Checkout Giles Binyon, he's been using one for years. It forms part of his essential kit for keeping warm overnight as he only uses old school gear, so is limited to what he wants to carry. He does major mileage too. Good video
👍 .. Giles is definitely a good watch. Real 'old school' and he does not compromise on that. Love his Channel .. although as he said to me, he is taking a break for now.
Hi Jesse! I saw this kind of fire pit many months ago at swedwoods because I followed him for several years now. I was so astonished because I have not seen such athing before whether in the kitchen nor in the woods 😅. Someday I asked him in the comments what this thing is and he told me that it is a veggie steamer. So I bought one too because it looked so amazing but I have to say that I sadly had not the time for using it and so this will get a project for the future for sure. Thanks 🙏for showing and for giving me an impulse to try it. As always all the best from Austria my friend 🇦🇹🤠👍🏕🔥
Hey Bernd! That is excellent! Glad to hear you picked one up. I am really enjoying it. I will say be mindful after use, as the metal softens from the heat. The center pin (if not removed) holds a lot of heat and will be hot much longer than rest of steamer. I found that out the hard way 😂 Have a good one my friend. 🤝
I use a vegetable colander with a round baking pan to go under it and a small grill for cooking on it. It's not very compact at all but I just tie it all onto the outside of my pack. It all weighs almost nothing. It can be a bit clangy. I especially like it for the firepit aspect like you said but also in snow. That is where the baking pan and colander firepit excels. I've made a level spot in a snow bank and built my fire in this setup high and dry. Just throw the small grill on for cooking. I always have the urge to grab one of these strainers when I see them. Thanks for sharing man.
Great job ! I watch both Endurance room and Swedwoods channel , you guys are awesome. I saw one of these in my local hardware store after seeing Sweddy using it , looks great for an actual camp fire. Stick stoves are a ok if you like feeding it , but these are cool for a different approach
Been using this for years. It is the best thing that I've found out there. It comes in really useful if using the bedroll, or squirrel cooker from the pathfinder store.
I first learned that from my Mom, who was born in 1930. She was showing my brothers and me safer ways to use a fire in a drought. Easier to carry than a coffee can, which was another way we did it when we were fishing. Watching Giles Binyon and Swedwood take me back to fun times. One time, we toasted marshmallows over a little fire in a gallon jar lid that was bent and wouldn't make a seal on a jar just to see if we could. Nice to see someone else using Swedwood's fire pit. Till I saw his video years ago, I thought I was the only one that used it.
I follow Swedwoods channel and he's pretty awesome. I've had one of those strainers and used it here and there. It's pretty versatile and I got mine at a yard sale for about $3.
That is excellent. The closing issue is likely warping and softening of the metal. I noticed this as I was cleaning it as it was still warm. It is probably best to let it cool completely before moving it around.
I see y’all are getting some of that liquid sunshine that’s been hammering us . The chickens are getting webbed feet here . Good stuff Jess . High and deep . Have a great evening brother
👍👍👍 .. nice 😊. Good Evening Jess .. Yep, Swedwoods has an awesome channel .. he knows his stuff. Rain .. it may seem a nuisance at the time, but mostly, in the long run, it's good. I looked at those Folding Strainers some years back at my local IKEA Store. At the time I was just browsing, so let it go. Now .. considering the protection it gives to the ground underneath .. and for the fire from heat loss to down under .. not a bad idea. Always good watching your posts, my friend .. thanks. Until next time then .. take care, Tommy
Hey Tommy! Thank you. You know, I saw these years ago too and passed on it as well. I really wish I hadn’t, as this thing is pretty amazing for such a small simple tool. The metal gets soft from the heat, so just have to be mindful until it cools down, but other than that, it’s holding up quite well. Definitely worth taking a look at. Absolutely prefer it to my Bushbox and Solo stove. Have a good one! 🤝
I too got this idea from Swedwoods - use mine quite regularly, great idea for very little money... Always love watching your channel, keep up the good work 👍
I actually have one of those in my kitchen that I use all the time... Just made broccoli with it tonight 😂 Thanks for the outside-the-box tip brother. There's nothing quite like a walk in the forest during a steady rain, is there?! I pray all is well at the home front ☺️ Have a beautiful blessed day Jess 🙏🏼
Thank you, Susan! It really does make a wonderful little fire. We are doing well here. Just keeping busy with the seasonal stuff. Hope things are going good your way! Have a good one!
Wow! I'da never thought of that Brother! Thanks for sharing this Idea and I'm going to head over to his Channel and give it a look see. What's wild is I have one in the cabinet that I rarely use, until now. ( I sure miss Russian Cold Camo) Thanks to you fielding their products I've accumulated quite a bit while I was able. 👍👍👍👍
Nice👍 I like this ideal. That looks to be a great ideal. I carry safety pins on my EDC everday, another good reason to carry them now🤗. I wonder how long this type stove would last with being so thin and possibly warping or melting a little?.
mine holds up pretty well for over 10 years now. I had to replace the little legs it came with after the third use, but that was easy, a bunch of srews did the job.
I'm going to give that a try. The woods I hang out in don't allow fires until mid October but, after that, in the coastal pacific n.w. humid/cold/stormy mountain forests, that could be put to good use. Thanks.
Thanks! I think with just general use, it should be good. The one thing I have noticed is as the metal is hot, it is softens, so being mindful of this while packing it away after use is a good idea.
Swedwoods is a true boss!

Swedewoods is the man. Its a great little fire bowl/platform. Like you he makes incredible food in the woods as well.
Nate
Thanks Nate!
I've seen Sweden Woods use this myself and it looks pretty cool . I really enjoy his channel, excellent Bushcraft and Relaxing.
I never thought I would see this again, it was popular among European bushcrafters a decade ago, alongside the IKEA hobo.
Oh man, I am exceptionally late on this one 😂 It’s definitely a great option. I was kicking myself for not getting one sooner after the first fire.
@@EnduranceRoom I can't blame you, 10 years ago you weren't in the youtube bushcraft game, yet ;-)

I’ve used one for years. It is a great stove to burn wood pellets in an urban area. After continued use, it gets where it doesn’t fold as easily.

Oh yeah, hammering for sure. Liquid sunshine lol Thanks John. Have a good one 🤝
I use mine for steaming veggies. 🥗 I never would have thought to use it for wood burning! Very interesting!
Redbranch, Swedwoods, and Endurance Room are the only outdoor channels that I regularly watch. I haven’t tried this strainer method yet.
🤝
Thats so sick! Side note, your jacket is awesome, always staying drippy my man!
Thanks Brother! Summer gorka with old German Leto camo

Hey Jess, that worked great! I have seen some of Swedwoods videos on the M-40 mess /cook kit. I'll have to revisit his channel. Thanks. 👍🏻👍🏻
Agreed on Swedwoods, well done Jess
Glad to see you are thriving.
Thanks Manfred! Cheers 🤝
I checked, mine fits into my camp cooking pot.
Easiest platform fire ever.

Good tutorial. Thank you Jess
