of the real-world reasons that caused the show to fall apart, and explain where the Marvel Cinematic Universe goes from here.

Secret Invasion was…not great. All throughout the show, I was rooting for it. I thought it started off strong and then went downhill so fast-even getting a 13% rotten tomatoes rating-by far the worst for Marvel. So I’m going to explain exactly what went wrong with this show-the behind-the-scenes problems that plagued it, the state of marvel going forward-and why this show was the greatest disappointment ever in the MCU.
Doug: Biggest disappointment ever? Geez that seems like an exaggeration.
Well Doug, let me take you back to 2003, to the movie X2: X-Men united. Superhero movies were mostly missed until this point-the year before we had raimi spider-man, and this movie finally got the X-Men 100% right. Jean Gray had just died sacrificing herself for the X-men, and just before the credits, we got this tease [clip].
That was teasing the dark phoenix saga-one of the greatest all time comics stories ever that comic fans never thought we’d get to see on the big screen. And when X-men 3 came out 3 years later, what we got was a low-budget, half assed interpretation of this epic story. That’s how secret invasion made me feel.
Doug: But it's not fair to compare the show to the comic book.
You’re right-so I’m going to avoid comparing this show to the events of the comic. The comic was this sprawling crossover event filled with superheroes-but the show adapts a small part of the comic, where Nick Fury goes off on hisnown to root out skrulls. So I will compare this show to those comics, where it’s appropriate.,
The secret invasion director Ali Selim, even said to Variety: “Marvel has a very devoted - even rabid - fan base who have expectations and when their expectations aren’t fulfilled, they move in the other direction' they give it a thumbs down...is it our job to fulfill their expectations?"
Look man, if you made a bad show, don't blame fans for saying it's a bad show., But, as I’ll prove throughout this video, the show is not bad because of this director. There was a confluence of events that hampered Secret INvasion, which made it almost impossible to tell a compelling story. But before we can explain what went wrong behind the scenes, we have to talk about what was actually wrong with the show.
And there was a lot wrong with this show-ain't is a failure. Now I don't use that word often-I love MCU stories, and this one has to rank near the bottom of anyone’s l'ist-but the worst MCU show is still better than most TV shows. And the secret invasion was miles ahead of the Inhumans or Helstrom.
But this show might have been doomed to fail, because the premise of the show was flawed from the start. The MCU was not in the right place to tell the story of a secret invasion.
So Back to secret INvasion-I think the context behind the show was flawed from the start. This is one of those times when I have to compare this story to the comics, and to show why maybe this adaptation wasn't right for the MCU/. in the comics, the skrulls have been villains since Fantastic Four number 2. Some skrulls are good guys, but comic readers generally accept that the skrulls are villains.
So, when a Secret INvasion crossover was announced, we understood what it meant-the skrulls were about to hatch the villainous plan they’d been building up toward since 1961. But in the MCU, the movie captain marvel went for this reversal to make the skrulls good guys. [straw drink]. Now for the movie and for Carol's character development, this was a great choice. It showed Carol that she had been fed lies about the war, made her question her identity, and humanized refugees.

Well, it is our fault we don’t like it, technically, but that doesn’t mean anything. Both things are true: the show is legitimately bad, and it is our fault we don’t like it. The director could have even more audacity and blame the studio, because ultimately, it’s the studio that doesn’t respect the fans, not the director. The director did the best they could with what they had. The director is just a pawn as much as the audience is.
Seriously though, fans demanding respect as though they own the franchise need to look in the mirror. Nothing will please every fan. Franchises don’t belong to the audiences. The creators can do what they like. Don’t like, don’t watch, don’t whine.

So stop blaming fans for not liking something, as long as fans aren't attacking people involved it's all justified. People don't get praise for their efforts, they get for their results. M night shyamalan put efforts in Air bender live action as well, or Velma had efforts put into it as well, but it's not fans fault they hate them, it's fucking studios fault that it's bad then it's directors fault for accepting the studios unreasonable demands.
Edgar Wright spent ears on an ant man movie, but even after that when the studio started making unreasonable demands, he left the project due to creative difference and i respect him for not compromising, shows integrity.

I still remember the soul crushing feeling when they announced secret invasion was going to be a D+ show. Just by saying that, I knew it was going to be a cheap-feeling, dumbed down version of what the skrull invasion was. Even with that in mind, I really didn't expect to be as bad as it was though.
Also in the secret invasion comics, IMO, had Maria Hill finally doing cool stuff. They showed her being just as capable and steps ahead like Nick Fury. Throughout her MCU appearances she has been criminally underused, and she never did anything that showcased what a total BA her comic counter-part is. I was thinking "could secret invasion tv series finally be the moment they give her cool stuff to do?!"...Nope just killed off quick.
Even though I knew I would be disappointed by this show, I still didn't realize how bad it was going to be.

