  • In this episode of Signature Shots, ESPN analyst Kirk Goldsberry explains why Giannis Antetokounmpo's unassisted dunks are different than Shaquille O'Neal's (1:11), how Giannis dominates without a 3-point shot (1:45), why Giannis is the most self-sufficient dunker in decades (2:13), what's unique about Giannis' dribbling and driving ability (3:21) and how these dunks create 3-point chances for his Milwaukee Bucks teammates (5:16).

      @@attainingknowledgeoftruth8348 kawhi, 1v1, lost. Giannis shot 6 for 7. Kawhi funneling Giannis into siakim, Gasol, and ibaka, is when Giannis struggled. The wall stopped him, well, more than that. When Giannis passed put of thr wall his teammates missed their shots. Which just made the wall more effective.
      Kawhi alone didnt stop Giannis or shut him down. He just did a better job directing Giannis into the help. Something his teammates proved they couldn't do in games 1 and 2.

      @@@NintyPrime ,
      Siakim guarded Giannis the first 2 games and was not able to funnel Giannis to the big men. Giannis dominated Siakim and the Bucks won easily. Then Kawhi switched on Giannis and totally shut him down and the Raptors won 4 straight. Kawhi understood Giannis is a one dimensional player. He drives to the paint and changes direction with a spin move then dunks or passes out for a 3. All Kawhi did was cut off Giannis's spin move which forced him into the Bucks big men.

    • @NintyPrime

      @@attainingknowledgeoftruth8348 "totally shut him down"
      By Giannis dropping 22 a game on him while shooting 55%. If that's totally shutting someone down, then we have different definitions of what shut down means.
      Siakim couldn't cover Giannis at all. This is true. But Kawhi didn't "shut him down". If they dont build a wall, Giannis is dropping 30. Giannis beat Kawhi 1v1 multiple times. Its Kawhi forcing him into the wall that slowed him down.
      Even then he passed put of it and guys missed shots. Go watch the tape and how many wide open shots on those walls guys missed. Kawhi gets stopped, passed to Lowry, siakim, or vanvleet and they simply hit their shots.
      That was the difference. Games 1 and 2 Giannis did dominate siakim, but bucks players hit shots too. Lopez. Brogdon. Middleton. Hill. Guys hit shots. They stopped hitting them the rest of the series.
      People focus too much on one guy and ignore the fact it takes a team to win.

      People put all the blame on Giannis (understandable since that's the burden of being a superstar) but his teamates could not buy a shot from 3 at some point during the series against the Raptors

    • @NintyPrime
      @NintyPrime 4 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      If he develops a better shot it's easy to say it's over. But what really hurt the bucks against Toronto wasn't Giannis and the wall. It was that the wall worked, because his teammates shot so poorly from 3 the last 4 games that Giannis lead the team in 3 point makes and 3 point shooting percentage. If his teammates even do a fraction of what they did all year, the wall fails and toronto loses. If vanvleet doesnt go crazy the last 4 games, the bucks also still win. That's just how good the Bucks still were defensively and how Great Giannis still was despite the wall on offense. It took a bunch of factors for the Raptors to take out the bucks.
      The hope is this year in the playoffs the shots fall. No matter who shoots them. Add in a bit of a different team and bench unit and you could see different results regardless of what Giannis does from 3. Plus Kawhi is gone making his path easier.
      Bottom line is, Giannis is unstoppable so long as his teammates shoot alright. They shot like garbage, so it was Giannis or bust and nobody wins a title on their own.

    • @samlee6152
      @samlee6152 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      You guys all make a good point, I was so frustrated how Giannis pretty much wasn’t able to depend on his teammates anymore to make 3s throughout the playoffs and had to drive even more. That made it easier for the Raptors to just double him up all the time and shut him down cuz they knew his teammates couldn’t make 3s consistently

    There’s a reason why @ESPN is probably the best place for stats. The script for this video was legit homework! Several people compiled A LOT of data to get this information out. Then had to get it to a host so he could read it AND know where all the vocal inflections fit. Nicely done nerds! I say that with ❤️!

    Giannis is a freak of nature, he's a man amongst kids. I definitely didn't expect he would be this good when I first saw him, he had a massive genetic potential and he worked even harder to be this dominant force. Your potential means nothing if you don't work hard to achieve it.

      I hope they do awards this year. But I doubt that he will get DPOY no matter how much he deserves it. Nominated for sure, but too many voters don't like voting the same person for MVP and DPOY and prefer to vote for a pure defensive player like Gobert.
