I am coming back to this recording because it captivates me. Simeonova really has something 'to tell you' in her playing, I often miss this essential urgency in even the greatest performers, yet what other reason could there possibly be for making music?
Paganini played enourmosly expressionistic sometimes. He himself, described how he played Scene amoreuse on a violin with 2 strings (Adonis was the dark, and Venus was the light string) From his own words: "I began with a species of dialogue, in which I attempted to introduce movements analogous to transient bickerings and reconciliations between the lovers ... Now my strings growled, and then sighed; and anon they lisped, hesitated, joked and joyed, till at last they sported with merry jubilee It´s very difficult to think about a violinist who can do something like this om a acoustic violine. Especielly in modern classic music, no one should or want to growl with the strings. Nowadays you have to play in a well behaved and a strict restrayned maner. Maybe a singer can be allowed to do a little more. The recording of The witches is surely not done of an amateure. It´s a very good player. But maybe he play over his pay grade, when he tries to imitate Paganini (In style of Paganini is written on the cylinder) If Paganini had intention to play like this in The witches, I should want to call the style expresionism (maybe like Francis Bacons portrait of the pope Innocent X) For me this is evidently Sivori, at least in The witches dance. Read The Strad and Krastins blog before you think of something else. (The high quality is maybe because it was dtored safely in a box.) I found an article in Spectre from 1851, reading Sivori was the only violinist who could imitate Paganinis Witches dance. I have never heard a more expressionistisk classical player in my life than this Sivori, in The witches dance. When modern violinists try something similarly different, they allways loses the volyme in sound. But this violinists sonority grow when he do the tremolando in The Old womans song ( in The witches) PS. I also love Sarasates playing, like the person who wrote before. But he does his own thing. The only other classical instrumentalist I´ve heard, who could do something totally different from everyone else, is the pianist Ervin Nyiregházy. But I hope that Paganini not played like him (Liszt was totaly bewitched and intimidated of Paganinis playing, and Nyiregyházy loved to work with Liszts music. But I dont feeling well, when I listen to Nyiregyházy. But it´s haunting me, and I cant quit ...)
Amazing.....incredibly rare recording I would imagine. Beautiful playing by Erich Rohn. The sonata was written for Alma Moodie, and she frequently appeared in concert with Eduard Erdmann. No recordings of her playing exist (unless by some miracle you have one in your archive???) which is a real tragedy as she was considered an extraordinary talent. Thanks so much for posting this.
Thank you! I did not know that a historic recording of this fascinating work does exist.
epic...
Sensational innovation and virtuosity.......BRAVO from Acapulco!
Marvelous
Un son émouvant
My favorite movement.i think the best, and Carl flesh candenza.

This is great! Entremont played this piece a lot when he was younger, before he decided he needed to play a bunch of Mozart concertos to be taken seriously. As I expected, this is superlative. My only gripe is that I don't think he and the conductor seemed to agree on the tempo for the last movement. Entremont seems to want to go faster than his colleague. Too bad he never recorded it commercially. Thanks!
Just noises
Paganini La Streghe=Sivori!
Absolutely electrifying.
Stunning! I like everything about it: tempo, interpretation, soaring, singing sound, superb balance and a remarkably good live recording. Thanks.
I like this. Hungarian school with a lot of personality. Also traits of the famous Paris tradition (Vieuxtemps).
Best performance of this piece
Such a rarity and priviledge to find and listen to this recording! Thanks!
gorgeous…. One of the best … ❤
What wonderful, propulsive drive, crisp articulation: sweetness, whimsy, and fire. Lovely! Thank you for posting this!!
When I was a teenager,I had a lesson with Grinke. He had a place in Suffolk. He told me to warm-up by putting my hands in warm water, like Kreisler used to. I t did not make me sound like Kreisler.Grinke was a splendid fellow and a fine player. Thanks for this rare recording.
Bella música 🎉🎉🎉🎉
wonderful! This work by Reger is delightful and I am touched by her playing. Her slow and rich vibrato and her use of portamento makes the slow movements sound really important and majestic, reminding me of the way some of Hubay's students played.
Bravo
❤
I am just re-reading Tully Potter's Adolf Busch biography. Having to compete with violinists of such high violinistic and artistic level as Mischakoff, not even to mention the ones of real star status, I don't find it surprising, that Busch's solo career didn't continue in America. Mischakoff plays his Beethoven wonderfully in classic style with perfect intonation and expression. Absolutely world class!
Memory lapse in cadenza
I have the impression, that it could still be fixed, because he re-starts again from before it happened. Unfortunately, the recording as a whole has some pitch problems since the tape seems to have stretched.
He tried to jam in the style of Kreisler. His Heldenleben solo with Toscanini is worth a listen.
Is this sheet music available online?
Thank you for publishing. Does the conductor sing from time to time, or who is it?
Never heard this recording before. Thanks for unearthing it.
Just a delight to hear. Exquisite in every way. Intonation, lovely trills, so clean, and singing tone in the slow sections. Plus I read he owned 4 Strads. Lucky guy. thanks for posting.
Wonderful playing devoid of all unecessary antics. Beautiful intonation! Eric Shumsky
Thank you, Hector. Can you provide more information on this radio broadcast, date, etc? Is it from a tape or LP?
Hi Jim. I don’t have anything else unfortunately.
Wow. The first two notes completely impressed me. What a grat piece!! 🎉😮❤
Great

Lo vi tocar cuando yo era niña. !Maravilloso!
The passages sound choppy. Ray chen those them better.
Thank you so much for posting Hector!!! Wonderful playing! It is such a shame I didn´t know her recordings!
Same here...
she had been a violin professor at the Düsseldorf Robert Schumann Musikhochschule until 2017 and she must be by now 95 years old if she is still alive. Really terrific and interesting playing!
Thank you so much for bringing us this wonderful artist who has the golden age magic in her blood! Eric Shumsky