Having random skrulls say "he loves you" leading into the reveal of the zealot faction, symbols of Kly'bn all over, etc. It not only would have made for a great rational motivation, but given the show a relevant modern topic to build a theme upon. I had zero expectations going in, loved episode 2, really like several characters, and I really liked the last scene between Fury and his wife. There was something very moving - for me - about whatever her name was reverting to her natural form and the two of them kissing and embracing - especially after the earlier poem scenes. I also really, really like the British woman/spymaster. Great actor, great character.
But sure, lots of head-scratching choices. I hated what happened to Maria Hill, hated that they killed off Talos, and wished the Fury/Gravic conversation in the last episode had actually been with Fury. But then, if they’d had that conversation at the beginning of the series, it would (or should) have undermined the entire plot.

Bill Simmons, Exec Producer of the initial run of ESPN'd "30 for 30" documentaries, plus a bunch of other docs for HBO recently said that there's nothing worse than seeing a really good idea for a documentary done poorly, because not only is the doc bad, but it burns anyone else from touching the topic for a decade or so. The biggest problem with this show is that Marvel burned one of their best trump cards and didn't even take the hand. Now the idea is finished and can' be done in the MCU again. The Opportunity Cost is the biggest problem.

Many have gone in-depth as to WHY the writing is bad. And why it's been bad in ever single other Disney+ Marvel show as well.
This isn't really much worse written than the others, it's probably middle of the pack in that regard, people just noticed this time for some reason. I think the luster is wearing off.

    • @fyngolnoldor4891
      @fyngolnoldor4891 ปีที่แล้ว +14

Have you tried, idk, analyzing it yourself and coming to your own conclusions? Do you always need someone else to formulate your ideas for you?
Ryan's analysis is in fact quite bad because he lets the writers off the hook and blames it all on MCU reshoots when he doesn't even know what or how much of the show was reshot exactly.
This review also doesn't point out that the Fury in this show is portrayed as broken and wanting to give up which is THE EXACT OPPOSITE of the Nick Fury we know. Fury gets berated by Olivia Colman's character for losing faith upon finding out there's always a bigger, badder villain out there more powerful than Fury. This would NEVER break Fury because Fury has ALWAYS been the one fighting against the odds and that is EXACTLY why he made the Avengers, a team of superpowered beings to take on the fights Fury himself can't as a human.
Then there's the standard Disney progressive bullshit where they YET AGAIN take male leads and basically replace them with younger, more competent female leads (e.g. Fury replaced by Olivia Colman's character, Talos replaced by G'iah). They do some version of this in pretty much every Disney+ show post-Wandavision.
Other writing problems are that in a world where Skrulls impersonate people at will there almost never is any checking that various characters are actually human and not Skrull. Olivia Colman's character does it once by shooting her MI6 superior to reveal that he's not human (something which could have been done in the hospital scene with Ritsen, Rhodes, Fury and Olivia Colman's character). Outside of that, there are no tests performed, no devices invented to detect Skrulls, etc. Despite knowing about Skrulls, neither Fury, nor the US or UK governments (both of which know about them) inform anyone else, which allows Skrulls to impersonate people freely without worrying that they will be detected.
Then there's the power level of the Skrulls that fluctuates wildy. Based on the Captain Marvel movie Skrulls aren't shown to be stronger than humans, they just are able to look copy human looks. In Secret Invasion they somehow have superhuman strength, such that Talos frequently performs feats of strength (breaking down doors, chains, etc.). Then they do this with the Super Skrulls too: Gravik has the super healing of Extremis and we see how easily he heals from being shot in the face by Fury (just like G'iah does later when shot by Gravik) but then, in the final battle, G'iah shoots a hole through Gravik who now dies, for some reason not being able to heal himself anymore despite having the powers of multiple Avengers and supervillains. Sure...why not...

At first, I thought Captain Marvel 2 (or The Marvels) was gonna adapt the Secret Invasion storyline since Carol has history with them. But, clearly, Marvel has other plans for these stories. And while I enjoyed the first 5 episodes, the season finale didn’t really stick the landing. Super Skrull fight is cool and all, but it felt like a rush to get to the finish line just so Marvel can move on to other projects. There wasn’t even a post-credits scene; it just ended. That’s it. Best way to do SI would be a 45-60 min episode centered on Fury, released after each full length movie (which would each also have hints to SI). This way it could be well planned and integrated with the films while still being a Fury based arc. You could do far better CGI with the extra production time. If there would be 6 films in phase 5 you could do 7 eps of SI interspersed and released on D+. Imagine introducing Fury’s wife in a scene in the next Captain America, followed up a couple weeks later with a flashback ep telling their story. Or have an ep about finding them a home, then place Captain Marvel in deep space looking for a new planet for the Skrulls at the beginning of the Marvels. It could’ve been so much better!

