Around 1980 I was in an orchestra at St Johns Smith Square accompanying him in some concerto. I vividly remember listening to him "warm up" before the concert and was absolutely gob-smacked at the amount of "schzitt" (Perlman's term) in the sound he made close up when playing for a concert: grinding, crunching, scraping, grating, squeaking and scratching, etc it was quite extraordinary... it didn't carry much in a concert hall (and he toned it down for recordings) but you can get a sense of it from this live and recorded concert performance . He really goes for it.....