Maybe Giah could have gone to deal with Rhodey.. and all 3 celebrated together or 4 with Olivia Coleman. The 4 of them grabbing a drink at a pub would have been hilarious. Then varra comes in and makes up with Fury there. The president could still have been the ass he was and declared war on the skrulls.. I wanted to love this show. There’s one area where this show may have been the best in the MCU, the dialogue. They cast some GREAT actors that gave some intense conversations. Rhodey and Fury, Talos and Fury, Mr. and Mrs. Fury, Gravik’s monologues, any scene with Sonya Falsworth. The writers REALLY gave inspired dialogue scenes. That’s what hooked me. I really feel like those are what elevates this show from dumpster juice to just disappointing. But in every other area you’re right.
It’s funny that the pup used the “you can’t compare MCU adaptations to the comics” argument I’ve used myself concerning this show. But on second thought, that’s why IF the MCU decided to use the Secret Invasion title, it should’ve been an Avenger’s movie. It still couldn’t live up to the comic scale, but neither did The Infinity Saga or Civil War, and not too many people bring that up because those films still made the scale and stakes high ENOUGH to satisfy us. I think this show would’ve digested much better if it was called something else and sold as a prologue to the REAL Secret Invasion.
Nick Fury was cool enough in some scenes especially when SLJ was allowed to bring a little Jules energy to his interrogations. But in many ways, he was out-cooled often in his own show by other characters. Talos was the “heart” of it in many ways. Sonya was the cold, ruthless spy Nick was supposed to be, and Ga’ah ended up being the “muscle”. It feels like Nick was just there to have a bright idea every now and then while the rest of the cast constantly reminds us why he’s really not all that cool with a bit of douchebaggery in his past. I really wanted this show to be in my top 3, but it ended up in my bottom 3.

Something that annoyed me was how they made “the blip” the canonical term for the thanos snap passage, where every disappeared and reappeared years later. I don’t know if this event was in the comics and actually called that, but from how the movie universe made it, it was made to sound like a one-off joke, with far from home having it first name it as a throw away gag, but now it seems they’re taking it as the actual name. Of all names to stick with, they chose “the blip”, it sounds too goofy to be used in a serious manner, characters having a serious conversation, then suddenly say “blip” like it isn’t a weird thing to say.
Why not officially call it something else later on, like the event, the snap, the greatest loss in marvel’s history, something that doesn’t sound like it literally was made up bu a bunch of highschoolers.

Where did they get Frost Giant DNA? How does Giah know how to use Mantis powers? If Carol Danvers is the strongest in the MCU, Why would either fighter waste time with a Drax arm? How are they able to control their anger enough to not completely Hulk out? Does Gamora have powers? Was Ghost present at End Game? Why does the harvest transfer rings and tattoos? Wouldn't Carol Danvers or The Guardians be much better suited to find the Skrulls a home? If the entire Skrull population is already on Earth, do they really need a home?
Once they assume an identity, why do they keep the original person alive? One million host bodies to care for must be a huge responsibility.

I actually liked this show. I didn’t think too hard about the Rhodey thing. He has a life long injury..he probably has to go to the doctors for check ups, so they could have taken him at anytime simply during a doctors appointment. If they change into an Avenger at anytime wouldn’t the real ones be aware of another them walking around? They’d have to get an Avenger in a fight one on one with a Skrull (the did it with War Machine easily) and be incapacitated and tucked away, so it’s not smart to call any one of them in. I doubt Sam Wilson, Clint Barton, or Peter Quil could take on a Skrull one on one. The ONLY thing I’m pissed about was Talos’ death.. but that’s because I have a crush on Ben Mendelsohn and want to see him on my screen as much as possible 😂

Giah is a cool new character- saw the ending coming when she was revealed as a super skrull too. Kevin went for a spectacular ending, but went too far overboard with giving the 2 skrulls the powers of almost every character in the mcu. Though i think its a sneaky way to keep all the powers in play if the actors leave.

Good analysis Ryan, although Falsworth is NOT Umbridge. Umbridge was actually evil. Falsworth believes ends justify the means but she actually is not evil. Note: if she’s MEANT to be evil, why is she helping Nick?
Where do we go from here? As you said, on paper, it’s got some good points. So I’m going to relish some great character moments and hope that some of the bad story elements are swept away.
    Great character moments:
    1) Everything with Falsworth - we need her back.
    2) Fury & Varra - that ‘beloved’ was gorgeous
    Story points to keep:
    1) Rhodey/ Everett Ross were Skulls for a while. As it’s left open, I’m going to say post End-Game for Rhodey (based on brace wearing). Ross needs to be post Wakanda Forever because Skrulls helping Wakanda makes no sense.
    2) Fury fathered the Harvest and his stash is now gone. Perfect Batman move. But the DNA lying around is all you need is NOPE.
    3) G’iah is a Super Skrull. But she’s gonna need some limitations
    4) President declaring open season on aliens. That’s stupid and realistic. Fix by end of this era.
    Plot points to fix:
    1) All you need is superhero DNA - we need that has to be limited. G’iah can’t be sustained at he lower level
    2) The needless death of Maria Hill. That was pointless and beneath the character. If you can’t fix this, we need to have see Nick deal with the emotional fallout - because he didn’t need the motivation for SI. But perhaps we can get some character growth out of it. Which, obvious fridging= lazy but we need value out of it if we can’t put that genie back in the bottle.
At the end of the day, we’re going to need a Secret Invasion recap at some point that fixes the worst of it and moves us past this.

I really disagree with the people who are angry at Maria HIll being killed. Yes, I loved her character and it was sad to see her go. But her dying made the threat of the Skrulls real and made Fury more alone. The story wouldn't have worked as well if he had a sidekick he could trust with him the whole way. Killing Maria Hill advanced the story in an important way.
Also, Falsworth might be trying to do good, but she tortures and kills like an evil person. At best, she has grey morality.

    - Skrulls can't tell when other Skrulls are around?
    - how did they get DNA from people that weren't at the battle (Abomination and Ghost) and from people that were dusted (Thanos and his friends)?

Is funny how they emphasize how Giah plan to trick Gravik was STUPID, when if anything it was the best use of a Skrull ability to disguise themself so far, it would make no sence for Fury to face Gravik himself since he is no match (and he is no Batman) so send Giah to trick him into turning her into a Super Skrull was clever, especially because it shows what a trickster is supose to do, trick their oponent, so she presenting Fury as weak, defeated, non threatening and slowly diying while positioning herself in the right place and leting Gravik think he got what he whanted and that he is in control was CLEVER, the ensuing fight was a gamble in her part and the same CGI fight between two guys with the same power set that is so common in superhero movies but still the more exiting part of the episode considering that the rest was boring.

My dude, making a root canal longer doesn't make it less painful. This wasn't forced to be six short episodes, they had more footage they threw out to MAKE it shorter than it was. And it's still paced overwhelmingly at glacial speed. The length isn't the problem. The problem was it was written and directed by people with no talent who didn't give a fuck.

    • @laurameakin
      @laurameakin ปีที่แล้ว

So Disney know if they keep the episode length down per season that’s less writers working on the show it’s one thing the WGA are currently fighting against. It’s a thing more episodes mean more writers. It also means new upcoming writers get less chance to learn from from more seasoned writers because these mini rooms that are now running don’t allow for that learning process. Studios also want to have “interns on set” as opposed to writers on set which means anyone can edit scripts on set. So season length is crucial not just for telling story but for HOW it’s told and by WHOM. The studios can’t win. Or we will have inexperienced writers stuck at junior levels not being given the chance to learn and AI coming in churning out soulless scripts.

    • @bad-people6510

She can't be dead". But I thought "This is a show about shape-shifting aliens, just because a character dies, doesn't mean we will never see their face again". And I thought Gravik would get the idea to have another Skrull take G'iah's appearance and go back to Talos to accomplish 2 things: keep Talos from finding out his daughter was killed, and feed information back to Gravik. Imagine for a second that you're tasked with making a spy thriller for Marvel. And imagine that it will star Nick Fury, so you already have a strategic genius in the script. And imagine also that the villains of this spy thriller are shape-shifting aliens, the hands-down easiest thing you can do to generate surprise twists in a spy thriller (so easy that literally every MI movie has relied on their impossible perfect face masks like a crutch). And now also ALSO imagine that this show will be named after an already well-received comic run that's basically done all the heavy lifting for you about twice, maybe even 3x over if you count the first Ultimates run. And NOW...imagine you fail to use ANY OF THAT effectively. That's Secret Invasion.

A film or TV show actually pays the same amount of residuals out whether you have 1 actor or 10 in a scene. With actors there is a residual amount (think of a pie) that is split between all of them, the more they are in the film or TV the more they get. Day or weekly rates are different that is actual pay and that could be why you would use less actors.
